  9. Welcome to NeuralCrunch/2, the multithreaded 32-bit neural network
  10. exploration and development utility for OS/2!  NeuralCrunch/2 is
  11. designed to allow a general user to leap right into using and
  12. exploring neural network technology.  No prior experience with
  13. neural networks is assumed, but the experienced user should find
  14. both the online documentation and the reference documentation to
  15. be fairly complete in their discussion of the relevant mathematical
  16. issues involved in initialization and training.  Context sensitive
  17. help is available online for every configurable feature.

  19. Once NeuralCrunch/2 has been installed, the best way forward is to
  20. review the information available in the 'Getting Started' section of
  21. either the online help or the NeuralCrunch/2 User Manual.  A brief
  22. introduction is followed by a quick tour of the main features of
  23. NeuralCrunch/2 using some sample data files which should be contained
  24. in the distribution archive.

  28.  System Requirements

  31. NeuralCrunch/2 is a true 32-bit, multithreaded, native OS/2 application
  32. which will run under IBM OS/2 versions 2.1 and above, especially Warp,
  33. on at least i486DX compatible systems with a minimum of eight megabytes
  34. of memory, at least a generic VGA adapter, and slightly less than two
  35. and a half megabytes of disk space.  As with any complex piece of
  36. software being used under a multitasking operating system, the more
  37. memory the system has the better.  Likewise, NeuralCrunch/2 is optimized
  38. for performance on Warp/Pentium-based systems, so you will be happiest
  39. using Warp and at least some sort of Pentium.  There are no essential
  40. restrictions on the size of the data sets and networks which can be
  41. used in NeuralCrunch/2, but for larger problems you should ensure that
  42. your swap file has plenty of room to grow.  Some sort of printer is
  43. required for hardcopy output.

  47.  Installing NeuralCrunch/2
  48. ---------------------------

  50. You should find this 'read.me' file and an executable file,
  51. 'install.exe', after unzipping the distribution archive; note for
  52. successful installation you should either use Info-ZIP's unzip, or use
  53. the -d option if using pkunzip or any of its clones.  Any new information
  54. which did not make it into the documentation will be contained this file.

  56. Locate and run the executable 'install.exe'; this program will guide you
  57. through the installation and maintenance of NeuralCrunch/2.
  58.  
  59. Once NeuralCrunch/2 has been installed, you should find the following
  60. files in the installation directory:

  62.    ncrunch2.exe - executable
  63.    ncrunch2.hlp - help file for online help
  64.    ncrunch2.inf - NeuralCrunch/2 User Manual, accessible via the
  65.                   system 'view' command
  66.  
  67. These three files are essential to the proper and complete functioning
  68. of NeuralCrunch/2.  They must be located in the same directory.
  69.  
  70. You should also find the following additional files, which are used in
  71. the tutorial found in the 'Getting Started' sections of the help files
  72. and the User Manual; they should be located in a data subdirectory of
  73. the installation directory:

  75.    mgt.dsc - text file which describes the use of NeuralCrunch/2
  76.              to predict data samples from a Mackey-Glass time series
  77.    mgt.txt - numerical text file of data samples from a Mackey-Glass
  78.              time series
  79.    mgt.dat - binary form of the data in mgt.txt; created by saving
  80.              a data file in NeuralCrunch/2
  81.    mgt.cfs - network coefficient file created using the data in
  82.              mgt.dat; created by saving a coefficient file in
  83.              NeuralCrunch/2
  84.    mgt.ses - combined binary record of mgt.dat and mgt.cfs, which
  85.              permits the efficient reloading of both simultaneously;
  86.              created by saving a session file in NeuralCrunch/2

  88. There may be other examples of the use of NeuralCrunch/2 among the files
  89. in the data subdirectory; each example would be discussed in a file
  90. with the extension '.dsc'.

  92. You should also find a NeuralCrunch/2 folder on your desktop, in which
  93. icons for the executable and User Manual will be located.  This folder
  94. should also contain a shadow of the data subdirectory.

  109. This is a demonstration version of NeuralCrunch/2; no more than 200
  110. samples may be taken from a data file to be used in training and
  111. evaluation, and printing is disabled.  NeuralCrunch/2 should be
  112. available from the usual commercial outlets, including Indelible Blue,
  113. who can be reached via telephone at (800) 776-8284, or via their Internet
  114. catalog store at http://www.indelible-blue.com/ib.  If you are unable to
  115. find it, NeuralCrunch/2 may be obtained in one of three ways.

  117.   (i) Call the sales staff at Grace Pacific Numerics using the phone
  118.       number given on the registration form below.

  122.  (ii) Send a completed copy of the registration form to the
  123.       conventional mail address given on the form, and include either
  124.       US$50.00 or valid credit card information on the form.  Non-US
  125.       money orders are fine, but please, no local currencies other

  138.    latest version of NeuralCrunch/2.
  139.  * A hardcopy version of the reference documentation.

  142. The registered and commercial versions of NeuralCrunch/2 are always
  143. being improved, and upon registration the latest version will be
  144. immediately sent via air mail.  If it seems like a long time has
  145. passed since you registered and you still haven't received anything
  146. in return, drop a note to the e-mail address given on the registration
  147. form.  Although technical support is available only to owners of
  148. registered or commercial versions of NeuralCrunch/2, comments are
  149. welcome and may also be sent via the e-mail address on the registration
  150. form.

  153. NOT shareware and under no circumstances are copies of registered or
  154. commercial versions to be distributed, by any means, without a
  155. license.  Distribution of registered or commercial copies of

  157. and could result in substantial fines and imprisonment.
