This is documentation for the IBM PC version (an Amiga version is also
available) of "calc". Included here is both the OS/2 and DOS version. V1.0 had
a problem with starting timecode input; this has been fixed.
This is a calculator for music recording, video and film production, and is
useful for scoring to video with a MIDI sequencer.
Features
------------
It will add and subtract (sorry, no multiply/divide ) in the following:
1) measures and beats ( you supply time signature and beats per minute )
2) MIDI clocks
3) feet and frames ( for film )
4) SMPTE timecode ( 24, 35, 30 frames/second, plus "dropframe")
Currently we default to SMPTE mode, with the top entry line selected.
Any digit keys you press will be entered into this line. To make it negative
(if you want to subtract it) press the '-' (minus) key until the minus sign
appears in front of the number. To enter the other number in your calculation
you have to cursor down to the second entry field.
This selects it as the current entry field. The numbers are calculated
whenever you press ENTER. This allows us to leave a number in the one of the
entry fields and just change the other for a new result. This is useful for
calculating offsets for video production or adding a certain amount of midi
clocks to a list of numbers.
The calculator will also convert one type to another. For instance, if you're
sequencing and you want to know how long a particular part is, just enter the
number of midi clocks from the sequencer and press SMPTE 30 to convert the
midi clocks to timecode.
If you're doing audio editing with a syncronizer that accepts subframes, you
can press the '.' key to turn on subframes for the timecode calculations.
We use 100 subframes to the frame; check to make sure your system uses this
as well. Some use 80 subframes/frame.
Future enhancements to the calculator will include a scratchpad to store
a list of timecode (or midi clocks, or...) and operate on them.
