  17. ** Adding Program File Extensions to Detect/Repair Excel Viruses   **

  19. In order for NAV (all versions and platforms) to detect and repair the 
  20. XM.Laroux virus, you must add ".XL?" to the program files extension 
  21. list. Without this addition, NAV will ignore all Excel spreadsheets and 
  22. not report infections.

  45. ** Norton AntiVirus Program Upgrades                                **

  47. If your version of Norton AntiVirus (NAV.EXE, NAVW.EXE or NAVW32.EXE) 
  48. is dated before June 1, 1996, you should update it with the latest 
  49. program updates available. As viruses continue to be discovered with 
  50. alarming regularity, the NAV virus definitions files have grown in 
  51. size to counter the latest threats. Applying the patches will ensure 
  52. that your installation will continue to accept the latest (and 
  53. largest) virus definitions files. Using older versions of Norton 
  54. AntiVirus can cause false detections when the new virus definitions 
  55. are installed.

  58. Norton AntiVirus 3.10 Engine Update (UPDATEME.EXE) 
  59. --------------------------------------------------
  60. To upgrade your Norton AntiVirus 3.0 program:
  61.  
  62.   * Download the file called UPDATEME.EXE
  63.   * Place the file in an empty directory and execute the file
  64.     to extract its components.
  65.   * Enter:  PATH;  at the DOS prompt.
  66.     DonÆt forget the semicolon. This command temporarily disables 
  67.     your path statement and will prevent corruption of NAV Network 
  68.     Manager installations.
  69.   * Run UPDATE.EXE to create a set of install files.
  70.     To place these files on floppies and create a new installation 
  71.     disk set, enter A:\ when it prompts for a location to EXTRACT the
  72.     files to.
  73.   * From DOS, run INSTALL.EXE.

  75.   * After applying this patch, you must also update your virus 
  76.     definition set.

  79. NAV for Windows 95 v1.0, 95.0b Large Volume Update (NAV95OB.EXE)

  81. This latest patch also adds support for Microsoft Service Pack 2 (FAT
  82. 32/large volumes) and will be required to apply the July 1997
  83. virus definitions set.

  85. To upgrade your Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95 program:

  87.   * Download the file called NAV95OB.EXE
  88.   * Place the file in an empty folder and execute the file
  89.     to begin the installation process.

  92.     definition set.

  98. UPDATEME.EXE and NAV95OB.EXE are located where the monthly virus
  99. definitions files update are normally found. They are available for
  100. download from the Symantec BBS, the Symantec FTP or Web site,
  101. CompuServe, America Online, or Microsoft Network. You can also call
  102. Customer Service at (800) 441-7234 to order a disk set.

  106. **  Disappearing Hard Drives                                        **
  107. **********************************************************************
  108. Several viruses, such as Frankenstein and Stoned.Empire.Monkey, cause
  109. your hard disk to "disappear" when booting from a clean floppy disk.
  110. This occurs because the virus either encrypts or relocates the hard
  111. disk partition table (a vital part of the disk's system area). 
  112.  
  113. All "appears" well when you boot from your hard disk because the
  114. virus actives in memory and tells DOS where the partition table is
  115. relocated, or acts as the partition table itself. If you boot clean,
  116. DOS can't find the partition table and the virus isn't around to give
  117. directions. You may receive an "Invalid drive specification" or
  118. similar error when trying to access the hard disk.
  119.  
  120. When you boot clean so NAV can repair such an infection, the hard
  121. disk will not appear in the drive list. Don't worry! NAV, with the
  122. default options enabled, will bypass DOS and look directly at the
  123. hard disk to check the system area for infection, no matter what you
  124. scan. For example, scanning a floppy disk will scan memory, the
  125. floppy disk, and the system area of the hard disk. If such an
  126. infection is discovered, you are alerted appropriately.

  128. NOTE: IDE hard drives larger than 1024 cylinders often require the
  129. use of additional driver or overlay files. If you have such a drive,
  130. you may need to include these additional files on your Norton
  131. AntiVirus Rescue Disk to ensure recovery from virus emergencies. Make
  132. sure that any special driver or overlay files for your hard drive,
  133. which are part of your normal system configuration, are included on
  134. your rescue disk.
