- I presume that you guys at AT have done the heavy lifting on this
- already, so I was wondering about the following points. Naturally, you
- don't have to answer these if you don't wish to or can't, but I think
- this shows that even AT detractors like myself have the best wishes of
- the Amiga in mind and want AT to be successful in attempting what's
- considered the impossible, resurrecting a "dead" platform:
-
- 1) How much would making the 1200+/1300/whatever it's called today in a
- pizza box style instead of an all-in-one actually add to the price of
- the machine? This is in a full manufacturing run, not in the size of the
- run that's already been done. Retooling costs should, of course, be
- included in this, and if you do answer this, no need to give exact
- figures. A percentage would be sufficient.
-
- 2) Is there a price that AT considers a maximum limit for a low-end
- system before the price becomes a drag on sales? If so (and I'm
- certain it is), what's the profit difference between a pizza box system
- sold at that price and a 1200 at the price it's being sold at now? If
- it's a substantial difference, I accept your argument that it shouldn't
- be done. The economic health of AT is the primary concern of all of us
- right now, devil's advocates included. Again, if you do decide to
- answer this, percentages would be fine.
-
- 3) Would a pizza-box 1200+/1300/whatever generate extra sales by having a
- more "professional" look? If so, can that sales boost be substantial
- enough to make up for any "lost" profits engendered by not having an
- all-in-one?
-
- 4) If AT decides to get into the peripherals game, could some of those
- profit losses be made up by having the 1200+/1330/whatever in a
- more-easily-expandable format like a pizza box to generate peripheral
- sales?
-
- 5) And, of course, what about Scarecrow's Brain, the PPC Amiga? Will
- the all-in-one be kept for the low-end system? If so, has AT
- considered a medium-end system in a pizza box? Of course, any answer
- to this would just be speculation at this time, but a great many people
- on here would like AT to keep this question and possibilities in mind.
-
- The pizza box point was brought up as speculation. Since so much
- depends on image, many of us feel that the Amiga's image can only be
- enhanced by getting away from the all-in-one. Personally, I don't even
- like pizza boxes, but I like the all-in-one even less. Viability
- depends on expanding the user base, and we all want what's best for the
- Amiga. It's just a speculative debate. We don't have the hard figures
- in front of us.
-
- AT, especially yourself, has been very accomodating to user statements.
- But you've got to think that after the experiences of C=, we might not
- just accept "This is our ball and you're going to play the game we want
- to" as a reason. There's going to be dissention and second-guessing on
- every point. It's just relatively rare for someone to be
- second-guessed before actions are performed. However, it can be a
- benefit when looked at in the right way.
-
- And as for me "waking up", to quote that great philosopher Bono,
- Dr. Kittel, "I'm wide awake. I'm not sleeping." I think I just
- demonstrated that.
-
- DK> > Color machines (other than beige) are a great selling point
- DK> > right now. Ask Acer.
-
- DK> There were already many attempts for colored computer cases in the
- DK> last 10 years. Commdore was among them with a special series of
- DK> pop design A500's. They did not shatter the world. Neither did the
- DK> T-Bird from Aquarius or some PCs from Peacock with wood design and
- DK> other funny attempts. Oh, and don't forget: CDTV was black, CD32
- DK> grey, and it didn't bosst sales either.
-
- Sigh (if I may steal that from you). To use that old cliche, "That was
- then; this is now". The people who agree with the "color computer"
- statement feel that after years of beige, color helps a computer stand
- out on the shelves. It's just a packaging point. Obviously, there
- have been failed attempts to do this before, but the market seems right
- for a colored box right now. It might be worth the attempt again.
-
- DK> My news and email feed was down for nearly 2 weeks, sorry.
-
- That's all right; it happens to all of us.
