  5. Introduction
  6. ------------
  7. Sounder is a digital music player for OS/2 PM and MMPM/2. More 
  8. specically, it is designed to play MOD, MTM, and S3M music files. 
  9. Sounder is shareware. That is, it may be freely distributed but 
  10. I retain the copyright. In addition, satisfied users are encouraged
  11. to become registered users (details later).

  15. This program should work as intended and I can assume no 
  16. responsibility should damage occur due to a program malfuntion.

  18. General
  19. -------
  20. This program should be simple enough to operate that nothing much 
  21. need be said. If you have any questions at all or any suggestions, 
  22. please contact me on CIS or the Internet. I already have some 
  23. suggestions and will be looking at these in the near future.

  25. The first question you are likely to have is: "what goes in the
  26. graphics window?" I actually do have some graphical, per channel,
  27. volume level indicaters working. However, they require some DLLs
  28. in the MMOS2 directory that IBM has not yet released. I expect to
  29. see them out fairly soon.

  31. What about the XM music files? I finally located the XM file spec
  32. and will be looking at these as soon as Sounder release 1.0 is out.

  34. Sounder is a cousin of PMPoze (my MOD composer for OS/2). I may
  35. merge these two programs in the future, so for now, if you register 
  36. one, you register both. If you registered PMPoze, you are already
  37. registered for Sounder.
  38.  
  39. Music Files
  40. -----------
  41. A generic mod file is a song file containing recorded instruments
  42. (samples) and notes. They are self-contained and only a sound card
  43. is needed to play them. The brand MOD was the original digital music
  44. file and originated on the Amiga. Today, MODs come in 4, 6, and 8
  45. track (voice (channel)) versions. A voice is simply the number of 
  46. instruments that can be played at once. There have been many spin 
  47. offs from these early mods, and the two supported by Sounder are MTMs 
  48. and S3Ms. MTM is basically a MOD with up to 32 channels, although most 
  49. have 16 or fewer. S3Ms also have 16 (or fewer) channels but have more 
  50. information in a note. Generally speaking, MTMs sound better than MODs 
  51. and S3Ms sound better than MTMs. A good S3M will have almost "CD quality"
  52. when played all out at 44.1khz and 16-bits. By the way, my 486/33
  53. is not quite fast enough to sustain 44.1khz on 16 channels.

  64. Quite a few mods are posted almost daily. The newsgroup is also good
  65. for discovering other sites, including WWW sites. Also, most good 
  66. BBSs have MODs and there are a few on Compuserve (GO SSFORUM).
