HOW TO SETUP AOL INSTANT MESSENGER FOR JAVA with OS/2 WARP 4.0
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
by Fernando Cassia. Dec '97
Buenos Aires, Argentina.
I have decided to package this together to make installation of AOL Instant
Messenger for Java easier for all OS/2 users.
#1: What is it?
───────────────
AOL Instant Messenger (AIM hereinafter) is a small application like the
famous ICQ ("I-seek-u"), which lets you keep in touch and know exactly
when friends/family/etc are logged into the Net.
Netscape recently decided to bundle AIM into the latest Communicator 4
releases. And the good news is that... AOL followed the ICQ example and
also released a Java version of their program!.
The main advantage of AIM over ICQ, in my opinion, is that it allows you
to have separate 'screen names' and login using different IDs on the same
PC, while ICQ customizes each installation for a SINGLE user ID.
#2: What you need:
─────────────────
-OS/2 Warp 4.0
-Java 1.1.4.
-The contents of this .zip file you've unzipped and are reading now.
DO NOT TRY TO RUN IT UNDER JAVA 1.1.1 or much less 1.0.2. The real stable
release of Java (and fast!) for OS/2 is 1.1.4.
#3: Procedure:
─────────────
Use UNZIP for OS/2 or PKZIP 2.50 for OS/2 to uncompress the aim_generic.zip
file to an hpfs drive.
CD to the \AIM dir and unzip aim_os2icon.zip.
Copy AIM.CMD and AIM2.CMD to \aim
Start your favorite text editor and edit the AIM2.CMD file.
It looks like this:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
set java_compiler=JAVAX
set CLASSPATH=AIM.jar;X:\java11\lib\classes.zip;%CLASSPATH%
java.exe main.Oscar
exit
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
REPLACE "X:" with the drive letter that holds your java 1.1.4 installation.
Create now an object on your desktop pointing to x:\aim\aim.cmd and
with x:\aim as your work dir.
THAT's ALL!. Now try double-clicking on the object and AIM for Java should
start.
#4 REGISTRATION:
───────────────
You need to register as an AIM user to establish your 'screen name' and
password. You can do this by pointing your Netscape for OS/2 to the URL:
http://register.oscar.aol.com/netscape_new
(There might be others, but this is the one I've used).
#5 THE END. :-D
Hope to find many os/2 users there. BTW: My screen ID on AIM is: FCASSIA
