-
- Cheaper than DAT? I don't think so. First of all CD-ROM writers can only
- store 600 MB on a disk, and the disks can only be used once. DAT can store
- over 2000 MB more with compression or a better DAT-streamer. You can also
- reuse these tapes of course. I don't know exactly what a media costs for a
- CD-ROM writer but I reckon it is around $10 (I pay $15 to create a CD-ROM by a
- friend). DAT tapes cost about the same, but can be reused and have 3 times as
- much space.
-
- Also, DAT streamers are cheaper than CD-ROM writers, and they last longer.
- CD-ROM writers have a limited life-span, (the cheap ones can write about 1500
- CD's before they die).
-
- DAT-streamers are quite fast as well, although not as fast as the more
- expensive CD-ROM writers. You can get DAT streamers ranging from 180 K/s to
- about 550 K/s.
-
- Of course, the downside is that you can't use a DAT tape as-if it was a
- harddisk, but then again, I don't intend to have my CD-ROM drive 'constantly'
- filled with one specific CD-ROM because some essential stuff is on it.
- However, if you want to just restore a few files from DAT, it takes about 30-60
- seconds to locate the file(s), I don't expect anymore from a backup-device :-)
-
- But now for something completely different... I have been thinking if it would
- be possible to use a combination of a MPEG en/decoder card which can grab video
- output in realtime + a DAT streamer to create a Digital Video system, to
- replace the shitty VHS quality we have to put up with now.
-
- It would allow real-time playback and recording (DAT streamers are fast
- enough). DAT tapes are cheap enough for this kind of thing too, and I think
- they could easily hold 3 hours of MPEG data (2000 MB), compare this with 1
- CD-ROM which can hold about 1 hour of MPEG data (600 MB).
-
- Now all I need is a card which can do realtime MPEG encoding with a video
- source as input and this might just work. Problem is does such a card exist?
