Introduction
This README document contains information that
supplements the Ultimotion Workshop/2 Beta User's
Guide. The primary purpose of the Ultimotion
Workshop/2 Beta is to encourage development
feedback. Thank you for your interest in OS/2*,
MMPM/2*, and Ultimotion Workshop/2.
NOTE: If you are viewing this file with a program
that uses proportional fonts, you may wish
to change to a monospaced font, for the
best readability.
INSTALLATION
Refer to the Ultimotion Workshop/2 Beta User's
Guide for detailed instructions for installing the
Ultimotion Workshop/2 Beta.
After installation, check the CONFIG.SYS file
before shutting down and restarting. If the
following statement:
IFS=C:\OS2\HPFS.IFS
is missing, use the E editor and add the following
statement to the CONFIG.SYS before the first
DEVICE= statement:
DEVICE=C:\MMOS2\INSTALL\IBMLANLK.SYS C:\MMOS2\INSTALL\MMLOCKED.LST
where C: represents whatever drive contains the
MMOS2 directory.
SPECIFIC VIDEO CAPTURE ADAPTER INFORMATION
The following video capture adapters are
supported:
o IBM Video Capture Adapter/A
o Jovian SuperVia*
o Jovian QuickVia*
o Creative Labs Video Blaster*
o Sigma Designs WinMovie*
NOTE: If you have a Sigma Designs WinMovie
adapter, select Jovian QuickVia from the
installation menu.
A statement for the video capture adapter is added
to the CONFIG.SYS file. The following are
examples of the statements that are added:

Be sure to resolve any IRQ or I/O address
conflicts.
If it is necessary to alter any specific
parameters, such as switching from composite input
to Super VHS input, use a text editor to alter the
INI file (for the appropriate video capture
adapter) located in the \MMOS2 subdirectory.

o Jovian SuperVia VIDSVJ1$.INI
o Jovian QuickVia VIDQVJ1$.INI
o Creative Labs Video Blaster VIDVBC1$.INI

VIDEODISC SUPPORT
Ultimotion Workshop/2 provides videodisc support
for Pioneer laserdisc models LD-V4200, LD-V4300D,
LD-V4400, and LD-V8000.
DIGITAL VIDEO SUPPORT
The picture quality and performance of the
playback of digital video (.AVI) files is highly
dependent on the machine configuration. Video
clips will play more smoothly on machines with
faster processors, and the quality of the video
picture is better with SVGA or XGA video adapters.
Machine configurations which fall below the
performance requirements of digital video may
exhibit any of the following losses in
presentation quality:
o Loss of smoothness in video playback
o Picture clarity limited to 16 colors on VGA
displays
o In extreme cases, loss of the audio
soundtrack.
The minimum memory requirement for playback of
movie files is 7MB. However, 8-12MB is
recommended for better performance.
If you are playing more than one movie clip at a
time, you may receive an error message "Error
Allocating Memory from Heap." If this happens,
add the /H parameter to the following statement in
your CONFIG.SYS file, as follows:
DEVICE=d:\MMOS2\SSMDD.SYS /H:nn
where d is the drive on which you installed
MMPM/2, and nn is a number from 32 to 256. The
default is 32. For best results, set nn = 32 x
(the number of movie clips being played). For
example, if you plan on regularly viewing 2 clips
at a time, set nn to 64 (32 x 2).
NOTE: Scan and step backward are not supported
for movie playback.
REAL-TIME RECORDING
To produce a video output size of 320x240, a
maximum output frame rate of 7 frames per second
is recommended. To produce a video output size of
160x120, an output frame rate of 15 frames per
second is recommended.
A 25MHz 486 system or higher is recommended for
real-time recording. Slower systems can be used
but you must select lower frame rates or a smaller
window size. 12 megabytes of memory is required.
Monitor video is not supported to display the
monitor window during real-time recording; the
monitor window will disappear and re-appear
automatically.
Raw data capture is not supported. Compression
type is always Ultimotion Real-Time; None is not a
supported selection.
Real-time recording can be performed from
computer-controlled source input devices
(videodisc), but start and end marks cannot be
used to control the recording.
After selecting Record you may experience a
sizeable delay before recording actually begins.
EDITING MOVIE FILES
Copying from an input movie file that is pasted to
an output movie file will always paste at the
beginning of the output movie file. This does not
occur when pasting within the output file itself.
Copy, cut, and delete require both begin and end
marks to be set.
NOTE: Our test groups have observed the
following:
o Recording cannot be performed without
audio.
o When recording, the default maximum
total data rate is 100KB per second; a
higher rate results in higher quality.
o Odd Zoom settings may fail or hang on
SuperVIA cards.
o If the monitor is enabled during
frame-stepped recording you may
encounter black frames.
o After capturing a movie file you may
experience a problem seeking within the
file if you attempt to seek before
saving the movie file.
o There may be a monitor window delay for
audio and digital video playback.
o On some machines with XGA/2 display
adapters, digital video playback may
not operate correctly. The symptoms
are a system hang or audio with no
video. Digital video requires XGA/2
equipped systems to have the "1 MB VRAM
Aperture Base Address" enabled. View
the configuration and reconfigure your
machine appropriately. If you have
16MB of memory or more, remove enough
to get down to 15MB of memory or less.
o When you are playing a software motion
video selection, it may show through on
the screen after you switch to a
full-screen DOS, OS/2, or WIN-OS/2
session. To prevent this from
occurring, pause the digital video
playback or hide/minimize the playback
window before switching to the
full-screen session.
o If you are using a Sound Blaster audio
card, it is recommended that you close
the Digital Video Recorder and restart
it after each record.
o After each record, select New from the
File menu before the next record.
o When saving a movie file to a different
drive (other than the default) it may
take a long period of time. Be sure
that all disk activity has completed
before closing the Digital Video
Recorder to avoid corrupting the movie
file.
o Several temporary files beginning with
00000000 may exist in the \MMOS2
subdirectory. These files can be
deleted.
o If recorded sound is "scratchy" vary the audio
input level on the audio page in the record
setup notebook.
o Video adjustments are not always set correctly
before frame step recording. To have the
adjustments applied to the recording, turn off
the monitor window, then open the video adjustment
window and select UNDO before starting the recording.
o The I/O base address documentation you have for
the WinMovie/QuickVIA capture cards may contain
an error - the jumper positions for I/O address
pairs 348-349 and 390-391 may be reversed.
o Playback of some INDEO* files may cause traps after
this beta is installed, particularly if the AVI file
doesn't contain an index.
INDEO* DIGITAL VIDEO SUPPORT
MMPM/2 supports the playback of .AVI files that
utilize Intel's video compression technique, with
the following limitations:
o Pel-doubling and pel-halving are not supported
(The size of a given video clip cannot be
changed).
o Video clips cannot be displayed in VGA or
24-bit color video modes. SVGA and XGA modes
are supported.
o i750* accelerator hardware will not be
utilized.
