RELISH, Version 2.2
The Desktop Time and Information Organizer
Developed Expressly for OS/2
by Sundial Systems Corporation
A BRIEF INTRODUCTION
Relish offers time and information management that is easy to use and
totally reliable. Just make notes on who, what, when, where, and why,
and Relish will do the rest.
You'll be scheduling appointments, meetings, phone calls to make,
computer programs to run, and other things that need to be done. The
integrated telephone/address book is the place for all your important
names and numbers. Relish is perfect for everything you need to be
reminded about or keep track of.
Relish offers a flexible and intelligent approach to scheduling. You
don't have to force your commitments to fit into arbitrarily
predefined blocks of time. You decide the starting and ending times,
and any duration is fine. In fact, you don't even have to specify
times for your commitments within a day. And, they can overlap, if
necessary. It's up to you.
Of course, with Relish you will always be reminded of obligations that
require your personal attention, no matter what program you are
running at the time. The reminder function is activated as soon as
OS/2 starts, which ensures that your reminders are always displayed
when your computer is on. If OS/2 is shut down or your computer
turned off when a reminder is due, you will be alerted to it soon
after OS/2 resumes. And, if you need to, you can change the time or
place of an appointment right from the reminder.
Relish is architected to make your time management more productive.
If you want a paper copy, you can print your schedule in the format
that best suits your needs. Your To Do List is automatically
prioritized by the importance you've assigned to each item. You can
even search for free time.
With Relish, checking your schedule is just a click away. You can
quickly see a particular day, week, month, or any time period of your
choice. You can single out your phone calls, for example, or your
commitments with a particular client. The possibilities for searching
your schedule are practically endless.
And, you also have Buns - desktop objects with views of Relish
information - that give you access to information in a whole new way.
You can, for example, make copies of the Phone Book bun and
customize them into one for just your Family, another for a special
project, and maybe even one for folks who work for IBM. Then, put
these special buns where ever you want them - spread them in whatever
fashion meets your needs.
Relish is designed to blend sensibly into your OS/2 desktop. In doing
so, Relish is able to provide you with the ultimate in scheduling
flexibility and ease of use.
In a workgroup environment on a LAN, Relish Net adds the notion of
people, places, and things to your personal world of appointments,
meetings, etc. In addition to your own schedule, you have access to
the schedules of others using Relish on your LAN. You also have
access to the schedules of any places (such as conference rooms) and
things (such as VCRs and projectors) that are scheduled using Relish
Net. Relish Net even supports mobile users when they are disconnected
from the LAN. For more information on Relish Net, contact Sundial
Systems Corporation at (562) 596-5121.
THE WORKING MODEL
With the Working Model, you have the opportunity to experience Relish
first hand. Understandably, there are some restrictions. Each time
you use it, your scheduling is limited to within the next 48 hours.
Additionally, you are not allowed to print, import, or export.
Finally, because removing SOM objects from your desktop is inherently
complicated, no buns are included in this Working Model.
INSTALLING THE RELISH WORKING MODEL
To use Relish, you must install it on your hard disk. (It should
never be installed on a floppy disk.) To install it, you need at
least 2.5 megabytes of free space on your hard disk to contain the
Relish programs and files.
The installation process is quite simple and will take just a few
moments. Relish may be distributed on two disks. If so, start the
installation process from the first disk; the installation program
will ask for the second disk if necessary.
To begin the installation process, put the Relish diskette into any
disk drive. Type the drive name and install command in an OS/2
window. Thus, if you are using the B: drive, for example, type:
B:INSTALL
Alternatively, if you install from the A: drive, you can use the OS/2
drive A object on your desktop. Open the drive A icon to display all
the Relish files. Double-click on the INSTALL.EXE icon to begin the
installation process.
Note: If you received the Relish Working Model electronically and the
files are already on your hard drive, you still should install it
before use. Just follow the above instructions, but be sure to use
the correct drive and path (for example, C:\TEMP\INSTALL).
In any case, you'll be guided through the installation process by
simple instructions on your screen. After a few minutes Relish will
be up and running. Should it for any reason become necessary, you can
select Cancel or press the ESC key to stop the installation.
During installation, you must specify the disk drive and directory in
which Relish will be installed. The installation program will suggest
installing the software in C:\RELISH. Wherever you install it,
putting Relish in a separate directory is preferable - and if you
choose a directory that does not already exist, the directory will be
automatically created for you.
Also during installation, you will be asked if you want the NOW
Service Process to start automatically when OS/2 is started. This
part of Relish delivers reminders even when you are running other
programs. Unless you have a specific reason this process should not
be started, let the installation process make the necessary changes to
your STARTUP.CMD file.
When completed, the installation process puts the Relish Working
Model icon on your desktop. The program is now ready for you to use.
RELISH IS EASY TO SPREAD
Run Relish just like any other OS/2 program by selecting it with your
mouse from the icon placed on your desktop at installation.
Alternatively, you can run Relish from any OS/2 session or window by
changing to the directory with Relish, and typing:
RELISHWM
The traditional way to use Relish is through a series of "menus" and
"dialogs." Starting from the main menu across the top of the window,
each action keyword leads you to a menu of options, and each option
leads in turn to a dialog where you make choices, enter information,
or select actions to be carried out.
At the same time, you can make use of the drag-and drop capabilities
of Relish. For example, the Note Palette has icons representing the
note types. These icons can be selected directly or dragged to times
and dates for scheduling.
While some functions are not available with the Relish Working Model,
you normally can:
* Edit notes
* Add new notes
* Choose your information display options
* View a summary of notes
* Lookup particular notes by their contents
* Print your notes for a specified period of time
* Setup processing options and device connections, and get general
* Help information.
The monthly reference calendar provides access to schedule information
for any selected date. Schedule information - in the form of graphs
and note summaries - offers a visual reference of commitments. The
message at the bottom of the window always gives you some information
about where you are.
The Note Palette offers a visual approach to adding to or changing
your schedule. The palette window contains icons for different types
of notes. These note icons are used with the mouse by either
double-clicking or performing drag-and-drop operations. For instance,
when a note icon is dropped on a date in the reference calendar, an
Add dialog for that date is displayed.
If you find yourself in a menu or dialog that you do not want to
complete, you have several ways to cancel your current activity. No
matter where you are, pressing the ESC key will always cancel the
current dialog or menu. In addition, most dialogs contain a Cancel
pushbutton.
Help in the menu bar will give you information on a host of topics.
To get specialized help information for a highlighted field, button,
or menu item, press the F1 key or select the Help pushbutton in the
dialog. This information generally summarizes the ways a button can
be used or the types of information that should be entered in a field.
Another kind of help is available when you are entering times and
dates. You can see the assumptions Relish is making about your entry
by first selecting Show Analysis under the Format option of the Choose
menu. This will allow Relish to display a keystroke- by-keystroke
interpretation of your time and date entries.
EXPLORING RELISH
One of Relish's primary goals is to provide you with a flexible and
comprehensive approach to scheduling. Ideally, scheduling should not
be a disruptive or cumbersome process, but rather a natural extension
of what you are doing. With Relish, there isn't any one right way to
do something, but this example will give you some ideas.
Let's say it's mid-morning and you're meeting a friend for lunch.
Move your mouse to the Meeting icon (2nd from left in the Note
Palette):
Hold down the right mouse button to select the icon.
Drag the icon to 12 PM on the time graph and release the mouse
button.
You've just dropped the icon on 12 PM - which results in an Add
Meeting dialog for noon today. You'll want to enter the details here.
The cursor is in the With Whom field:
Enter a name and press TAB to move the cursor to the next field.
For location, enter the name of your favorite cafe and TAB to
Remarks. If you feel like it, type "lunch."
Since the starting time is already completed, TAB twice to End
Time.
Type "130" and TAB.
To make sure you'll be there on time, set an alarm for "1130."
Select the OK button.
That's it; the meeting is scheduled. (If it's already later than
11:30, you will get a warning when you try to OK - and you will get an
immediate reminder if you continue.)
But let's suppose you change the plan - the lunch should be for
tomorrow. With the mouse anywhere on the summary line for the
meeting:
Hold down the right mouse button and drag the summary to tomorrow's
date in the reference calendar in the upper right of the Relish
window.
Release the mouse button.
And - just like that - the meeting is rescheduled to noon tomorrow.
The End Time and Alarm are automatically adjusted accordingly.
Now let's try something else. Minimize Relish. The small monthly
calendar remains on your desktop for reference. Click on tomorrow's
date with your mouse, and you'll see your schedule for tomorrow. Not
only that, the "Add" button provides the opportunity to schedule more
commitments, right then and there, even for other days. Or, if you
double-click on the summary line of your meeting, the details will be
displayed, ready for any changes you choose to make.
Tomorrow you'll be reminded of the appointment you scheduled,
whether you have Relish running or not. That doesn't mean
whether Relish is in a window or as an icon - it can be "closed" and
you'll still get your reminders.
When the reminder is displayed, you can revise the note if you need to
reschedule, defer the reminder to a later time, snooze all reminders
if you don't want to be interrupted by anything right now, or even
erase the note from your schedule - all without ever returning to the
program.
Take a few minutes to explore the options and try more of Relish's
features. Perhaps you'd like Relish to use a 24 hour clock. Or,
maybe you'd like the ending (as well as the starting) time of your
commitments to be included in the summarized listing. Or, you might
like to change the office hours that define the limits of the
graphical view of your day. The Format option on the Choose menu
offers you these and other alternatives to customize the program.
Perhaps you'd like to change the colors and fonts used by Relish.
Open the OS/2 Color or Font palette and just drag your choice (with
the right mouse button) to the area of the Relish window you want to
change. To change the color of text, rather than the background,
follow the OS/2 convention and hold down the CTRL key when you drop.
WHEN YOU ARE DONE
Relish stores information dynamically as you enter it. Thus, you
don't need to take special action at the end of the day - you can
shut-down your computer without harming Relish or your schedule. Even
if you close the Relish window, you'll still get reminders until you
shut down OS/2. And (if you let the NOW Service Process be enabled
when you installed), you'll get your reminders automatically after you
start up OS/2 again.
The need may arise to remove the working model from your system.
Since Relish is always working whenever OS/2 is running, you might not
be able to delete all the programs and files. Therefore, before
deleting any files, run the STOPNOW program in the Relish directory to
shut down these background operations.
LAST, BUT NOT LEAST
Intuitive, reliable, convenient, and time-saving: Relish gives you
access to information like you've always wanted. Now it's easy to
take control of your calendar. Relish comes fully documented with
explanations and hints about its host of time-saving features and
functions. And, when you install the complete product, all of the
notes you've entered in this Working Model are automatically
preserved.
