Welcome to Icon Heaven
the Frobozz icon manager
Version 1.13
ABOUT ICON HEAVEN
Icon Heaven is a Workplace Shell enhancement that simplifies
the task of keeping icon libraries on your disk and assigning icons to
objects.
INSTALLATION
Simply unzip this file (FIH.ZIP) into an empty directory and double click
on the install.cmd object, or, in an OS/2 command session, type
install+<ENTER>.
The installation procedure will ask you for a directory where
Icon Heaven should be installed. After selecting a directory,
the installation procedure will copy all the necessary files to
that directory and create a number of Workplace Shell objects.
After the installation terminates, Icon Heaven will be available
in a folder on the desktop. You can move this folder from
the desktop to any other folder if you wish.
The installation procedure can clean up after itself when terminating.
So the directory used to run the installation from will be empty. You
only have to save the Zip file if you want to do a re-install later.
DE-INSTALLATION
If, perchance, you really don't like Icon Heaven, you can easily remove it
from your system. The installation procedure will install a de-install
object in the Icon Heaven folder. Simply double-click on it and answer
the obligatory queries on whether you are absolutely sure you know what
you are doing and Icon Heaven will be removed. During de-install, you can
ignore the dialog box that asks you to confirm closing the de-install
session, it will close by itself anyway.
In most cases, de-install will not be able to remove the file fim.dll
from the Icon Heaven directory. You can delete this file manually later on
after a reboot when the shell unlocks it.
RE-INSTALLATION
A re-installation procedure called reinst.cmd is also provided. If you
happen to delete the Icon Heaven folder from your system, this program
will recreate it for you, including all the icon folders. Just open an
OS/2 Command Prompt window and run REINST from the directory where
Icon Heaven is installed.
THE APPLICATION
Icon Heaven uses a special type of folder, called an Icon Folder,
to store icons. These icons are not physically stored on disk where
they would take up far too much diskspace for the occasional time
you need them. Instead Icon Heaven stores icons in special
compressed libraries and only expands those when they are
accessed. This reduces the storage cost of an icon to a mere
7% of the space needed when using normal icons (on a FAT disk, savings are
less on HPFS).
LIBRARIES INCLUDED
This package includes a set of five icon libraries. They are:
- Wordprocessing icons
- Datacomm icons
- Games icons
- Compiler icons
- Utility icons
OTHER LIBRARIES
A separate set of libraries is available for download from the OS2BVEN forum
on CompuServe. This is a big set containing some 2300 converted
Windows icons. There is no need to download these if you already
have those as they've been roaming the nets for quite some time now.
Please see intructions below for creating your own libraries. The file
is called FIHLIB.ZIP.
There is also a set of great icons created by Fred Ng <fredng@io.org>
of Team OS/2 Canada.
You can locate that set at:
ftp://hobbes.nmsu.edu/multimedia/icons/ticn10ih.zip
These are over 3700 high-res icons and they look a lot better than the
ones in fihlib.zip. The set is in Icon Heaven format and an install program
is provided to install the libraries as part of Icon Heaven.
Another set of icons you can get are the ones created by the folks at
Stardock systems. I've uploaded that set to hobbes and it should be
available at
ftp://hobbes.nmsu.edu/multimedia/icons/sdsfim.zip
This set contains very well done 3D replacements for folders and other
often used WpS objects. When you see those icons you wonder where they
fond the time to build great OS/2 apps like Object Desktop and Galactic
Civilizations.
LATEST RELEASE
I have been working on setting up my own web page containing the latest
release of Icon Heaven plus pointers to other stuff I think is useful.
You can access my web page at
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/pvk/frobozz.htm
ASSIGNING ICONS
Icon Heaven also simplifies assigning icons to objects. Instead of having
to open the settings for an object and dragging the appropriate icon to
the General page, icons are assigned by dragging the object to the icon.
A simple one step operation.
Just to avoid an easily made mistake:
In Icon Heaven you drop the OBJECT on the ICON
and not the other way round.
Warp users only:
The animated icon for a folder can also be assigned directly by pressing
and holding down the control key during the drag operation. Dropping on
an icon with this method will change the second ('open') icon for the folder.
RESTRICTIONS
In the unregistered version, you are only allowed to assign 10 icons between
each reboot of your system. This should be enough to evaluate the
product. If you want unlimited usage, you will have to register.
MANAGING ICON LIBRARIES
Icon Heaven does not restrict you to using the icon libraries provided
with the software. You can easily expand the libraries provided or
create your own. This is done using normal Workplace actions, by
dragging a new Icon Folder from the Icon Folder template (the object
looking like a sticky pad with an icon folder icon within it) in the
Icon Heaven folder or by selecting 'Create another' from
the popup menu of an existing Icon Folder. Then you can 'connect'
the folder to a library by opening the settings and
specifying the name of a new iconlibrary (for instance:
'C:\IHeaven\MyIcons.FIM').
Now that you've created the library, you can open it and add icons to it.
Adding icons to a library is simply a process of dragging Workplace objects
to the folder (they don't have to be icon files). This will populate the
folder and the library.
Warp users only:
If you want to add the animated icon of a folder object to a library,
drag the object to the icon folder with the control key pressed. (note:
only folders currently have animated icons)
THE ICONLIB TOOL
Also included is a library manager called iconlib.exe. It allows you
to list the contents of an icon library, pretty up the names of the icons,
add new icons (icon files only) and set the folder name. This tool is useful
when you have big directories full of icons and you want to convert them
into Icon Heaven libraries, just type:
iconlib c:\IHeaven\cool.FIM c:\icons\cool\*.ico
and all the icons in the cool directory will be added to a Icon Heaven
library named cool.FIM.
The iconlib tool also has a few other features. For an online help of
the switches supported, just run iconlib without any parameters.
OBJECT DESKTOP USERS
Icon Heaven uses folders to show the icons when they are accessed. This
method can cause some problems when used on a system with Object Desktop.
If OD's folder browse mode is enabled for Icon Heaven folders, the folders
will not correctly populate with icons when opened. This is because OD takes
over that part of the system. Browse mode has some other problems as well;
new objects are never created in the active folder but in the highest parent
folder in the browse hierarchy. A minor point, but still a bit annoying.
To circumvent problems with Icon Heaven and Object Desktop, just disable
browse mode in the Icon Heaven folder, everything will work fine then.
DESKMAN/2 USERS
Some users of Icon Heaven are experiencing problems when they want to install
DeskMan/2 on a system that has Icon Heaven already installed. When you
you run into this perform the following steps to remove and reinstall Icon
Heaven.
1. make a new directory and unzip the Icon Heaven zipfile into it
2. copy all existing libraries (*.FIM) to that directory
3. de-install Icon Heaven using the icon in the Icon Heaven folder
4. Install DeskMan/2
5. go to the directory with the fresh Icon Heaven and run install again
REGISTERING
Icon Heaven is shareware. You are granted a 30 day trial period to see if
you like the software. Feel free to pass it on to friends, neighbours and
colleages...
If you like Icon Heaven, please register it, support the shareware concept.
Icon Heaven costs only $15. This is for a single OS/2 system lifetime licence
including any and all future updates to the product.
You can register Icon Heaven by sending your name and creditcard number plus
expiration date to:
CompuServe 75170,1045
Internet pvk@acm.org
fidonet 2:285/324.10
os2net 81:431/41.10

The Netherlands
fax +31-70-5111789
BBS The Lighthouse BBS
+31-183-402427
userid: Paul Van Keep
The actual amount debited from your credit card will be slightly lower
than $15, because of fluctuations in international currency rates. Payment
will be done in dutch guilders, FL 25,- (about $14.75 at the time I write
this)
Private users (not companies) in the European Union but outside
Holland will be charged HFL 30,-, which includes 17.5% Dutch VAT.
Companies don't have to pay VAT. I don't know why they want to make
this so hard, but those are the European rules, so I guess the best
thing is to just stick to them.
Users (both private & companies) in the Netherlands can also register
by transferring HFL 30,- to bank account 45.17.71.214,
tnv Van Keep Software BV. This price includes Dutch VAT. Please mention
a postal or email address.
On CompuServe you can also register through the Shareware Registration
Database. To access the database, use GO SWREG and select 'Register
Shareware'. The registration ID for Icon Heaven is: 2983. The price
for registering Icon Heaven through CompuServe is $20, due to the
high fee CIS claims for handling registrations and the fee my bank wants
for processing a cheque from CIS.
On line registration is also possible through Pete Norloff's OS/2 Shareware
BBS (703-385-4325). Registration there will provide users with an instant
registration key, no need to wait for a reply from me. As with CompuServe,
the price there is $20. You can access Pete's BBS directly over the internet
using telnet at telnet://bbs.os2bbs.com. Also see http://www.os2bbs.com/
for more information on his BBS.
Finally, registration is now also available through BMT Micro also for
$20. See the order form included in the file BMTORDER.FRM or go to their
website at: http://www.wilmington.net/bmtmicro.
Registering will get rid of (some of) the troubles with your conscience as
well as the annoying popup of the about dialog the first time you open
an Icon Folder after a reboot. Moreover if you don't register you'll have
to reboot your system if you want to assign more than 10 icons..
REGISTER SAFELY WITH PGP
Better be safe than sorry when sending credit card information over the
internet. So I'd advise everyone to use PGP to encrypt their registration
message to me. You can use my public key to do this. If you don't have PGP
yet, dowload it from the hobbes site or ftp-os2.cdrom.com (pgp26ui-os2.zip)

BENIFITS FOR REGISTERED USERS
As well as not having a built in limitation to the number of icons
assigend, there is some added functionality to the registered version.
In the popup menu of each icon a new item will be available: 'Extract'
This will allow you to extract the icon into a plain icon file.
Also you can double click on an icon to invoke the Icon Editor and
change it.
SUPPORT

PLANNED ENHANCEMENTS
The next major release of Icon Heaven will support renaming of icons (You can
rename them now, but the changes won't be saved). I'm also working on a
change where folder icons can be assigned as a set to an object instead of
having to use two steps.
Any other suggestions for enhancing Icon Heaven are greatly appreciated.
Please send any mail to one of the adresses above.

function. No more problems with blank or
wrong resolution icons. Dragging of icons
has been disabled.
06-03-95 ver 1.10 Major overhaul
Fixed problems with 1.05 trapping sometimes
Icons can now be extracted from libraries
using the popup menu and edited with the
Icon Editor. Bug fixed where one in two
icons would show up blank. Apparently caused
by using WinCreatePointerIndirect in a WPS
user thread. Solved trap when rebooting
with an open icon folder. Added support
for animated folder icons
21-02-96 ver 1.11 Folder is forced into icon view even when
user has another view selected as default
(ksnider@amaranth.com).
Settings now popup when icon folder is
created from template.
Icons are now deleted from a folder when
closed. This avoids uncontrolled swapper
growth with large icon collections
Entryfield for library names was limited to
30 positions, has been increased to 256
A 'bug' in Lan requester causes the folder
object to lose its template. This also affects
icons folders. Templating is now forced.
27-03-96 ver 1.12 fixed install problem with 1.11.
Added 'Create antoher' back in. It got
lost along the way.
Implemented a work around for icons not
showing up after the first folder was
opened. Bug possibly related to Object Desktop.
04-06-96 ver 1.13 Fixed bug that template wouldn't be created
(finally). Also changed behaviour that the
last icon folder that was accessed before a
reboot would open up again after restarting
when RESTARTOBJECTS=FOLDERS is specified in
config.sys. Deleting an icon folder does not
empty the underlying library anymore.
