ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1. Preferences Dialog ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The preferences dialog is used to set various user controlled values.
Default View
The default view determines how each page will be displayed when it is first
shown by the viewer. After a page is loaded into the viewer, the user may zoom
in or out to any scale.
100%
The image is displayed so that one image pixel equals one screen pixel.
Fit to Width
The image is optimized to fit the available width of the displayed window.
If the size of the view window is changed, the document will be sized to
fill its width.
Fit to Window
The image is sized to display the entire page in the available window size.
If the size of the view window is changed, the document will be sized to
fill the available space.
Text Page Size
Use these choices to specify how text pages are to be formatted for the
display. Once a text document is stored, its column and row settings are
preserved with the document.
FileRoom View
When the Icons choice is selected, the FileRoom will appear as a group of file
cabinet icons. When selected, a file cabinet will open into a window full of
its folder icons. When the Text choice is selected, the FileRoom will display
the file cabinets and folders as a scrollable list of names. This is more
efficient when working with large numbers of file cabinets and folders. The
icon view provides for a more aesthetic view of the file cabinet / folder
hierarchy and is helpful for new users. Icon view is the default setting.
Acquire Window View
This option allows you to choose whether pages appear in the Acquire window as
small or large thumbnails. The default setting is small thumbnails and this is
probably the best choice for displays smaller than 1024x768.
B+W Contrast
Use these choices to determine the density of the image when displayed at a
scale other than 100%. When viewing a page at a reduced view, the pixels
making up the image will be folded onto each other. These settings determine
how dark to allow the image to get when shown at a reduced scale. Scale to
Gray is a special option that effectively doubles the resolution of the display
you are using by using gray levels to simulate more pixels.
Background Bitmap
This option allows you to choose a bitmap or pattern to use as the background
of the Image Edition application. Image Edition's windows will cover this
background, but it is useful for displaying a company logo or a pleasant
pattern.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2. Image Information Dialog ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use this option to display detailed information about the document in the
active Viewer window. The information fields of the document are not modifiable
from this window; it is for display only.
The following information fields are displayed:
Image Size
The width and height of the image in pixels.
Resolution
The scan resolution of the image in dots per inch.
File Size
The size of the image file in bytes.
File Type
The type and compression method. e.g. TIFF G4
Bits Per Pixel
Bit density of image, 1bpp = monochrome, 8bpp =256 colors.
Number of Pages
Total pages contained in the image file.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3. Customize Index Dialog ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The Customize dialog allows the names given to five of the database fields to
be customized. Shown on the left is the default name given to each of the
fields and the custom name can be entered on the right. Each custom name may
be from 1 to 20 characters in length and is displayed in all parts of the
program when the appropriate database field is referenced. For example, if the
Document Name label is changed to Invoice Number, this label will be displayed
at the top of the Document Access window and all other places where this field
is displayed.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4. Change Password Dialog ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The Change Password dialog allows the user to change their sign-on password. If
the old password is entered correctly, the new password will take effect the
next time the program is started. A valid password is a combination of any
displayable characters and from 1 to 20 characters in length.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5. Password Dialog ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The Password dialog is displayed each time Image Edition is started to restrict
usage on a particular station to only those with authorized access. A valid
password is any combination of displayable characters from 1 to 20 characters
in length. Pressing the Change button allows the user to change the password,
but only if the old password is entered correctly first.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 6. Goto Page Dialog ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The Goto Page dialog allows the user to jump directly to a specific page of a
multi-page document Press the icon on the toolbar or click on the Goto Page...
option under the View menu.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 7. Move Documents Dialog ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The Move Documents dialog allows the user move documents from one folder to
another. Documents that are hightlighted (selected) in the Document Access
window will be moved to the chosen folder. Documents can only be moved within
a file cabinet with this function. To move documents from one file cabinet to
another, use the Copy Folder and Integrate functions.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8. Color Modification Dialog ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The Color Modification dialog allows the user to change the color content of an
image. You may convert an image to more or less bits per pixel. Converting an
image to more bits per pixel may sound like a useless option, but there are
times when you would like to add more color to an image than was there
previously. For example, if you would like to add color to a monochrome image,
the majority of paint programs will only let you edit it in black and white.
With Image Edition, you can first convert the bi-level image to a 16-color
image, then use your favorite paint program to add color. When converting an
image to 4bpp (16-colors) the default VGA palette will be used since the
majority of times, this is the desired target palette. When converting to fewer
bits per pixel, you may choose one of three options:
Best Color Choices
This option will simply pick the best match for each color in the target bit
density. This is the fastest option, but will usually give the least
desirable results.
Ordered Dither
This option uses a Bayer ordered dither pattern to reduce the number of
colors. This option is quick and will give reasonable results, but will ha
ve a noticeable pattern in the output. This is sometimes the best option
for doing black and white printouts.
Error Diffusion
This option uses a Floyd-Steinberg error diffusion filter to reduce the
number of colors. This is the most processor intensive option, but will
yield the most visually pleasing results of the three. The resulting image
will have a slight graininess to it, but there should be no noticeable
pattern to the dots.
After using any of the above options, the image will probably appear distorted
if viewed at a zoom of anything other than 100%. This is because the pattern
of dots must be fully intact to see the image correctly. When viewing at a
scale other than 100%, some of the pixels must be ignored in order to squeeze
the entire image into fewer pixels. Click with the right mouse button to zoom
in to 100% if the image looks strange after conversion. The operation is not
reversible, however the image may be reloaded from wherever it came from.
Changes made to the image are not stored until the Update Thumbnail or Export
Page options are used to store the image data to disk.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 9. Resize Dialog ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The Resize dialog allows the user to change the size of a page (image). The
image size may be changed in terms of pixels, inches or dots per inch. For
example, if an image was scanned at 300 dpi and it can be viewed clearly at a
lower resolution it can be resized to effectively change the resolution to a
lower value. The operation is not reversible, however the image may be reloaded
from wherever it came from. Changes made to the image are not stored until the
Update Thumbnail or Export Page options are used to store the image data to
disk.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 10. Find Folder Dialog ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The Find Folder dialog allows the user to search for a folder name across the
current file cabinet. A complete name or just a piece of a name may be entered
to search. When the desired folder is found, double-clicking on its name in
the list, or clicking on the Open button will select that folder as the current
folder and the FileRoom dialog will be dismissed.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 11. File Cabinet Configuration Dialog ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The file cabinet configuration dialog allows the creation, deletion and editing
of file cabinets. A list of all of the current file cabinets is displayed to
allow them to be edited. When a file cabinet is created, it is assigned a
default drive letter for its folders; this drive letter may be overridden when
folders are created. File cabinet names may be any displayable characters from
1 to 20 characters in length. Since file cabinet names are converted to create
8.3 file names, it is possible to have file cabinet names that are unique, but
are not allowed because when converted they are no longer unique. A note about
this conversion: Characters that DOS considers illegal for filenames are
converted to underscores, and only the first 8 characters of the file cabinet
name are used for the file name.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 12. Regenerate Index Dialog ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
After a fatal loss of file cabinet database information, it is possible to
recover the database index from the image files on their various partitions.
This procedure should be considered a last resort if the index information is
accidentally deleted. It is advisable to keep a recent backup copy of the
\INDEX directory in case of data loss. Enter the drive letter of where the
documents are stored and press the Find button to locate all of the file
cabinets stored on that drive. In the listbox will appear the numerical names
of all of the file cabinets which have documents on the drive searched. Press
the Regenerate button to restore the index information from the image files.
The checkbox at the bottom forces a clean start when regenerating the index,
otherwise the new documents will be merged with existing documents and file
cabinets. After the regenerate operation, file cabinet names that were not
previously in the index (possibly because the entire index directory was lost)
will appear as numerical names. Use the File Cabinet Configuration Dialog to
restore the original file cabinet names. Folder names will be recovered from
the documents, but not file cabinet names.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 13. Database Maintenance Dialog ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The dialog is used to perform the following maintenance functions:
Regenerate Index
This option is useful if the database files (not the TIFF Files
themselves) are accidentally deleted. Given a drive letter, this
function will search for all image files created by Image Edition on the
specified drive and reconstruct all the folders and documents stored
there.
Copy Folder
This option allows the administrator to copy selected documents within a
folder to another drive. For example, to move documents from one location
to another, use this option to copy them to a floppy and use the
Integrate Documents option to integrate them into the database of another
location.
Delete Folder
This option allows the deletion of entire folder full of documents. The
folder and documents are deleted from the database and the files
containing the images are permanently deleted.
Backup Index
Use this function when, as an administrator you want to backup the index
(database) files of Image Edition.
Move Folder
This function allows a folder to be moved from one file cabinet to
another. The folder name must not already exist in the destination file
cabinet, or the move operation will not be allowed.
Integrate Documents
The Integrate function allows documents previously copied with the Copy
Folder function to be integrated into the current file cabinet and
folder.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 14. Move Folder Dialog ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The Move Folder dialog allows a folder and all of its documents to be moved
from one file cabinet to another. The currently selected folder will be moved
to the chosen file cabinet. To choose a different folder, select the FileRoom
button. The drive letter of the current folder is displayed, and is used as
the default drive letter of the where the folder will be moved. Since a folder
from any file cabinet may reside on any drive, this can be changed. If a folder
of the same name already exists on the destination file cabinet, it must be
deleted before moving the selected folder to that file cabinet.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 15. File Cabinet Password Dialog ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
For file cabinets which have been password protected, the correct password must
be entered before the file cabinet can be accessed. Once the correct password
is entered, all folders within the file cabinet will remain accessible until
another file cabinet is selected or until the Image Edition application is
exited. The file cabinet password may be from 1 to 9 characters in length.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 16. FileRoom Window ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The FileRoom Window is activated by pressing the icon on the Toolbar or
choosing Open Documents from the File Menu. It allows the selection of any
file cabinet and any folder within the selected file cabinet. As file cabinet
names are selected from the list on the left, the corresponding folder names
will be displayed in the list on the right. Selecting a file cabinet and
folder with the mouse will cause all subsequent document operations to take
place in that folder Double clicking on a folder name, or selecting the Open
button will open the Document Access Window to display the contents of the
selected folder. All operations will use the selected file cabinet and folder
until a different one is chosen.
When a file cabinet is password protected, selecting it in the list will cause
the File Cabinet Password Dialog to be displayed. The list of folders present
in the file cabinet will not be displayed or accessible until the correct
password is entered.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 17. Search Dialog ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Clicking on the icon, or the Search... item under the File menu will display
this dialog. A keyword from 1 to 32 characters in length is used to compare
with various fields of each document. The checked boxes represent which fields
the string will be compared with. The search word is compared against all parts
of all words; for example, if the search string "ARTI" will match against the
name "MARTIN" in a search. Only the current folder will be searched, unless
the search all folders button is checked. In that case, the search will be
performed on all folders within the current file cabinet.
As well as searching, this dialog allows the selection of the format used to
display information in the Document Access Window. The chosen sort field will
be used to sort the contents of this window and will be shown in the leftmost
column.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 18. New Folder Dialog ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The New Folder Dialog allows the creation of new folders in the currently
selected file cabinet. A folder name may be from 1 to 20 characters in length.
The drive letter specified for the folder is where the image files representing
documents will be copied.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 19. New File Cabinet Dialog ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
When creating new file cabinets, a unique file cabinet name of 1 to 20
characters must be provided. File cabinet names may be any displayable
characters from 1 to 20 characters in length. Since file cabinet names are
converted to create 8.3 file names, it is possible to have file cabinet names
that are unique, but are not allowed because when converted they are no longer
unique. A note about this conversion: Characters that DOS considers illegal
for filenames are converted to underscores, and only the first 8 characters of
the file cabinet name are used for the file name.
The default doc drive specifies the default drive letter which will be
displayed when creating folders. This drive letter may be changed when each
folder is created.
Each file cabinet may be protected by a password. The password may be from 1
to 9 characters in length.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 20. Add Document Dialog ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
When a selected range of pages is ready to be stored into a document, various
index information about the document must be entered.
Note that In version 1.2, the field names can be changed to be more appropriate
for the user application. (See Customize Dialog for more information).
The first step would normally be to press the File Room button to choose the
desired destination file cabinet and folder. After choosing a destination
folder, information describing a document must be entered. Some fields are
required, others are optional.

feature increments the Document Name by 1 for each new document.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 21. Edit Document Dialog ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This dialog allows the database information for a particular document to be
edited. Change the desired fields and press the OK button to store the changes.
To change the pages which comprise a document, click the Re-Acquire button.
Pressing this button will send every page of the document to the Acquire
window. Add or remove the desired pages and after doing this, the next store
operation from the Acquire window will store the selected pages back to the
original document.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 22. Document Info Dialog ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This dialog displays the database information associated with the current
document. The information is for display only and cannot be changed from this
dialog. This dialog may be displayed by choosing the Info... option in the
File menu, clicking the Info... option in the floating menu, or clicking on the
icon on the toolbar. The info is displayed for either the topmost document
window, or the selected document name in the Document Access window.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 23. Acquire Options Dialog ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
There are three sub dialogs which allow various options to be set.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 24. Delete Folder Dialog ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This deletes the current folder and all of its documents. The current file
cabinet and folder are displayed and may be changed by pressing the File Room
button. Once a folder has been deleted, if the documents were stored on
read/write media there is no way to recover them. Documents which are stored on
read-only media may be recovered by using the Regenerate function.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 25. Backup Index Dialog ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
It is advisable to periodically back up the database index to prevent data
loss. Enter the destination drive letter and the contents of the \INDEX
directory will be copied to the destination drive and placed in the \INDEX
directory.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 26. Copy Folder Dialog ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This function is useful for moving a set of documents from one computer system
to another that are not connected by a network. A list of all documents in the
current folder is displayed. Press the File Room button to select a different
file cabinet or folder. Next, select all of the documents to be copied by
clicking the left mouse button over each document name. Enter the destination
drive and all of the selected documents will be copied to the
\IMAGES\00000000\00000000 directory on that drive.
Example usage
To move documents from one system to another via floppy disk, copy the desired
documents to a floppy, and use the Integrate function on the other system to
bring those documents into the database of the other system.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 27. How To Use The Document Access Window ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
To open the Document Access Window, click on the icon on the toolbar. The
Document Access Window shows the currently selected folder contents in a list
covering most of the window. To perform any action on an existing document, it
must be selected (indicated by inverse colors). To select one or more
documents, the user clicks the left mouse button while pointing to the
documents of interest. Multiple documents may be selected at once for viewing
or moving. Pressing the right mouse button will display a floating menu with
options for the selected documents. Documents may be viewed either by choosing
the View option from the floating menu, double clicking on a document name, or
clicking on the icon on the toolbar. If multiple documents are selected,
attempting to view them will result in a window opening for each selected
document.
While selected, the user may View, display Info, Edit, Move or Delete documents
by using options under the File Menu or from the floating menu.
To view the contents of a different folder use the FileRoom Window.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 28. Search Results Window ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The search results window, similar to the Document Access window, displays
matching documents from the last search in a list. One or more documents may
be selected from the list for viewing, but other functions possible from the
Document Access window are not allowed from the Search Results window. Double
clicking on a document name or clicking on the icon will display all selected
documents.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 29. Document Configuration Dialog ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
There are four drive letters used in the configuration:
Default Doc drive
This drive letter is the default drive assumed for each file cabinet. When
each file cabinet is created, this drive letter is assumed, but may be
changed.
Doc Index drive
This drive specifies where the database and associated files are stored.
The database files are stored in the \INDEX directory on the given drive.
If working with a network and the database information is stored on a
network server machine, each client machine's redirected drive may have a
different letter. Image Edition allows each user to see the server as a
different drive letter with no ill effects.
Temp Doc drive
During document creation, temporary image files are created and can take up
a large amount of space. This drive specifies where those files will be
stored before they are merged to become documents. Images are stored in
the \IE_TEMP directory on this drive.
Coach drive
To use the Coach help feature, it is necessary to specify the drive where
the coach files are located. This drive will most likely be a CDROM drive.
The two other buttons on this dialog allow the selection of a TWAIN scanner
source and file cabinets to be created, edited and deleted.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 30. How To Use The Acquire New Documents Window ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Documents are composed of one or more text pages, image pages or external
files. Text pages must be imported with the Import option. Image pages may be
imported from existing image files or faxes, or received from a supported
scanner. The pages which are joined together to form a document may be
combined from any source in any order. For example, a document may have a fax
as its first page followed by ten pages received from a scanner. New documents
are created by using the Acquire New Documents window as described below. To
open the Acquire Documents window click on the icon on the toolbar. You may
get images from arbitrary files (including bitmaps and faxes) by pressing the
Import button, or from a TWAIN compatible scanner if one is connected to the
system. Each page, as it is acquired, will appear as a thumbnail view in the
window.
Selecting A Range of Pages
A page range is selected with the mouse by pressing the left button over the
thumbnail of choice and dragging the mouse over the pages which will be
included in the range. A blue square around the thumbnails indicates pages
included in the selected range. An alternate method to select a range of pages
is to press and hold the shift key, and then use the arrow keys to move the
vertical bar cursor to select more pages. By double-clicking the left mouse
button, the user may view a page in an image window. Clicking the right mouse
button will display a floating menu of choices. A range of pages indicates
which pages will be Deleted, Moved, or Stored to form a document. If no pages
are selected, all pages will be considered selected.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 31. Integrate Documents Dialog ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The Integrate function allows documents previously copied with the Copy Folder
function to be integrated into the current file cabinet and folder. To select
a different destination file cabinet or folder, click on the File Room button.
Only the drive letter needs to be entered and all documents previously copied
to that drive will be added to the current folder. The documents will be
integrated from the \IMAGES\00000000\00000000 directory on the given drive. A
progress dialog box will display each document name as it is being copied. The
original documents are not deleted after the integrate operation.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 32. Photo CD Options Dialog ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Since Photo CD files contain multiple image resolutions simultaneously, it is
necessary to choose a resolution before loading the image. The choice of bit
densities is given because the larger image sizes can consume a huge quantity
of memory and by loading a reduced color image, it not only uses less memory,
but it can be loaded much more quickly.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 33. Sticky Notes Dialog ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
A sticky note may be added to any document. Type the text for the sticky note
into the editable field and click OK to store it. At a later time, the sticky
note contents may be changed from the same dialog box. To delete a sticky
note, simply delete all of the text of the sticky note and click OK; the note
and its icon will be deleted..
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 34. Text Search Dialog ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Text documents may be searched for the occurrence of a keyword. The search
will look at all pages within the document for the given word. When the search
word is found, the document window will display the page that the search word
was found so that the entire page fits within the window and draw a highlight
box around the line containing the first occurrence of the word..
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 35. Launch Pad Dialog ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
A file or program may be attached to a document as a Launch Pad. Enter the
name of the file or EXE in the first edit field. If the name entered is of an
EXE, command line parameters for the EXE may be entered on the second line.
After clicking OK, a small button will appear on the document view window to
activate the Launch Pad. Once a launch pad has been added to a document it can
later be changed or removed. To remove a Launch Pad from a document simply
erase the filename from the first entry field and click OK. The LP button will
be removed from the document view window.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 36. Rotate Dialog ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Images may be rotated to any angle from this dialog. There are three methods
to enter the angle desired: Press one of the three radio buttons to rotate 90,
180 or 270 degrees, type an angle into the numerical field below the buttons,
or drag the scroll bar with the mouse. The large arrow to the right of the
angle displays the orientation the page will be after it is rotated. The arrow
pointing up indicates no rotation (current orientation). Rotating an image to
angles other than 90, 180, or 270 degrees can produce unwanted jaggies in the
image. The operation is not reversible, however the image may be reloaded from
wherever it came from. Changes made to the image are not stored until the
Update Thumbnail or Export Page options are used to store the image data to
disk.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 37. Crop Dialog ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Images may be cropped to a smaller size from this dialog. If a selection
rectangle is created with the left mouse button, its coordinates will be
entered automatically, otherwise the full image size coordinates will be
displayed. The operation is not reversible, however the image may be reloaded
from wherever it came from. Changes made to the image are not stored until the
Update Thumbnail or Export Page options are used to store the image data to
disk.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 38. Define Form Dialog ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Text documents may be viewed with a form overlay. A form consists of any
monochrome image from any source. Form overlays are given a name and this name
appears in a list in the Add Document Dialog. Once a name is given, focus will
go to the Acquire New Documents Window to get a page which will become the
form. From there, set the correct option in the Document Storage Options
Dialog and store the form to disk. At a later time, the form name may be
changed from this dialog box.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 39. Select Form Dialog ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Once a form image has been acquired in the Acquire New Documents Window it may
be assigned to one of the form names previously created. If a form overlay
image already exists for that name, the new image can supersede the old.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 40. Unknown File Dialog ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
When importing files in the Acquire New Documents Window, not all files will be
images or data files known to Image Edition. When a file is encountered whose
type is not known, this dialog will be displayed. The following options will
be displayed.
Allow Registered Apps to Handle it
The file will be stored in the archive and when it is viewed, the
application which created it will be launched to view it. This mechanism
will only work if the app has registered a file extension (e.g. .DOC) with
the Workplace Shell. Most Windows applications which create documents do
this automatically when they are installed.
It is a Flat ASCII File
The file is assumed to contain ASCII data with simple formatting done with
standard control charact ers such as CR, LF, FF, BS, etc.
It is a Flat EBCDIC File
Some IBM computers create text files which use the EBCDIC character set.
This option assumes the file is just text and has simple formatting done
with standard control characters.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 41. Scan / Import Options Dialog ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
tsize=3 break=all.
Insert documents at selection point When checked, this option will cause new
pages to be inserted in front of the currently selected page (first
page outlined in blue). After each import or scan operation, this
option will be automatically un-checked.
Re-arrange pages in duplexed order When checked, this option will cause the
Store button (for saving to a file or document) to save the selected
pages in duplexed order. When working with a stack of two-sided
pages, it is typical practice to load the stack into the scanner to
scan one side, then flip the stack over and scan the other side of
each page. After doing this, the pages will be scanned in the
following order: 1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 6, 4, 2. This option will re-arrange
the pages in the output document to be in the correct order. After
the store operation, this option will be automatically un-checked.
Auto-Rotate Scanned Pages When checked, this option will cause each page gotten
from the scanner to be rotated by 90 degrees. This is useful for
large format scanners which can scan pages in landscape orientation
for greater speed.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 42. Document Storage Options Dialog ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Store Page Range as a Document
When checked, this option will cause the Store button to save the selected
pages to a document. Pressing the Store button will display the Add
Document Dialog.
Store Page Range as a File
When checked, this option will cause the Store button to save the selected
pages to a file instead of storing them as a document. Pressing the Store
button will display the Windows standard file selector allowing a multi-page
TIFF file to be created from the selected pages. After the store operation,
this option will be automatically un-checked.
Store Page Range as a Form
When checked, this option will cause the Store button to save the first page
in the range as a form. Pressing the Store button will display the Select
Form Dialog allowing a form name to be associated with the image file.
After the store operation, this option will be automatically un-checked.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 43. Non-Image Document Options Dialog ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Ask About All Unknown File Types
When checked, this option will cause the Unknown Document Dialog to be
displayed each time a file of unknown type is imported.
Assume Associations Are Correct
When checked, this option will cause all imported files of unknown type to
be stored as external documents. This means that when they are viewed, it
is assumed that an application is already installed which understands how to
load the document and has created an association in the WIN.INI file for
that files extension.
Assume Unknown Files Are ASCII
When checked, this option will cause all imported files of unknown type to
be stored as ASCII text. This is convenient if storing many text documents
in a row. Since flat ASCII documents have no standard header information it
is necessary to inform Image Edition ahead of time.
Assume Unknown Files Are EBCDIC
When checked, this option will cause all imported files of unknown type to
be stored as EBCDIC (IBM format) text. This is convenient if storing many
text documents in a row. Since flat EBCDIC documents have no standard header
information it is necessary to inform Image Edition ahead of time.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 44. Zoom Window ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The zoom window allows convenient zooming around an image while maintaining a
view of the entire page. When working with large scanned images on a small
display (e.g. VGA) it is sometimes necessary to zoom in to a particular area of
an image to read the text or see details in the image; the problem this causes
is that you lose the overall view of the image and must zoom out to full page
view to find your position again. The zoom window allows you to keep a
constant view of the entire image while moving freely about the entire image at
a close zoom ratio. The current viewable area in the image window will be
displayed as a blue and white square within the zoom window. This square may
be moved by pressing and holding the left mouse button; the view in the image
window will track with the movement of the mouse. The zoom window will update
its view each time an image window comes to the top of the Z-order of open
image windows.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 45. Printing ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This dialog allows you to choose which printer the document will be sent to and
how it will appear on the page. After choosing the destination printer and
page range, there are three choices for how the print will appear on the pages.
Fit To Page
When checked, this option will print the pages so that they cover as much of
the printed page as possible. If the document is smaller than the printer
page, it will be enlarged to fit. If the document is larger than the
printer page, it will be shrunk to fit.
Actual Size
When checked, this option will print the pages so that they appear the same
size on paper as the original image was captured. This option relies on
correct resolution information in the document to correctly scale it. For
example, if a 300 dpi scan of a 4x5 inch picture is printed on a 200 dpi
printer, the image will be shrunk so that it covers 4x5 inches of paper on
the printer even though the printer resolution is less than that of the
image.
One To One
When checked, this option will print the pages so one document pixel becomes
one printer pixel. This is useful for printing images that have been
color-reduced by dithering; it will prevent the image from being scaled.
Scaling an image that has been dithered can produce unwanted patterns in the
output. It is up to the user to insure that the resolution of the document
and printer are compatible. If a 300 dpi image is printed on a 200 dpi
printer, it will appear too large.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 46. Help for Folder View Window... ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This window displays the folders of the currently selected file cabinet.
Clicking on a folder with the left mouse button will select it as the current
folder (the currently selected folder has its name highlighted with white on
black lettering). Double- clicking the left mouse button on a folder name will
select it as the current folder, and open the Document Access Window; pressing
the Open button has the same effect. When there are more folders than can fit
in the window, a scroll bar will appear on the right side of the window to
allow access to the rest of them. New Folder
Clicking this button will open the New Folder Dialog and allow you to create
folders within the currently selected file cabinet. Find Folder

with the left mouse button will select it as the current (the currently
selected file cabinet has its name highlighted with white on black lettering).
Double-clicking the left mouse button on a file cabinet name will select it as
the current, and open the Folder View Window. When there are more file cabinets
than can fit in the window, a scroll bar will appear on the right side of the
window to allow access to the rest of them.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 48. Help for Regenerate Index Password ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This dialog is a precaution to prevent accidental or unwanted regeneration of
the database index files. Since this operation, if used incorrectly, can cause
a loss of data, you must call TDF technologies for the password before
continuing.
Regenerate Index This function is for regenerating index files that have been
accidently deleted or lost. All or some of the index files may be restored at
one time.
Repair Index This function is for repairing an index file which has been
corrupted, but is still readable. If a certain file cabinet is causing errors
when trying to add documents to it, it is possible that the file has become
corrupted. When this function is invoked, it will ask for a .DB file to read.
All of the records will be read from this file and placed in a new DB file
named *.NEW (* means the original name). Once complete, save the original *.DB
file and rename the *.NEW file to *.DB.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 49. Help for Field Edit Dialog... ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This dialog allows the user to create a list of choices for the more important
fields of the Add Document. The document name, description, author, and
keywords fields can have up to 64 pre-defined choices to speed creating
documents with similar information.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 50. Help for Selecting a Directory... ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use this option to choose the source or destination directory for converting
images from one format to another. Double-click in the list of directories to
change to that directory. Click OK when the desired drive and directory are
displayed at the top of the dialog.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 51. Help for Batch Convert... ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use this option to convert a directory full of image files from one format to
another. Any valid image files in the source directory will be converted from
any source format to a specified destination format. Any of the image
manipulation options of Image Edition such as rotation can be performed on the
images during conversion. An option exists to delete the source image files
after successful conversion. Multipage source files will be converted into
multipage destination files as long as the destination format is either TIFF,
IOCA, or DCX.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 52. Help for Text View Windows... ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
When viewing text (COLD) documents, there are various options available. Text
may be copied to the clipboard by selecting it with the mouse and either
hitting CTRL-INSERT or using the Copy option under the Edit menu. If no text is
selected, the entire page will be copied. Also, under the system menu (menu
opened from the upper left corner of the window), there are two new choices
available:
Search Text To find a specific word or phrase in the document, choose this
option.
Find Next Use this option to repeat a search and find the next occurance in the
document. This function can also be activated by pressing the F5 key.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 53. Help for Image View Windows... ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
When viewing images in Image Edition, various controls are available in the
window for nagivating around the image and zooming.
Keyboard Usage Arrow Keys - Pan around the image in all four directions. PgUp
PgDn - Move forward or backward by a whole screenful; if at the top or bottom
of the image will go to the next (previous) page. +/- - Change the zoom level
by 10%.
Mouse Usage Pressing and holding the left mouse button over the image allows a
selection rectangle to be created. Once a region is selected, it can be copied
to the clipboard by selecting Copy under the Edit menu, or the view can be
zoomed into this region by clicking on the right mouse button. The right
button also serves to toggle the view between 100% zoom and the default view
setting.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 54. Help for Coach... ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The coach feature is a collection of short animated sequences which demonstrate
how to use various functions of Image Edition. It was necessary to store the
coach files on a separate CD because they are quite large. Each coach file is
recording of a voice commentary accompanying with screen shots of activities
done with Image Edition. The coach files may also be run by pressing the F2
key. When the F2 key is pressed, a coach file specific to the current window
will be run.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 55. How To Use The Mouse ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Image Edition makes use of both mouse buttons to perform all of its operations.
The left mouse button activates all normal controls buttons and menus. The
right mouse button is used to display a menu of options when used with various
document windows and performs other functions in image display windows. Image
display windows use the mouse in a more complex manner. When a document window
is open for view, the following actions may be performed.
1. To select an area of the screen for copying to the clipboard or zooming,
press and hold the left mouse button while moving the mouse to form an
outline rectangle around the area of interest. Release the left mouse
button. To copy this area to the clipboard, select Copy from the Edit Menu
or press the copy icon on the Toolbar.
2. When a selection rectangle is present, pressing the right mouse button will
zoom the display so that the selected area fills the view. If no selection
rectangle is present, pressing the right mouse button will zoom in to 100%
view at the selected spot, or zoom back out to the default view if
previously at 100%.
3. To change the position of the current view, use the horizontal and vertical
scroll bars. An alternative to the scroll bars is to double-click with the
left mouse button in the viewing area. The mouse pointer will change into
the form of a hand. In this mode, all mouse movement will directly move
the current view. Pressing the left mouse button will release the display
and the mouse will function normally again.

Pressing these keys will change the current view scale by +/- 10%.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 57. Selecting a window ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
When there are more than 10 document windows open at once, this dialog is
displayed to allow choosing a window which is not listed in the Window
directory. To selected a window, make a choice in the list by double-clicking
on the document name or by clicking the OK button.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 58. General Overview ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Imaged Edition is a document imaging application which allows the scanning,
viewing, and indexing of bitmap images, text files, and any other external
document created on your computer. Image Edition supports a large variety of
scanners through the TWAIN interface and supports a wide range of image file
formats. Image sizes supported are up to 32K by 32K pixels. Because of the
efficient memory management used in Image Edition, even extremely large images
will not require much system memory. Because of its low memory requirements,
Image Edition has been tested on systems with 4MB of memory. The
speed-critical routines of Image Edition are written in highly optimized
assembly language; this is evident by the quick responsiveness of the display
and the fast load/save times.
Image Edition supports the following file formats:
o BMP - OS/2 and Windows
o GIF
o Kodak Photo CD
o PCX, DCX
o Targa - Uncompressed and RLE
o TIFF 5.0 - All Compression types and options (except tiling)
o Fax Files - WinFAX pro, BitFAX, FAXIT, QuickLinks II
o CALS Type I
o IBM IOCA MMR, G4
o IBM PSEG3820
Help is available any time you press the F1 key from anywhere within the
program. Because this is context sensitive help, the help information that is
displayed depends on where in the program F1 was selected.
For instance, you receive help for the File pull-down on the action bar when
you highlight File and press F1. However, this is not the same help that is
displayed when you press F1 while the Open choice in the File pull-down is
highlighted.
Press Esc at any time to view the previous help window or to return to the
Image Edition window if there are no other help windows.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 66. Help for Copy ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use this icon or menu item to copy the contents of the selection rectangle to
the OS/2 Clipboard. If the clipboard had any data in it, it will be
overwritten by the new data. This menu item will only be available when a
selection rectangle exists, otherwise it will be disabled.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 67. Help for Paste ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use this icon or menu item to create a new document from the contents of the
OS/2 Clipboard. This menu item will only be available when bitmap data is
present in the clipboard, otherwise it will be grayed out. If the bitmap in the
clipboard is not monochrome, it will be converted to monochrome by OS/2's
graphics engine prior to becoming the currently open document.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 68. Help for Crop ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use the Crop menu item to reduce the size of the current page to reflect the
contents of the selection rectangle. If this operation was performed on a
multi-page document, the new document becomes just the cropped page.

image). The actual page is modified not just the view. If the page is saved,
it will be saved the way it is displayed.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 72. Help for Scale to Fax ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use this menu item to scale the current image to fit in the standard fax width
of 1728 pixels horizontally. This option is useful for images that were
scanned at a higher or lower resolution than the standard fax resolution (200
dpi). Both the horizontal and vertical directions are scaled proportionately
so as not to distort the aspect ratio of the original image. Because of the
technique Image Edition uses to scale images, very little image degradation
should be noticeable after performing this function. The actual page is
modified not just the view. If the page is saved, it will be saved the way it
is displayed.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 73. Help for Scale x2 ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use this menu item to scale the current image to twice its original size in
both the x and y directions. This option is useful for changing the target
resolution of an image. The actual page is modified not just the view. If the
page is saved, it will be saved the way it is displayed.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 74. Help for Rotate ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use this menu item to rotate the image by any angle. This option is useful for
fixing images that have been scanned upside-down (180 degrees), or sideways
(90,270 degrees). The actual page is modified not just the view. If the page
is saved, it will be saved the way it is displayed.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 75. Help for Update Thumbnail ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
When working with scanned or imported images, occasionally a page will need
modification such as rotation or color correction. To modify such a page,
double-click on the thumbnail view with the left mouse button and the page will
appear in the viewer window. Make any necessary modifications and when
complete, click on this menu item to send those changes back to the Acquire New
Documents Window.
