INFORMATION ON USER'S MANUAL FOR CHEMICAL KINETICS SIMULATOR 1.0
----------------------------------------------------------------------
(Last updated 9.25.96 by Bill Hinsberg)
I. INTRODUCTION
The User's Manual for Chemical Kinetics Simulator v 1.0 (CKS) is
made available electronically in two formats: (1) as a file for
use with the Adobe Acrobat Reader program (i.e., in .PDF format),
and (2) in a printable (PostScript) file format.
The manual is approximately 200 pages in length overall. While
the manual was composed using screen snapshots from CKS 1.0 for
OS/2, the screen windows and dialogs for the MS Windows and
Macintosh versions of CKS are virtually identical in appearance
and function. The information and descriptions of use presented
in the User's Manual are equally applicable to the editions of
CKS v 1.0 for OS/2, Windows and Macintosh platforms.
II. MANUAL IN ADOBE ACROBAT FORMAT:
The User's Manual in Adobe Acrobat format allows on-screen
viewing of the complete manual including figures, and allows
printing of the manual using any OS/2-, Windows- or
Macintosh-compatible printer. In order to view or print this
version of the User's Manual, you must first obtain a copy of
Adobe Acrobat Reader for your operating system. Versions of
Adobe Acrobat Reader for OS/2, Windows and Macintosh are
available with a no-cost license from Adobe's WWW site:
http://www.adobe.com/
The Adobe Acrobat version of the User's Manual is available
electronically as an archive file which must be unarchived before
the manual may be printed or viewed. Users of OS/2 and Windows
should obtain the single archive file named MANPDF.ZIP. Users of
Macintosh should obtain the single archive file named MANPDF.HQX.
The unarchived Adobe Acrobat version of the User's Manual
occupies about 2 megabytes of disk space.
A. Decompressing the Adobe Acrobat version of the User's Manual:
1. Users of OS/2
To decompress MANPDF.ZIP you will need an 'unzipping'
program, such as PKUNZIP.EXE (DOS version), PKUNZIP2.EXE
(OS/2 version) or the UNZIP32 program from the INFOZIP
package (available within IBM on OS2TOOLS, and widely
available outside IBM (e.g. by anonymous ftp from
ftp.cdrom.com ). If you are using the InfoZip UNZIP32
utility, use the command
UNZIP32 MANPDF.ZIP -d d:\targetdir
(where 'd:\targetdir' is the location for the unzipped
files) from an OS/2 command line session. If you are using
the PKUNZIP2.EXE utility, use the command
PKUNZIP2 MANPDF.ZIP d:\targetdir
(where 'd:\targetdir' is the location for the unzipped
files) from an OS/2 command line session. If you are using
the PKUNZIP.EXE utility, use the command
PKUNZIP MANPDF.ZIP d:\targetdir
(where 'd:\targetdir' is the location for the unzipped
files) from a DOS command line session.
2. Users of Windows 3.1
To decompress MANPDF.ZIP you will need an 'unzipping'
program, such as PKUNZIP.EXE or the UNZIP386 program from
the INFOZIP package (available within IBM on PCTOOLS, and
widely available outside IBM (e.g. by anonymous ftp from
ftp.cdrom.com ). If you are using the InfoZip UNZIP386
utility, use the command
UNZIP386 MANPDF.ZIP -d d:\targetdir
(where 'd:\targetdir' is the location for the unzipped
files) from the DOS command line. If you are using the
PKUNZIP.EXE utility, use the command
PKUNZIP MANPDF.ZIP d:\targetdir
(where 'd:\targetdir' is the location for the unzipped
files) from the DOS command line.
3. Users of Macintosh
To decompress the file MANPDF.HQX you will need the Stuffit
Expander program, a freeware program widely available
outside IBM from many sources (e.g. by anonymous ftp from
ftp.cdrom.com ). Drop the MANPDF.HQX file on your Stuffit
Expander icon. This will create a folder named "CKS Manual
(Acrobat)".
B. Viewing and printing the Acrobat version of the User's Manual
The Adobe Acrobat Reader program includes an online manual that
details its use and functions. Refer to that document for
instructions on loading, viewing and printing files.
It is recommended that the Manual's Table of Contents is used as
a navigational aid when viewing on-screen. Links have been
placed in the Table of Contents to the manual's major sections.
It should be noted that page-numbering convention used by the
Adobe Acrobat Reader differs from that used in the User's Manual
itself. When using the Manual's Index to locate a specific
subject, refer to the page numbers printed on the Manual pages
rather than on the page numbers tabulated by the Acrobat
Reader program.
III. MANUAL IN POSTSCRIPT FORMAT:
The User's Manual in PostScript format allows printing of the
manual using any PostScript printer. Users of OS/2 and Windows
may also view the PostScript version of the User's Manual
on-screen using a graphics viewer utility capable of interpreting
PostScript files (for example the GhostScript/GhostView
interpreter programs, widely available for OS/2 and MS Windows).
The PostScript version of the User's Manual is available
electronically as compressed archive files. The component files
must be decompressed and unarchived before the User's Manual may
be printed or viewed. Users of OS/2 and Windows should obtain
the single archive file named MANUAL.ZIP. Users of Macintosh
should obtain the two archive files named MANUAL1.HQX and
MANUAL2.HQX
Be aware that the unarchived PostScript files will consume about
25 MBytes of disk space in total. They can be unarchived and
printed individually. The largest file (CHAPTER2.PS) is slightly
greater than 10 MB in size.
A. Decompressing the PostScript version of the User's Manual
1. Users of OS/2
To decompress MANUAL.ZIP you will need an 'unzipping'
program, such as PKUNZIP.EXE (DOS version), PKUNZIP2.EXE
(OS/2 version) or the UNZIP32 program from the INFOZIP
package (available within IBM on OS2TOOLS, and widely
available outside IBM (e.g. by anonymous ftp from
ftp.cdrom.com ). If you are using the InfoZip UNZIP32
utility, use the command
UNZIP32 MANUAL.ZIP -d d:\targetdir
(where 'd:\targetdir' is the location for the unzipped
files) from an OS/2 command line session. If you are using
the PKUNZIP2.EXE utility, use the command
PKUNZIP2 MANUAL.ZIP d:\targetdir
(where 'd:\targetdir' is the location for the unzipped
files) from an OS/2 command line session. If you are using
the PKUNZIP.EXE utility, use the command
PKUNZIP MANUAL.ZIP d:\targetdir
(where 'd:\targetdir' is the location for the unzipped
files) from a DOS command line session.
2. Users of Windows 3.1
To decompress MANUAL.ZIP you will need an 'unzipping'
program, such as PKUNZIP.EXE or the UNZIP386 program from
the INFOZIP package (available within IBM on PCTOOLS, and
widely available outside IBM (e.g. by anonymous ftp from
ftp.cdrom.com ). If you are using the InfoZip UNZIP386
utility, use the command
UNZIP386 MANUAL.ZIP -d d:\targetdir
(where 'd:\targetdir' is the location for the unzipped
files) from the DOS command line. If you are using the
PKUNZIP.EXE utility, use the command
PKUNZIP MANUAL.ZIP d:\targetdir
(where 'd:\targetdir' is the location for the unzipped
files) from the DOS command line.
3. Users of Macintosh
To decompress the files MANUAL1.HQX and MANUAL2.HQX you will
need the Stuffit Expander program, a freeware program widely
available outside IBM from many sources (e.g. by anonymous
ftp from ftp.cdrom.com ). Drop the .HQX files on your
Stuffit Expander icon. This will create two folders named
"CKS Manual 1" and "CKS Manual 2". The folder "CKS Manual
1" uses about 11 Mbytes of disk space; the folder "CKS
Manual 2" uses about 12.5 Mbytes of disk space. Together
these folders contain all the PostScript files which
comprise the User's Manual (listed below). The files may be
printed using a facility that sends PostScript files to a
PS-printer (for example the freeware facility DropOff PS,
widely available outside IBM (e.g. by anonymous ftp from
ftp.cdrom.com ).
B. Viewing, Printing and Assembling the PostScript version of
the User's Manual
The electronic version of the User's Manual for CKS v 1.0
consists of a set of files in PostScript format. These files are
individually printable on a generic PostScript printer, or may be
viewed on-screen using a graphics viewer utility capable of
interpreting PostScript files (for example the
GhostScript/GhostView interpreter programs, widely available for
OS/2 and MS Windows).
The individual component files are listed below in the order
that they should be assembled into the hardcopy manual:
