- I recently had a 'discussion' with a friend who has some connection with
- Sony. He said that Sony and many other companies have a philosophy or
- even a policy that they WILL NOT license technology from others. They
- prefer to pay BIG bux to engineer types to develop the same or simular
- technology. (We were talking about the advantages to Sony of grabbing
- the Surfer package for NA marketing).
-
- I said that the window of opportunity for a 'net surfer package is very
- small. (in a year or two new tech will make the web as accessible as the
- telephone or the whole concept will be as dead as an Atari 2600). He
- said it doesn't matter since Sony can't/won't bend their anti-license
- rules. I said that it sounded like a welfare system for over-priced
- engineers.... ;)
-
- As is common with this sort of discussion, it was a draw. One thing tho,
- I'm not going to run out and buy Sony stock.... (as if I could!!)
-
- I believe this was called "Not invented here" syndrome at IBM and had a
- bit to do with their lack of competitiveness.
