  1. This is a demo version of Software Installer for OS/2.  You will be able to perform all of the steps to create a diskette/CD-ROM installation for your product, except it will be a non-working installation.

  93.          Software Installer, Version 1.2.1b, for OS/2(*)
  94.          is a programming tool that helps you automate the
  95.          installation process for applications you develop.
  96.          You can use Software Installer to provide your users with
  97.          an easy and consistent way to install and maintain workstation
  98.          applications you develop for the OS/2 environment.

  100.          Software Installer provides services for installing,
  101.          updating, restoring, and deleting the workstation parts
  102.          of products that you distribute on diskette or initially
  103.          install from a host system.

  105.          With Software Installer you can install software on an
  106.          individual workstation, a LAN connected to the workstation,
  107.          or a combination of both.

  109.          You can create a standard installation procedure that
  110.          runs on multiple workstations, without requiring input

  193.   PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

  195.          o   IBM Operating System/2(*) (OS/2) Version 2.0 or 2.1
  196.              operating system.  ServicePak XR06055 is recommended.

  198.              NOTE:  Without the ServicePak, your installation will not
  199.              return the appropriate results from user exits even
  200.              though the exit completes correctly.  Also, Workplace
  201.              Shell objects created during an installation will not use
  202.              the specified icon.

  204.          o   IBM Developer's Toolkit for OS/2 Version 2.0.

  206.              NOTES:
  207.  
  208.                   1.  If the resource compiler (RC.EXE) is shipped with
  209.                   your version of OS/2, then the Developer's Toolkit for
  210.                   OS/2 is only required if you are changing the on-line
  211.                   help (see below); you can then disregard any notices
  212.                   about requiring the Developer's Toolkit for OS/2
  213.                   during the rename process (ISREN.CMD).

  215.                   2.  Your end users do not need to have the Developer's
  216.                   Toolkit for OS/2 their systems to install your products.

  218.          o   To install from an AS/400 host system, you need IBM
  219.              PC Support/400 (Program Number 5738-PC1) Version 2

  222.          o   To install from a VM, MVS, or VSE host system, you
  223.              need IBM Extended Services for OS/2 2.0 with
  224.              Communications Manager installed.

  277.   INSTALLING SOFTWARE INSTALLER FROM A DISKETTE DRIVE
  278.  
  279.          To install Software Installer from a diskette drive:
  280.  
  281.          1.  Insert the first disk into a diskette drive (in this
  282.              example the A drive is used).
  283.  
  284.          2.  Type the following on the OS/2 command line:
  285.  
  286.                A:\INSTALL
  287.  
  288.          3.  Press Enter.
  289.  
  290.          4.  Follow the on-screen prompts.
  291.  
  292.  
  293.   SETTING UP FOR INSTALLATION FROM A LAN SERVER
  294.  
  295.          If you have purchased multiple licenses of Software
  296.          Installer, you might want to consider placing it on a LAN
  297.          server for easier access.  To do this, perform the following
  298.          steps:
  299.  
  300.          1.  Create a directory on the LAN server to store the
  301.              Software Installer files.  For example:
  302.  
  303.                mkdir J:\INSTALL2
  304.  
  305.          2.  Copy each Software Installer diskette into this
  306.              directory.  You can do this using the OS/2 XCOPY
  307.              command.  For example:
  308.  
  309.                xcopy a:* J:\INSTALL2 /S
  310.  
  311.          3.  Repeat step 2 for each diskette.
  312.  
  313.          4.  Give all licensed users access to the LAN drive you
  314.              copied the diskettes to (in this example, the J drive).
  315.  
  316.          After performing these steps, users with access to the
  317.          LAN drive can access the alias drive\directory and
  318.          install Software Installer by typing:
  319.  
  320.            INSTALL
  321.  
  322.          Your LAN users are now ready to use Software Installer.
  323.  
  324.  
  325.   RUNNING SOFTWARE INSTALLER FROM A LOCAL AREA NETWORK
  326.  
  327.          If the Software Installer is installed on a LAN drive
  328.          that you have read access to, you do not have to install
  329.          Software Installer on your workstation.  If you prefer,
  330.          you can run it from the LAN.  To do this:
  331.  
  332.          1.  Ask your LAN administrator to give you access to the
  333.              LAN drive/directory.  Also, ask for the LAN
  334.              drive\directory's alias.
  335.  
  336.          2.  Access the alias drive\directory.
  337.  
  338.          3.  Type the following on the OS/2 command line:
  339.  
  340.                EPFIDLDS
  341.  
  342.          You are now ready to use Software Installer.
  343.  
  344.          NOTE:  If errors occur with multiple users, the LAN
  345.          administrator can increase the server resources such as
  346.          MAXOPENS, MAXSESSOPENS, and MAXSHARES.

  349.   ACCESSING THE ONLINE DOCUMENTATION
  350.  
  351.          When you install the Software Installer, you can have the
  352.          online Software Installer Reference document automatically
  353.          installed by selecting the ONLINE DOCUMENTATION component
  354.          from the Install-directories window.
  355.  
  356.          You can access the document from either the Workplace Shell
  357.          or from the OS/2 command line.
  358.  
  359.          To access the Software Installer Reference from the
  360.          Workplace Shell, double-click on the Software Installer
  361.          Reference object in the Software Installer folder.
  362.  
  363.          To access the Software Installer Reference from the OS/2
  364.          command line, do the following:
  365.  
  366.          1.  Change to the directory where the online Software
  367.              Installer Reference is installed.  The default directory
  368.              name used is C:\IBB\BOOK.
  369.  
  370.          2.  Type the following on the OS/2 command line:
  371.  
  372.                VIEW EPFIPGR.INF
  373.  
  374.          3.  Press Enter.  You will see the Contents window.
  375.  
  376.          4.  Double-click on the topic you want to view.

  381.   CHANGING THE ONLINE HELP (EPFIHPLB.HLP)
  382.  
  383.          The source file for the the online help is provided
  384.          so that you can customize it for your product's users.
  385.  
  386.          EPFIHPLB.HLP is the online help that can be viewed on the
  387.          workstation while using Software Installer.
  388.  
  389.          The source help file for Software Installer is EPFIHLIB.ITL.
  390.          This file is also in the C:\IBB\BOOK\SOURCE subdirectory.
  391.          You can change the text in this file. After changing the text,
  392.          you must recompile this ITL file to obtain the HLP file.
  393.          The compiler, IPFC.EXE, is part of the Developer's Toolkit for OS/2.
  394.  
  395.          Follow these steps to change the online help:
  396.  
  397.          1.  Modify EPFIHLIB.ITL using your favorite editor.
  398.  
  399.              NOTE:  DO NOT change the resource IDs (res=nnnn) that
  400.              identify the help panels.  These resource IDs associate
  401.              the help panels with the product's source code.  DO
  402.              NOT add or delete help panels or their resource IDs.
  403.  
  404.          2.  Run IPFC.EXE on EPFIHLIB.ITL.
  405.  
  406.                IPFC EPFIHLIB.ITL >EPFIHLIB.ERR
  407.  
  408.          3.  Check the compile messages and statistics in EPFIHLIB.ERR.
  409.  
  410.          4.  If you have errors in the EPFIHLIB.ERR, make corrections
  411.              to EPFIHLIB.ITL and repeat steps 1 and 2.
  412.  
  413.          5.  After compiling your revised EPFIHLIB.ITL to produce
  414.              an EPFIHLIB.HLP file, rename EPFIHLIB.HLP to EPFIHPLB.HLP.
  415.  
  416.          6.  Place EPFIHPLB.HLP into the C:\IBB\BIN subdirectory.
  417.  
  418.          NOTE:  Copying your new EPFIHPLB.HLP to the C:\IBB\BIN
  419.          directory will overwrite the EPFIHPLB.HLP that was originally
  420.          installed.  You may want to make a backup copy of
  421.          the original HLP file before copying your new version to
  422.          the C:\IBB\BIN subdirectory.
