  11.   of some additional effects.  There is no new funtionality.

  13. Introduction
  14. ------------
  15. Sounder is a digital music player for OS/2 PM and MMPM/2. More 
  16. specically, it is designed to play MOD, MTM, and S3M music files. 
  17. Sounder is shareware. That is, it may be freely distributed but 
  18. I retain the copyright. In addition, satisfied users are encouraged
  19. to become registered users (details later).

  24. responsibility should damage occur due to a program malfuntion.

  26. General
  27. -------
  28. This program should be simple enough to operate that nothing much 
  29. need be said. If you have any questions at all or any suggestions, 
  30. please contact me on CIS or the Internet. I already have some 
  31. suggestions and will be looking at these in the near future.

  33. The first question you are likely to have is: "what goes in the
  34. graphics window?" I actually do have some graphical, per channel,
  35. volume level indicaters working. However, they require some DLLs
  36. in the MMOS2 directory that IBM has not yet released. I expect to
  37. see them out fairly soon.

  39. What about the XM music files? I finally located the XM file spec
  40. and will be looking at these as soon as Sounder release 1.2 is out.

  42. Sounder is a cousin of PMPoze (my MOD composer for OS/2). I may
  43. merge these two programs in the future, so for now, if you register 
  44. one, you register both. If you registered PMPoze, you are already
  45. registered for Sounder.

  47. Music Files
  48. -----------
  49. A generic mod file is a song file containing recorded instruments
  50. (samples) and notes. They are self-contained and only a sound card
  51. is needed to play them. The brand MOD was the original digital music
  52. file and originated on the Amiga. Today, MODs come in 4, 6, and 8
  53. track (voice (channel)) versions. The number of voices is simply
  54. the number of instruments that can be played at once. There have been
  55. many spin offs from these early mods, and the two supported by Sounder 
  56. are MTMs and S3Ms. MTM is basically a MOD with up to 32 channels, 
  57. although most have 16 or fewer. S3Ms also have 16 (or fewer) channels
  58. but have more information in a note. Generally speaking, MTMs sound 
  59. better than MODs and S3Ms sound better than MTMs. A good S3M will 
  60. have almost "CD quality" when played all out at 44.1khz and 16-bits. 
  61. By the way, my 486/33 is not quite fast enough to sustain 44.1khz 
  62. on 16 channels.

  73. Quite a few mods are posted almost daily. The newsgroup is also good
  74. for discovering other sites, including WWW sites. Also, most good 
  75. BBSs have MODs and there are a few on Compuserve (GO SSFORUM).
