  4. The following document details the virus definitions update 
  5. procedures for:
  6.  
  7. * Norton AntiVirus 1.0 and 2.0 for Windows 95  
  8. * Norton AntiVirus 3.0   
  9. * Norton AntiVirus Network Manager
  10. * Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Windows NT and NT Tools
  11. * Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for NetWare

  16. TIP1: Be aware that if you are receiving this update on disk, the
  17. Intelligent Updater program file is located on disk one.  All other
  18. update files are located on disk two.
  19.  
  20. TIP2: Be sure to read the WHATSNEW.TXT for important information
  21. about new viruses. The new macro virus that infects Microsoft Excel
  22. files requires you to add .xl? to the Program File Extensions list.

  26. Intelligent Updater
  27. =====================================================================
  28. As part of our continuing commitment to fight the spread of computer
  29. viruses, Symantec has developed a new program called Intelligent 
  30. Updater to simplify virus definitions files updates. Intelligent 
  31. Updater locates Norton AntiVirus on your computer and installs new 
  32. virus definitions files automatically. All you have to do is run the 
  33. program then scan your disk with Norton AntiVirus. Later sections of 
  34. this document give step-by-step instructions for each Norton 
  35. AntiVirus version.
  36.  
  37. The Intelligent Updater program file is located on your virus 
  38. definitions update disk one. The program name, which changes from
  39. month to month, uses the following form:
  40.  
  41.       mmNAVyy.EXE, where mm is the month and yy is the year.
  42.  
  43. For example, 07NAV97A.EXE is the virus definitions files update for
  44. July, 1997.
  45.  
  46. =====================================================================
  47. Norton AntiVirus 1.0 and 2.0 for Windows 95
  48. =====================================================================
  49. Important Notice: If your version of Norton AntiVirus 1.0 for Windows 
  50. 95 (NAVW32.EXE) is dated before June 1, 1996, you must update it 
  51. using the NAV 95.0b patch or upgrade to version 2.0. As viruses 
  52. continue to be discovered with alarming regularity, the NAV virus 
  53. definitions files have grown in size to counter the latest threats. 
  54. Applying this patch will ensure that your installation will continue 
  55. to accept the latest (and largest) virus definitions files. Using 
  56. older versions of Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95 can cause false 
  57. detections when the new virus definitions are installed. This latest 
  58. patch also adds support for Microsoft Service Pack 2 (FAT 32/large 
  59. volumes) and will be required to apply the July 1997 virus
  60. definitions set.

  62. Users of Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Windows 95 do not require anti-
  63. virus engine updates at this time.
  64.  
  65. To upgrade your Norton AntiVirus program, copy this file to a 
  66. temporary directory and execute it to extract the necessary files. 
  67. Then click Setup to begin the installation process.
  68. The NAV 95.0b patch contains the October 1996 virus definition set. 
  69. You must apply the latest virus definitions set update (for example, 
  70. 07NAV97A.EXE) after completing the program update.
  71. NAV950B.EXE is located where the monthly virus definitions files 
  72. updates are normally found. It is available for download from the 
  73. Symantec BBS, the Symantec FTP or Web sites, CompuServe, America 
  74. Online, or Microsoft Network. You can also call Customer Service at 
  75. (800) 441-7234 to order a disk set.

  77. To update Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95 virus definitions files:
  78. ------------------------------------------------------------------

  80. 1. Go to (select) the folder or drive where you have the Intelligent 
  81.    Updater program (07NAV97A.EXE).
  82.    For example, your A: drive.
  83. 2. Double-click (launch) the file 07NAV97A.EXE.
  84. 3. Follow the instructions on screen.
  85. 4. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive. Before you reboot your
  86.    computer, you must run a scan for viruses. Scanning your drive
  87.    activates the new virus definitions and rebuilds critical files.
  88. 5. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new 
  89.    definitions.

  93. Norton AntiVirus 3.0
  94. =====================================================================
  95. Important Notice: If your version is dated before June 1, 1996
  96. (NAV.EXE, NAVW.EXE), you should update it using this Engine Update 
  97. (UPDATEME.EXE). As viruses continue to be discovered with alarming 
  98. regularity, the NAV virus definition files have grown in size to 
  99. counter the latest threats. Applying this patch will ensure that your 
  100. installation will continue to accept the latest (and largest) virus 
  101. definition files. Using older versions of Norton AntiVirus can cause 
  102. false detections when the new virus definitions are installed.
  103. This patch is required to apply virus definition sets dated
  104. July 1997 or later.
  105. To upgrade your Norton AntiVirus Network Manager program, download
  106. the file named UPDATEME.EXE. Place the file in an empty directory and 
  107. execute UPDATEME.EXE to extract its contents. Step-by-step 
  108. instructions are included in the READ.ME file.

  111. You must apply the latest virus definition set update (for example, 
  112. 07NAV97A.EXE) after completing the program update.

  124. To update Norton AntiVirus 3.0 virus definitions files from Windows:
  125. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  126. 1. Go to (select) the directory or drive where you have the
  127.    Intelligent Updater program (07NAV97A.EXE).
  128.    For example, your A: drive.
  129. 2. Double-click on the file 07NAV97A.EXE.
  130. 3. Follow the on screen instructions.
  131. 4. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive. Before you reboot your 
  132.    computer, you must run a scan for viruses. Scanning your drive 
  133.    activates the new virus definitions and rebuilds critical files.
  134. 5. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new 
  135.    definitions as well.

  137. To update Norton AntiVirus 3.0 virus definitions files from DOS:
  138. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  139. 1. Exit Windows entirely.
  140.    For example, from within Windows, select EXIT from the File menu.
  141. 2. Change to the directory or drive where you have the Intelligent 
  142.    Updater program (07NAV97A.EXE).
  143.    For example, type A: at the C:\ prompt.
  144. 3. From the DOS prompt, type 07NAV97A.EXE and press Enter.
  145. 4. Follow the instructions on screen.
  146. 5. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive. Before you reboot your 
  147.    computer, you must run a scan for viruses. Scanning your drive 
  148.    activates the new virus definitions and rebuilds critical files.
  149. 6. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new 
  150.    definitions as well.

  154. Norton AntiVirus Network Manager
  155. =====================================================================
  156. Important Notice: If your version of Norton AntiVirus Network Manager
  157. (NAVNET.EXE) is dated before June 1, 1996, you must upgrade your 
  158. software before updating the virus definitions files. Using an older 
  159. version of the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager with the new virus 
  160. definitions may generate false alarms.

  162. To upgrade your Norton AntiVirus Network Manager program (quick 
  163. instructions):
  164.  
  165. Detailed, step-by-step instructions are included in the READ.ME file.
  166.

  168. You must apply the latest virus definition set update (for example, 
  169. 07NAV97A.EXE) after completing the program update.

  171. 1. Download the file named UPDATEME.EXE to an empty directory.

  173.    updates are normally found. It is available for download from the 
  174.    Symantec BBS, the Symantec FTP or Web sites, CompuServe, America

  177. 2. Copy NAVNET.EXE and NAVNETW.EXE to your local NAV directory.
  178.    NAVNET.EXE or NAVNETW.EXE must be in the NAV directory or path or 
  179.    only the standalone files will be extracted
  180. 3. Execute UPDATEME.EXE to extract its contents.
  181.  
  182. After updating Norton AntiVirus Network Manager, you must do the   
  183. following:
  184.  
  185.  1. Delete all VIRSP*.DAT files from the Norton AntiVirus Network 
  186.  Manager directory.
  187.  
  188.  2. Recreate your .NNS files using the new _DEFAULT.NNS as a template.
  189.  For information on how to recreate .NNS files, order FaxBack #4290 
  190.  from our free FaxBack service at (541) 984-2490, option 2.

  192.  3. Update your virus definition set (detailed instructions below).
  193.  The NAV 3.10 patch contains the October 1996 virus definition set. 
  194.  You must apply the latest virus definition set update (for 
  195.  example, 07NAV97A.EXE) after completing the program update.

  198. To update Norton AntiVirus Network Manager virus definitions files:
  199. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  200. 1. On a workstation connected to the network, change to the directory
  201.    where you downloaded the Intelligent Updater program 
  202.    (07NAV97A.EXE).
  203. 2. Map a drive letter to the volume and directory where Norton
  204.    AntiVirus Network Manager is installed. 
  205. 3. You must have READ and WRITE access to the mapped drive.
  206. 4. From a DOS prompt, type 07NAV97A.EXE [path] and press Enter.
  207.    [path] is the location mapped in step 2. 
  208. 5. Follow the instructions on screen.
  209. 6. Start Norton AntiVirus from the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager
  210.    directory and scan a drive to activate the new virus definitions. 
  211.    You must run a scan for viruses. Scanning a drive activates the 
  212.    new virus definitions and rebuilds critical files.

  215. Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Windows NT and NT Tools
  216. =====================================================================
  217. Users of Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Windows NT and Norton NT Tools do
  218. not require anti-virus engine updates at this time.
  219. To update Norton AntiVirus for NT virus definitions files from
  220. Windows NT 3.5x:
  221. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  222. 1. Go to (select) the folder or drive where you have the Intelligent 
  223.    Updater program (07NAV97A.EXE).
  224.    For example, your A: drive.
  225. 2. Double-click on the file 07NAV97A.EXE.
  226. 3. Follow the on screen instructions.
  227. 4. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive. You must run a scan 
  228.    for viruses. Scanning your drive activates the new virus 
  229.    definitions and rebuilds critical files.
  230.  
  231. To update Norton AntiVirus for NT virus definitions files from 
  232. Windows NT 4.0:
  233. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  234. 1. Go to (select) the folder or drive where you have the Intelligent 
  235.    Updater program (07NAV97A.EXE).
  236.    For example, your A: drive.
  237. 2. Double-click (launch) the file 07NAV97A.EXE.
  238. 3. Follow the instructions on screen.
  239. 4. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive. You must run a scan 
  240.    for viruses. Scanning your drive activates the new virus 
  241.    definitions and rebuilds critical files.

  245. Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for NetWare
  246. =====================================================================
  247. Important Notice: If your version of Norton AntiVirus for NetWare, 
  248. version 2.0 is dated earlier than December 13, 1995, you must upgrade 
  249. your software before updating the virus definitions files. The new 
  250. version of Norton AntiVirus for NetWare detects and removes a new 
  251. class of viruses called macro viruses. These viruses infect Microsoft 
  252. Word document and template files, and Microsoft Excel files. 
  253. For information on how to receive the upgrade, call Customer Service 
  254. at (800) 441-7234.
  255.  
  256. To update Norton AntiVirus for NetWare virus definitions files:
  257. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  258. 1. On a workstation connected to the network, change to the directory
  259.    where you downloaded the Intelligent Updater program 
  260.    (07NAV97A.EXE).
  261. 2. Map a drive letter to the volume and directory where Norton 
  262.    AntiVirus for NetWare is installed. 
  263. 3. You must have WRITE access to the mapped drive.
  264. 4. Disable the Norton AntiVirus for NetWare NLM.
  265.      Choose DISABLE NLM from the Tools menu in the Norton AntiVirus 
  266.      for NetWare Windows configuration window.
  267.        or
  268.      Press F3 at the NAVNLM server console screen. 
  269. 5. From a DOS prompt, type 07NAV97A.EXE [path] and press Enter.
  270. 6. [path] is the location mapped in step 2. Follow the instructions 
  271.    on screen.
  272. 7. Enable the Norton AntiVirus for NetWare NLM. 
  273.      Choose ENABLE NLM from the Tools menu in the Norton AntiVirus 
  274.      for NetWare Windows configuration window.
  275.        or
  276.      Press F2 at the NAVNLM server console screen.

  280. Installing Virus Definitions Files Manually
  281. =====================================================================
  282. If you do not want Intelligent Updater to install the new virus 
  283. definitions for you automatically, you can use the /DUMP command to 
  284. extract the virus definitions files, then copy the appropriate files 
  285. to the Norton AntiVirus folder.
  286.  
  287. To install virus definitions files manually:
  288. --------------------------------------------------------------------
  289. 1. Copy the Intelligent Updater program (07NAV97A.EXE) to an empty,
  290.    temporary folder.
  291. 2. Launch the Intelligent Updater program using the /DUMP command:
  292.  
  293.       07NAV97A.EXE /DUMP
  294.  
  295.    Virus definitions files for all supported platforms are extracted 
  296.    into the temporary folder.
  297. 3. Copy the appropriate files to the Norton AntiVirus folder.
  298. 4. Refer to the Intelligent Updater File List below for information 
  299.    on which files to copy into the Norton AntiVirus folder.
