  8. I have decided to package this together to make installation of AOL Instant
  9. Messenger for Java easier for all OS/2 users.
  10.  
  11. #1: What is it?
  12. ───────────────
  13. AOL Instant Messenger (AIM hereinafter) is a small application like the
  14. famous ICQ ("I-seek-u"), which lets you keep in touch and know exactly
  15. when friends/family/etc are logged into the Net.
  16.  
  17. Netscape recently decided to bundle AIM into the latest Communicator 4
  18. releases. And the good news is that... AOL followed the ICQ example and
  19. also released a Java version of their program!.
  20.  
  21. The main advantage of AIM over ICQ, in my opinion, is that it allows you
  22. to have separate 'screen names' and login using different IDs on the same
  23. PC, while ICQ customizes each installation for a SINGLE user ID.
  24.  
  25. #2: What you need:
  26. ─────────────────
  27. -OS/2 Warp 4.0
  28. -Java 1.1.4.
  29. -The contents of this .zip file you've unzipped and are reading now.

  31. DO NOT TRY TO RUN IT UNDER JAVA 1.1.1 or much less 1.0.2. The real stable
  32. release of Java (and fast!) for OS/2 is 1.1.4.

  34. #3: Procedure:
  35. ─────────────

  37. Use UNZIP for OS/2 or PKZIP 2.50 for OS/2 to uncompress the aim_generic.zip
  38. file to an hpfs drive.
  39.  
  40. CD to the \AIM dir and unzip aim_os2icon.zip.
  41.  
  42. Copy AIM.CMD and AIM2.CMD to \aim
  43.  
  44. Start your favorite text editor and edit the AIM2.CMD file.
  45.  
  46. It looks like this:

  48. set java_compiler=JAVAX
  49. set CLASSPATH=AIM.jar;X:\java11\lib\classes.zip;%CLASSPATH%
  50. java.exe main.Oscar
  51. exit

  54. REPLACE "X:" with the drive letter that holds your java 1.1.4 installation.

  56. Create now an object on your desktop pointing to x:\aim\aim.cmd and
  57. with x:\aim as your work dir.

  59. THAT's ALL!. Now try double-clicking on the object and AIM for Java should
  60. start.

  62. #4 REGISTRATION:

  65. You need to register as an AIM user to establish your 'screen name' and
  66. password. You can do this by pointing your Netscape for OS/2 to the URL:
  67. http://register.oscar.aol.com/netscape_new
