  4. PM Scrapbook is an OS/2 2.x 32 bit application for the storage and organization 
  5. of data, notes and personal information. The organization of this information 
  6. is stored and graphically displayed in a heirarchical "tree" format. Each piece 
  7. of information consists of a an entry in the tree window, it's title and 
  8. detail. 
  9.  
  10. PM Scrapbook contains a text editor for textual data as well as specialized 
  11. editors for the internal data types. PM Scrapbook also keeps track of the dates 
  12. associated with these entries for occasional house cleaning.

  14. PM Scrapbook uses the following data formats/types:

  47. Directories and files and the OS/2 workplace shell are nice for organizing your 
  48. stuff. However, it's easy to end up with a cluttered hard disk as well as a 
  49. desk covered with scraps of paper containing phone numbers, notes and 
  50. reminders. 
  51.  
  52. PM Scrapbook provides a means of storing files and information in one file 
  53. while still preserving the directory - or tree - concept. This makes exchanging 
  54. organized materials easy. These files are refered to as 'Scrapbooks'. 
  55.  
  56. Trees and directories are very similar. Every scrapbook has a tree window. This 
  57. window is a graphical representation of the information in the scrapbook. Each 
  58. icon (little picture) on the tree represents an entry in the scrapbook. The 
  59. tree window can be thought of as the table of contents of the scrapbook. This 
  60. window also allows you to arrange the structure of the entries within the file.

  63. Each PM Scrapbook entry has a data type and an editor associated with it. The 
  64. editors vary depending on the data type, but they all have certain things in 
  65. common. The term "entries" will also crop up in terms of the editors as well as 
  66. the Tree window. For example, in the Tree window you may have a To-Do List 
  67. entry. When you open the editor for that Tree entry, it may contain an number 
  68. of things "to do". Each of those things will also be refered to as entries.

  70. Working with Scrapbooks 
  71.  
  72. In addition to double clicking in the program icon, PM Scrapbook may be started 
  73. by double clicking with the mouse or pressing the enter key on any file with an 
  74. SCB extension or dragging and dropping the file onto the PM Scrapbook program 
  75. icon. You may also specify a scrapbook file in the parameters field in the 
  76. Settings for the program icon. This will cause PM Scrapbook to open that file 
  77. on start up.

  79. PM Scrapbook is designed so that future data types and editors can be added or 
  80. enhanced without disturbing any files you have already created.

  87. Registeration for PM Scrapbook is $35 U.S. per copy. Site licenses can be 
  88. negotiated on  request. Registered users will receive a key that disables 
  89. initial 'hello' window as well as information about other Coolware products.

  136. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5. Removing PM Scrapbook From Your System ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

  138.    1. Run PMScrpBk.exe from an OS/2 command window with "remove_pmsb_now" 
  139.       (without the quotes) as a parameter. This will remove the references to 
  140.       PM Scrapbook from your OS/2 INI file. 
  141.  
  142.    2. Delete all PMScrpBk.* from your hard drive. 
  143.  
  144.    3. Delete all *.scb files from your hard drive. 
  145.  
  146.  Note that you may perform only 'Step1' if you want to 'reset' PM Scrapbook to 
  147.  it's default settings.

  150. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 6. A note to current PM Scrapbook Users ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

  152. Every effort has been made in this release of PM Scrapbook to insure that all 
  153. scrapbooks created in previous versions are still compatable. If you have 
  154. trouble loading an earlier version of a scrapbook, please forward the file to 
  155. Coolware and every effort will be made to correct the problem. All data within 
  156. the file will be held in the strictest of confidence.

  158. You may notice that the 'List' entry type is no longer supplied. List entries 
  159. are automatically converted to MiniBases when the file is loaded. Loading a 
  160. scrapbook containing a List entry immediately flags the scrapbook as modified. 
  161. You should save the file to disk to convert the scrapbbok to the latest format. 
  162. You will not lose data if you don't.

  253.  
  254. The "Tree" window is a graphical display of the contents of the scrapbook. It 
  255. is here that entries are added to, deleted from, rearranged in, and editors are 
  256. started in the scrapbook. These functions can be initiated from the action bar 
  257. (menu), accelarator keys or by clicking the right mouse button to use a 
  258. "pop-up" version of the action bar. Entries may also be added by menu item 
  259. selection or by dragging in OS/2 desktop objects or other scrapbook entries. 
  260.  
  261. The tree window is also used to organize the contents of the scrapbook. A plus 
  262. or minus sign next to an entry means that there are additional 'child' entries 
  263. that may be expanded or suppresed by clicking on the plus or minus sign. 
  264.  
  265. The names of these entries are updated by holding down the "Alt" key on the 
  266. keyboard and clicking the left mouse button over the entry title or selecting 
  267. "Title" from the edit menu. 
  268.  
  269. When using the direct editing method, an entry field will appear in which you 
  270. may type. When you are finished typing, click the left mouse button outside of 
  271. the entry field. 
  272.  
  273. The layout or order of the entries can be changed by direct manipulation 
  274. (drag-drop) or through the 'Cut', 'Copy', 'Paste' and 'Paste after' choices 
  275. from the edit menu. Note that you can not cut or copy an entry that is open or 
  276. has one that has open children. 
  277.  
  278. Direct Manipulation 
  279.  
  280. You can move and copy entries within or across scrapbooks with the mouse. For 
  281. the most part, the direct manipulation rules are the same as those of the OS/2 
  282. workplace shell. Note that you can not drag and drop an entry that is open or 
  283. one that has open 'children'. 
  284.  
  285. Place the mouse pointer over an entry, hold down the 'move' mouse button 
  286. (usually the right button) then move the mouse pointer either within the 
  287. current tree window or to another tree window for another scrapbook. When moved 
  288. over an entry, the icon for that entry will be drawn with a box around it. If 
  289. you let go of the mouse button, the originally selected entry and all of it's 
  290. children will be moved to the first child position of the target entry. 
  291.  
  292. If you hold down the Shift key while performing this operation the originally 
  293. selected entry and all of it's children will be moved to the position directly 
  294. beneath the target entry - the next sibling. 
  295.  
  296. Holding the Ctrl key in conjunction with either of the previous two operations 
  297. causes the originally selected entry to be copied, instead of moved, to the new 
  298. position. 
  299.  
  300. You can drag any OS/2 object into a scrapbook. If 'Drops are references' is 
  301. checked on the Tree page of the settings notebook, all drops create reference 
  302. entries. A Reference entry is created whenever the Ctrl and Shift keys are 
  303. pressed during a drag/drop operation. 
  304.  
  305. If the 'Drops are references' option is not checked and the Shift key is not 
  306. used in conjunction with the Ctrl key and the source object is identified as 
  307. 'Plain Text' a Text entry is created and populated with the contents of the 
  308. source file. 
  309.  
  310. If you have 'DragText' installed on your computer, you can create Text entries 
  311. by dragging text from other applications into the Tree window. This option is 
  312. ideal for grabbing bits and pieces of information from e-mail, text files, etc. 
  313.  
  314. PM Scrapbook never deletes drag/dropped objects from your hard disk.

  317. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 9. PM Scrapbook Editors ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
  318.  
  319. PM Scrapbook contains individualized editors for each of it's information 
  320. types. The appropriate editor is automatically invoked for the slected entry in 
  321. the tree window when the Enter key is pressed, the entry is double-clicked upon 
  322. or Edit is selected from the edit menu. 
  323.  
  324. Certain functionality is common across all of the editors: 
  325.  
  326.      Changing of entry title. 
  327.  
  328.      Selection of the font and colors for that instance of the editor. 
  329.  
  330.      Window size and position stored with the data. 
  331.  
  332.      Searching and printing. 
  333.  
  334.      Menu choices to save the entire scrapbook and to jump to the tree window. 
  335.  
  336.      Clipboard support. 
  337.  
  338.  The following pertains to all editors except the text editor: 
  339.  
  340.  All editors use the OS/2 method of text entry: Hold down the Alt key on the 
  341.  keyboard and click the left mouse button over the text area to be changed or 
  342.  added. Keyboard shortcuts are also provided for mouse-free operation. 
  343.  
  344.  All editors support direct manipulation (drag and drop) for changing the order 
  345.  of the records within an entry. None of the editors support drag and drop to 
  346.  another editor instance.

  359. A "Text" entry consists of free-form textual information. Text entries may be 
  360. added to the scrapbook by: 
  361.  
  362.      Selecting "Text" or "From clipboard" from the tree window Create menu. 
  363.      Selecting "Paste" or "Paste after" from the tree window Edit menu. 
  364.      'Dragging' in a text entry from another PM Scrapbook tree window. 
  365.      'Dragging' in a file from a folder on the desktop. 
  366.  
  367.  Within the editor, information can be entered manually and imported from a 
  368.  file or the clipboard. 
  369.  
  370.  At first glance, the text entries might seem pretty uninteresting. They are, 
  371.  however, one of PM Scrapbook's strongest points. They are perfect for: 
  372.  
  373.      Organizing scattered files and notes by logical topics. 
  374.      Storing e-mail threads. 
  375.      Consolidating 'ReadMe' files and config.sys and autoexec.bat backups. 
  376.      Creating your own references with a heirarchical organization. 
  377.  
  378.  Please note that you can import or drag-in any file type into a scrapbook. 
  379.  However, anything besides plain text files will be unusable. PM Scrapbook 
  380.  never deletes drag/dropped files from your hard disk.

  383. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 11. Address Book editor ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
  384.  
  385. An "Address Book" entry consists of any number of individual record entries. 
  386. Address Book entries may be added to the scrapbook by: 
  387.  
  388.      Selecting "Address book" from the tree window Create menu. 
  389.      Selecting "Paste" or "Paste after" from the tree window Edit menu. 
  390.      'Dragging' in an entry from another PM Scrapbook tree window. 
  391.  
  392.  Each entry in the Address book consists of the following fields: 
  393.  
  394.  Name                There is only one name field. That is, there are not 
  395.                      seperate fields for first and last names. Since this field 
  396.                      can be used for sorting, you should enter the names in the 
  397.                      order you wish to sort: Last name, First name or First 
  398.                      name Last name. 
  399.  
  400.  Area Code           The area or country code of the phone number. 
  401.  
  402.  Phone Number        The phone number. 
  403.  
  404.  Extension           The extension. 
  405.  
  406.  Address             The address. 
  407.  
  408.  Notes               Space for any additional information about the person or 
  409.                      business. 
  410.  
  411.  Date                The date this entry was created or last updated. 
  412.  
  413.  The information in these fields are updated by holding down the "Alt" key on 
  414.  the keyboard and clicking the left mouse button over the field to be updated. 
  415.  An entry field will appear in which you may type. When you are finished 
  416.  typing, click the left mouse button outside of the entry field. You may also 
  417.  use the "Begin edit", "Next edit", "Previous edit" and "End edit" functions 
  418.  from the Edit menu to update the entries. Once the edit sequence has been 
  419.  started you can use the Tab key to move to the next column. 
  420.  
  421.  Note that none of the fields are mandatory and no validations are performed on 
  422.  their contents. 
  423.  
  424.  The address book editor is divided into 2 halves. The left half consists of 
  425.  the "Name" through "Phone Number" fields with the remaining fields, starting 
  426.  at extension, in the right half. 
  427.  
  428.  To move the split point, position the mouse pointer over the split bar. When 
  429.  the pointer changes from the arrow-pointer, hold down either mouse button and 
  430.  slide the split bar to the desired position. 
  431.  
  432.  You may suppress columns from the display if they are not applicable to the 
  433.  current address book. Note that this suppression applies only to the current 
  434.  entry. It does not apply to any other address books in the current scrapbook 
  435.  or any other scrapbook.

  438. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 12. To-Do List editor ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
  439.  
  440. A "To-Do List" entry consists of any number of individual record entries. To-Do 
  441. List entries may be added to the scrapbook by: 
  442.  
  443.      Selecting "To-Do list" from the tree window Create menu. 
  444.      Selecting "Paste" or "Paste after" from the tree window Edit menu. 
  445.      'Dragging' in an entry from another PM Scrapbook tree window. 
  446.  
  447.  Each entry in the To-Do list consists of the following fields: 
  448.  
  449.  Entry date     This is the date on which you added the task entry to this 
  450.                 To-Do list. 
  451.  
  452.  Target date    This is the date on which you would like to complete the task. 
  453.  
  454.  Done date      This is the date on which this task was set as completed. 
  455.  
  456.  !              This column displays the priority ( 1 to 5 ) of the task. 
  457.  
  458.  ?              This column displays an 'X' if the task is completed or a blank 
  459.                 if it is not. if it is not. 
  460.  
  461.  Task           This column describes the task "to do". 
  462.  
  463.  The task description is entered and updated by holding down the "Alt" key on 
  464.  the keyboard and clicking the left mouse button over the task description 
  465.  field or pressing Ctrl-T on the keyboard. An entry field will appear in which 
  466.  you may type. When you are finished typing, click the left mouse button 
  467.  outside of the entry field. You may also use the "Task" choice from the Edit 
  468.  menu. 
  469.  
  470.  The date fields are updated by invoking the appropriate date edit from the 
  471.  "Edit" menu. The "Done date" and "Entry date" are automaticlly updated for 
  472.  you, but you may over-ride them with the date editors. 
  473.  
  474.  A task is marked as "done" by double clicking over the appropriate entry or 
  475.  pressing the "enter" key on the keyboard when the desired entry is 
  476.  highlighted. 
  477.  
  478.  The to-do list editor is divided into 2 halves. The left half consists of the 
  479.  date fields and the right half of the priority, check and task description 
  480.  fields. 
  481.  
  482.  To move the split point, position the mouse pointer over the split bar. When 
  483.  the pointer changes from the arrow-pointer, hold down either mouse button and 
  484.  slide the split bar to the desired position.

  486.  The entires in a to-do list can be sorted by any of the fields.

  488.  You may suppress columns from the display if they are not applicable to the 
  489.  current to-do list. Note that this suppression applies only to the current 
  490.  entry. It does not apply to any other to-do lists in the current scrapbook or 
  491.  any other scrapbook.

  496. A "MiniBase" entry consists of any number of individual record entries. 
  497.  
  498.      Selecting "MiniBase" from the tree window Create menu. 
  499.      Selecting "Paste" or "Paste after" from the tree window Edit menu. 
  500.      'Dragging' in an entry from another PM Scrapbook tree window. 
  501.  
  502.  Each entry in the list consists of up to 16 columns of data. The contents of 
  503.  these columns are entirely free form and no validation is performed by PM 
  504.  Scrapbook. The appearance of these columns is controlled by the "Settings" 
  505.  item from the MiniBase File menu. This invokes a dialog from which you specify 
  506.  the column titles, data alignment, sort options and split bar location. 
  507.  
  508.  This entry type is provided as a generic, everything-else editor. For example, 
  509.  you may create a MiniBase of: 
  510.  
  511.      Inventories. 
  512.      Words and definitions for a dictionary. 
  513.      Words and their translations in another language. 
  514.      Start and end dates for residences and jobs. 
  515.      Clothing sizes. 
  516.      Questions and answers. 
  517.  
  518.  The information in these fields are updated by holding down the "Alt" key on 
  519.  the keyboard and clicking the left mouse button over the field to be updated. 
  520.  An entry field will appear in which you may type. When you are finished 
  521.  typing, click the left mouse button outside of the entry field. You may also 
  522.  use the "Begin edit", "Next edit", "Previous edit" and "End edit" functions

  532.  
  533. A "Reference" is a pointer to an OS/2 object. 
  534.  
  535. References are created through the 'Create' menu option in the Tree window or 
  536. by 'dragging' OS/2 objects into the Tree window. To add a Reference, hold down 
  537. the Ctrl or Ctrl/Shift key and drag the object to the desired location in the 
  538. Tree window. 
  539.  
  540. While bearing many similarities to an OS/2 "Shadow" object, References aren't 
  541. as smart. If, after creating a Reference in PM Scrapbook, you move or delete 
  542. the referenced object the Reference link will be lost and you must recreate the 
  543. entry.
