  1.        How to obtain updates to the DOS shareware version over the net:
  2.  
  3. Updates to F-PROT consist of three distinct files.
  4.  
  5.    fp-xxx.zip   This file is updated as necessary, maybe every one or two
  6.                 months.  It contains the DOS version of F-PROT and the
  7.                 current virus definition files.
  8.  
  9.    fp-def.zip   Contains the latest SIGN.DEF and SIGN2.DEF
  10.  
  11.    macrdef2.zip Contains the latest MACRO.DEF
  12.  
  13.                 The .DEF update files are updated more frequently than the
  14.                 program itself.  At the moment, they are only available
  15.                 directly from us (ftp.f-prot.com), and any site that
  16.                 mirrors our FTP site, but that may change soon.
  17.  
  18. If you have FTP access, you can always get the current version of F-PROT by
  19. anonymous FTP from a number of sites.  Our primary method of distribution
  20. is through Simtel and Garbo, and all "mirrors" of those sites should always
  21. carry an up-to-date version of F-PROT.

  117. For people in remote corners of the world, without reliable FTP or WWW
  118. access, we offer the "F-PROT by E-mail" service.
  119.  
  120. To use this service, you MUST be able to handle multiple-part uu-, xx-
  121. or mime-encoded mail messages.  Please do not waste your (and ours) time by
  122. using this service if you do not already have the software to decode such
  123. messages, and keep in mind that this service is intended for those who
  124. have no other alternative...that is, no FTP or WWW access.
  125.  
  126. To use this service you send an E-mail message to f-prot-update@f-prot.com.
  127. This is an automated mail server.  No human will see your message, and if
  128. it does not match the format described below, the mail server will just
  129. respond with a standard help message.
  130.  
  131. For now the following commands are accepted by the mail server. 
  132.  
  133. Please note that the commands must be in the body of the message, not in
  134. the subject line or the header.
  135.  
  136. send-file: name
  137. send-as: form
  138. send-part: part_num
  139. send-size: size_in_kilobytes
  140. send-version
  141. subscribe notice
  142. unsubscribe notice
  143. check notice
  144.  
  145. The 'send-file' command may be omitted.  In that case, the mail server
  146. will send the current version of F-PROT (the FP-xxx.ZIP file). If
  147. specified, it must have one of the following values: 'f-prot' or 'fp-def'.
  148.  
  149. The 'send-as' command signifies the encoding that should be used in sending
  150. the file by E-mail.  'form' must be one of: 'uue', 'xxe' or 'mime'.
  151.  
  152. If the 'send-as' command is 'mime', F-PROT will be sent as a MIME message
  153. with Content-Type: message/partial.
  154.  
  155. send-part: requests transmission of a specific part.  You should only use
  156. this command if you are requesting re-transmission of a corrupted part.
  157.  
  158. send-size: requests that a specific size (in KB) is used for each part.
  159. The size must be between 20 and 60.  
  160.  
  161. send-version is used to check which version is currently available.  Using
  162. "finger f-prot@f-prot.com" is a better method, however.

  166. To get an uuencoded copy of the current version of F-PROT, send a message
  167. containing the following in the body to 'f-prot-update@f-prot.com' :

  169. send-as: uue
  170.  
  171. If for some reason, the 6th part of the transmission failed, you could
  172. send another message to 'f-prot-update@f-prot.com' containing the following
  173. in the body:

  175. send-as: uue
  176. send-part: 6

  178. To change the block size to about 20 Kilobytes, you could send a message
  179. to 'f-prot-update@f-prot.com' containing the following in the body:

  184. And if the 4th part of that transmission is lost, you could send the
  185. following message to 'f-prot-update@f-prot.com':

  189. send-part: 4

  191. subscribe notice:  Allows people to subscribe to a new version notice.
  192. Subscribers will then receive announcement in E-mail when new versions of
  193. F-PROT are available.

  195. unsubscribe notice:  Removes people from the new version notice list.
  196.  
  197. check notice:  Sends back confirmation whether an address is subscribed or
  198. not.
