ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1. What is PADHD? ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
PADHD ver. 2.1 is a "scratch pad" to jot notes in and organize small files
into. While PADHD is NOT a WORD PROCESSOR It has several features to help make
managing notes a lot easier - such as cut, clear, copy, paste, search, undo,
and save to ASCII, import ASCII file, and an ASCII dump to the printer. At its
simplest it is merely a note pad. At it's most it is a great note organizer
for students, teachers, programmers ( source code files and examples ), and any
one with a lot of information to handle.
PADHD will keep up to 1000 records per data file. The record size can be set
between 1-30k per data file at creation time OR changed later to suit the users
needs. There can be an unlimited number of data files, so the amount that can
be stored is unlimited. Each data file will grow and/or shrink as you add or
delete records. Their size is not static. Find notes, source code, or any
info when you need it, then copy and paste into almost any program to use it!
You can also include up to 50 data files in global searches.
Pad can save you hours of time searching your hard drive for files and makes
it easy to organize!
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1.1. Program Requirements ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
PADHD is a 32 bit OS/2 program. Requires OS/2 4.0 (Merlin), OS/2 Warp or
OS/2 2.x. with a practical minimum of 6-8 mb of RAM memory. This does NOT mean
you need an additional 6-8 mb of memory to run PADHD. OS/2 needs that amount
of memory to run itself comfortably.
Disk space used by PADHD can be considerable. If you only use one data file,
fill it with 1000 records ( maximum number of records per data file ), and set
the fixed length record size at 30k, this would take up slightly over 30 mb of
disk space. Of course that is a HUGE amount of data and many users may not
need 30k size records. For many home users the number of records and data
files needed will usually result in a lot less space being used than the above
example. Each data file has a fixed overhead of 44k bytes. Each record has an
additional 42 bytes overhead. So for example a data file with 100 records of 5k
fixed length would use 548,200 bytes of disk space.
DATA_File_Size = (number_of_records * (fixed_length_ record_ size + 42)) +
44000

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2. Installation ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
PADHD has no installation program. It consists of six (6) files - PADHD.EXE,
PADHD.HLP, READHELP.CMD, WHATS.NEW, BMTFRM.DOC and ORDER.FRM. After you unzip
it, copy PADHD.EXE and PADHD.HLP to a utilities directory or where ever you
want them to reside. The file ORDER.FRM is an order form to register PADHD and
can be easily printed to make registering an easy and almost painless chore.
The BMTFRM.DOC is an order form to register PadhD through BMT Micro.
READHELP.CMD is an OS/2 command file to read the PadHD help file. It is
included to let the user read the help file without having to install or run
PadHD. Just double-click on the icon for READHELP.CMD and the PAHD.HLP file
will be opened to read in .INF form. It is not necessary to keep this file for
the regular operation of the PadHD program. The file WHATS.NEW is an ASCII
text file that summarizes the new features/changes.
Migrate PADHD to the desk top or use a program template to put an icon on the
desktop for it. Or you could run it from the command line to test it. Whatever
serves your purpose. The first time you run it you will be prompted to give a
name for a data file and to set the fixed length record size for that file.
After you have set that and pressed the OK button the data file will be added
to the Global Search list box. Press OK again to save the changes and start
the program. After you run it the first time it will create your data file and
two other files in the directory where it resides. PADHD.INI is an initiation
data file that holds settings and screen coordinates. PADHD.DAT is a data file
that stores the name of the data files on your search list.
You can run multiple copies of PADHD on your system. They should be located
in different directories or drives. Every copy will run off of its own INI and
DAT files.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3. Quick Start ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Getting started ...
The first time you start the program ( and after you get past the nag screen
) you will be first prompted to set the default file extention for ALL PadHD
data files. The default is .PDF. Then you will be presented with a screen to
either add or create a new data file. You are required to have at least one
data file to run the program. if you are a current user of PadHD then press
the Add button. Navigate the file system and select your current .PDF files and
add them to the list. Press OK when done.
If you are a new user or have no data files on the system then press the New
button. You'll be presented with a screen to type in the name of a data file
and to set the fixed length record size for that file. Data file names must
follow the 8.3 DOS file name convention and have the default file extension you
selected. Do not worry too much about the fixed length record size that you
choose. This can be changed later if desired. Press OK when finished. This
will add the data file name to the Global Search list. Press OK again and
PadHD will now load in and be ready to use.
When you first start the program, of course, you have no records. So the
first push button you'll use is the ADD function. alternately you could use
the Import File selection on the menu bar to directly import ANY size ASCII
directly into the current data file or use direct manipulation and DROP an
ASCII file onto the MAIN screen list box. It's probably easier to drag and
drop ASCII files directly on the main screen list box. If the files are larger
than your fixed length record size for the current data file they will be
distributed over multiple records.
If you press the ADD button you'll be presented with the Add Record window.
There you can type in the name of the note that will appear in the initial
screen's list box. Then type in the body of the note. The maximum size for a
note is listed at the top of the screen. This includes empty spaces between
words. At the bottom will be a read out of the current number of bytes you
have left in that record. Then you press Save to save the record or Cancel to
quit without saving. Most of the other controls in the ADD window are
relatively self explanatory. Read the section Add Screen for more details.
After you have several or more records in the database then try the search
function and look for a text string. Search strings can be whole words or
sentences - or parts of words or sentences. A search string must be a minimum
of 3 characters in length ( including spaces ) and no longer than 40
characters.
You may also select Set Modules from the main menu to create NEW data files.
The Set Modules screen will ALSO allow you to set which data files you want to
include in your searches. Read the section Set Modules for further details.
If you have several modules added to the global search list ( set in the Set
Modules Screen ) then you can quickly scroll through them using the small arrow
buttons at the bottom of the main screen ( below the Quit button) .
Also read the sections on : Options , Settings , or Drag and Drop
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4. Current Users of PadHD ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
To install the new version of PadHD just replace the old versions of the files
PADHD.EXE, PADHD.HLP, WHATS.NEW, and ORDERFRM.DOC with the new versions of the
same files. You should also erase your OLD PADHD.INI file. If you experience
difficulties after installation it might be necessary to erase your old
PADHD.DAT file that resides in the same directory as PADHD.EXE. If you have no
problems then this is not necessary to do.
If you erase the PADHD.INI and PADHD.DAT files then you will have to add your
data files back onto the Global Search list when you first start up the program
and reset any settings preferences you had already set in the previous version.

Global Searches
Global Searches are those searches that are initiated from the search button
on the main program window - not a search conducted while in an Edit or View
Window. When you press the search button for a Global search, you will be
presented with a dialog entry box. Select either of the two check boxes
depending on whether you want to search the Name or Text fields of the record
and whether you need the search to be case sensitive or not. The Default is to
search the Text field of the record and NOT be case sensitive. Enter a search
string in the entry field and press OK to begin. Search strings must at least
be 3 characters long.
The program will then start searching, one at a time, through every record
you have. If you have 1000 records the search may take 2-3 minutes depending on
the speed of your computer and if what you are looking for is in the last
record it looks at.
If you have more than one data module designated in your Global Search list
it will load in all of them one after the other until you cancel the search or
it reaches the end.
If it finds a match for your search string it will open that record in a
Search View Record Window and highlight the found string. You will then be
presented with several choices :

Controls on Set Modules Screen
OK : Accept and Save all changes made.
CANCEL : Cancel and do NOT accept changes.
ADD : This presents you with a file selection box. If you have several data
files - any where on the system - select them and add to the search list. A
MAXIMUM of 50 data files can be on the search list. These data files may be
located anywhere on the system - including data files of another copy of the
PADHD program located elsewhere. Navigate the system and select the data files
to include in your searches.
REMOVE : Removes data file from search list. It does NOT erase or affect the
file itself.
NEW : Create a new data file and give it a name. This is the ONLY way to
start a new data file in the program. You will be presented with a Create new
Data File screen. Give the data file a name ( 8.3 DOS convention ) with a data
file extension. Set the initial fixed length record size with the spin button.
Press OK to create the file and insert it into the Global Search list OR press
Cancel to end the operation.
ATTENTION -- DOUBLE CLICKING on any entry will put it at the top of the search
list. This will make it the current data file when you select OK and exit the
Set Modules screen. Of course, if you only have one data file in the search
list this is a moot point. All changes become effective after selecting OK -
which will save all changes and exit this screen.

SAVE ALL : This button allows you to save all the records found in an
accumulative search to an ASCII file. User selected file name and location.
STOP : Stops an accumulative search. If you are searching through some large
data files and you need or desire to abort the search this function will do
that.
QUIT : Press this button when you are finished with the search results screen.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 6.1. Options ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
OPTIONS sub-menus :
About ... : Under Options on the main menu bar. View the noxious Shareware
money grubbing beg screen.
Import File : Import any ASCII text file into the current data file.
Theoretically, this will load in any ASCII file that will fit into the number
of records you have left in the current data file. You will be presented with
a Select File box. Select an ASCII file then press OK to accept or CANCEL to
quit. If the file can NOT be loaded into one record it will be loaded into as
many records as needed - as long as there are enough records left in the data
file.
Default data module : This will let you set the default data file. The
default data file is the one that is loaded when you first start the program.
You will be presented with a drop-down list ( the data files that are in your
Global Search list ) of files to choose as your default file or you may choose
"No default". If you choose No default, then PadHD will start up with the data
file you had loaded when you last quit the program.
Resize current data file : This will let you resize, if possible, the fixed
length size of the currently loaded data file. See the following section for
important information on this topic Setting or resizing the record size of a
data file.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 6.2. Settings ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
SETTINGS sub-menus :
Prompt For Record Name : Check this if you want to be prompted for a record
name when importing ( through menu or drag + drop ) an ASCII file into the
current data file. Otherwise PadHD will name it for you using the file name of
the file as the record name.
Prompt For Print confirmation : Check this item to be prompted for confirmation
when selecting Print button in View, Edit, Search, or Add windows.
Prompt For Print All confirmation : Check this item to be prompted for
confirmation when selecting Print All button in an accumulative search result
window.
Toggle Word Wrap : This will turn the word wrap feature on or off. The title
bar of the main window will say what the current state is. With word wrap on
you won't need to use the horizontal scroll bar.
Default Open Edit Mode : Check this to make the double-click action on the
main window list box open an Edit window as a default. ( instead of a View
window )
Automatic Date-Time in new records : Check this to have the Date-Time stamp
automatically put at the beginning of ALL new records when they are created by
the Add button.
Settings for Date-Time stamp : Various settings to check for customization of
the Date-Time stamp.
Force Default Colors and Fonts : Select MAIN, EDIT, ADD, SEARCH, or VIEW in
the sub-menu to place a check mark and force the use the DEFAULT colors and
fonts for the selected window.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 6.3. Set Modules ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This will open up a screen that is used to add/remove which data modules you
want to be included in a global search OR to create a new data file. Data
files may be anywhere on the system and up to 50 data files may be added in the
Set Modules list box. See details under Misc. Topics in : Set Modules Screen
and Creating a new data data file and Adding/Removing a data file from the
search list

Misc. Topics
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 7.1. Creating a new data file ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Creating a new data file
The ONLY way to create a NEW data file is through the Set Modules menu
selection on the MAIN MENU. Select Set Modules on the MAIN screen menu bar,
then press the NEW button in the Set Modules screen when it appears. Type in a
name for a new data file, set the fixed length record size with the spin
button, and press OK. The file name MUST have the default extension and
conform to the DOS 8.3 file naming convention.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 7.2. Adding/Removing a data file from the search list ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Adding/Removing a data file from the search list
The ONLY way to add or remove a NEW data file is through the Set Modules menu
selection on the MAIN MENU screen. Select Set Modules on the MAIN screen menu
bar then press the Add button in the Set Modules screen to add an existing data
file to the search list. The Select File screen will appear and show any data
files in the current directory. You may navigate the file system if you have
data files in other directories or on other disk drives. You can ALSO drag and
drop any data files directly on to the Set Modules list box as an alternative
to using the Add button.
If you wish to remove a data file from the search list then highlight the
appropriate one and press the Remove button. This does NOT delete the actual
file. It only removes it from the search list. If you only have ONE data file
on the search list you can NOT remove it. PADHD must have at least one data
file to search through.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 7.3. Copying records to other data modules ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Copying records to other data modules
Individual records can easily be copied from one data module to another.
However, common sense and PadHD will tell you that you can not copy a record to
another module if the actual amount of the text in the record is a larger
amount of bytes than the record you want to copy it into can hold.
If you want to copy a record that has 4500 bytes to a module that has a fixed
length record size of 1k then the only way you can accomplish this is to save
the record to a file then import it into the other data file. PadHD will
distribute it in 5 records.
However, if you want to copy OR move a record into another module and it will
fit into one record of that module then you can do it easily. Highlight the
record you want to copy or move on the main screen list box, click the right
mouse button while the mouse pointer is over the list box, and then select the
desired operation from the pop-up menu - Copy or Move. You will then see the
list of data files that is in your Global Search list ( set in the Set Modules
screen ). Select the target data file. If the record will fit into the target
file then the operation will be completed. Otherwise you will get an error
message.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 7.4. Searching Records for Text ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Searching Records for Text
Pressing the Search button on the main screen activates the Search Records
screen. Type in a search word or phrase and press O.K. to begin the search.
There are four check boxes also on this screen. The default search ( with none
of these four boxes checked ) will search all modules added in the Set Modules
Screen, search the body of the record, not be case sensitive, and sequentially
open records when a match of the search string is found.
To search the Record Name field check the Search Note Name check box.
To make searches case sensitive check the Case Sensitive check box.
To search ONLY the current module check the Current Module Only check box.
To make searches accumulative check the Accumulative Search check box.
Accumulative searches will open a Find Results Screen which fills a list with
all the records that contain your search string. This screen allows you to
view, edit, or print the matching records and allows you to interrupt the
search at any time by pressing the Stop button. See : Find Results Screen for
details
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 7.5. Drag and Drop ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Main Screen Drop and Drag Support
PADHD's Main Screen uses Drag and Drop to enable the user to drag any ASCII
file object to the list box and drop it into the list. Almost any size ASCII
file can be dropped on the list. If the ASCII file is larger than the fixed
length record size it will be split into multiple records - if there are enough
records in the data file to hold it. If, for example, a 90kb text file named
TEST.DOC was dropped on the list and the fixed length record size for the
currently loaded data file is 10k then it would load the file into approx. 9
records. They would be named TEST.DOC 1, TEST.DOC 2, etc.
Individual records, in the Main Screens list box, can also be dragged off and
dropped on the desktop, file viewer, word processor, or other appropriate
program objects. If you drag a record to the desktop and drop it, the file
object will be created on the desktop with the default name of TEMP.TXT. It
will not have the same name as the record. You can change this manually in the
normal OS/2 fashion - using the settings menu for the text file object or
editing the name in place by clicking on the name while the ALT key is
depressed. NOTE : The record that is currently highlighted ( selected ) will
be the record that will be dragged off - not the record you put the cursor on
when you start the drag operation.
Drop and Drag Support for VIEW, EDIT, SEARCH, and ADD screens
While you have an edit, view, or search window open you can also initiate a
Drag and Drop operation. This is an alternative to the export to ASCII
function. Place the right mouse pointer on top of the window and drag over to
a word processor, text editor, file viewer, print object, or the Desktop.
Dropping it on the Desktop will create a copy of the whole record in a file
called "temp.txt", which can be renamed to whatever you like.
Edit windows also allow text files to be dropped directly ONTO them as a
quick alternative to using the import ASCII function. ASCII files dropped
directly onto an Edit window will be placed at the current cursor position.
Drop and Drag Support for Set Modules screen
The Set Modules screen has minimal support. Any data file may be dragged and
dropped on the Set Modules list box to add it to the list of modules to include
in searches. It is an alternative to using the Add button.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 7.6. File Association ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
File Association
File association MAY be used with data files. Many users prefer to put
shadows of the data files either directly on the Desktop or in folders so they
may double click directly on the data file and have PadHD start with the
selected file already loaded. File association is created in the usual OS/2
way. Click the right mouse button on the icon for PADHD to bring up the
settings menu. Go to the Associations page. Type *.EXT (EXT being your
default extention for data files) in the New Name field then press the Add
button. If you are running multiple copies of PadHD it is advisable to have
the associations set in ONLY ONE of them.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 7.7. Printing ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Printing
PadHD has only minimal print support at this time. It will perform a basic
dump of a record to the printer - no formatting. You can, however, drag a copy
of a record to your favorite word processor and drop it onto it. This assumes
that the word processor is aware of OS/2 drag and drop code. PadHD printing
output WILL now reflect the state of the word wrap function. If word wrap is
enabled for a screen then the printed output will have the same line breaks
that are on the screen.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 7.8. Setting or resizing the record size of a data file ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Setting or resizing the record size of a data file
Through the main screen menu choice under Options, PadHD will let you resize,
if possible, the fixed length size of the currently loaded data file. It will
first ( might take a few seconds ) analyze the records in the current data file
and see how full the fullest record is. It will then show ( on the left ) the
current size of the fixed length records and ( on the right ) have a spin
button with the allowable sizes that the file can be sized to. Spin the spin
button to see what fixed length record sizes are available. Make a choice and
press OK to start the resizing operation or Cancel to quit the process. The
process may take a while for large data files and should NOT be interrupted
after pressing the OK button.
The data files can only be sized down as low as the amount of text in the
fullest record of the module. It can only be sized up to a maximum of 30k.
If, for example, your data file has 30k fixed length records but the greatest
amount of text in any one record is only 1250 bytes then you could resize the
fixed length record size to any value between 2-30k. This would reduce,
greatly, the actual size of the data file without losing any data and be much
more efficient.
If you have a data file that has a fixed length record size of 4k and you find
that you want to be able to put larger amounts of text in the records then you
can resize the file upwards to any size from 4-30k ( in 1k increments ).
It is generally recommended that data files be backed up BEFORE a resizing
operation. Though the process seems reliable and has been tested quite a bit I
still am slightly nervous when resizing a whole data file - and I wrote the
program. I believe in being conservative in this area and recommend backing up
the data file before resizing it.
ATTENTION -- Always make sure you have plenty of disk space available before
you do a resizing operation. Conservatively, have about 3 times the size of
the current data file available as unused space on the drive where it resides.
Having a resizing operation interrupted because the system runs out of disk
space CAN BE FATAL to your data file.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 7.9. Bugs and Such ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Bugs and Such
FONTS and COLORS can be dragged and Dropped onto EDIT, VIEW, ADD, and SEARCH
box Multi Line Entry boxes. However, not all font characteristics are
supported. Italics, bold, underline, or other special characteristics may not
work. Only PRIMARY colors are supported. These limitations seem to be built
into the Multi Line Entry boxes. If there is a work around for this I can't
find it yet. Either I eventually stumble on a way to work around this ( or
I.B.M. 'fixes' this oversight ) or were stuck with this limitation. Strangely
enough, the single line entry boxes don't seem to have this limitation.
Anybody have any good suggestions?
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8. Running Multiple Instances ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Multiple Instances
You can run multiple instances of PadHD. However, since PadHD relies on it's
padhd.ini and padhd.dat files you should put a copy of PADHD.EXE ( and
PADHD.HLP if you need to use the help screens ) in several different
directories to do so. If you simply bring up the settings menu ( on a PADHD
icon ) , tab to the Window page, and change the Object open behavior to Create
new window - this WILL NOT work correctly.
Instead, create a directory. Make three sub directories under the one you
just created. Copy PADHD.EXE and PADHD.HLP into each of these sub directories.
Use the program templates to put an icon for each copy of PADHD on the Desktop.
Change the name under each icon so they say PADHD1, PADHD2, PADHD3. Now you
can run three simultaneous sessions of PADHD and all three will run off their
own .ini and .dat files.
The data files that each instance uses can be ANYWHERE on the system. They
can ALL use the SAME data files OR different ones. Use the Set Modules
selection on the main screen window to set what data files ( up to 50 ) each
instance will use.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 10. What's New! ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
What's new with PadHD
VER. 2.1 fixes and additions
1. Now PadHD will prompt you when starting it for the first time (AND if you
have NOT had any PADHD.DAT file created yet) to set the default file extention
for ALL data files. A default file extention must have a period followed by 3
characters, eg. .PDF, .ZS$, .$$$, etc. The default file extention can ALSO be
changed later by selecting "Set default file extention" under the Options menu
item on the main screen.
2. A new icon for PadHD! While not a major thing, some users have noted a
dislike for the previous icon. So .....
3. "Select All" feature added to the popup for the text area in
Edit/View/Search/Add screens. This allows highlighting of all the text in a
record with one click.
4. "Undo" added to popup for the text area in the Edit/Add screens. This is a
simple one item undo feature in case you delete or change something you change
your mind about.
5. "Save ALL records in data module to file" feature added to popup for the
main screen list box. This allows saving ALL the records to a single ASCII
file -- which then can be used for printing and other concerns.
6. "Save All" button added to accumulative search results screen. The Save
All button allows saving all the record that were found to a single ASCII file.
7. 'Number of records found' added to the titlebar of the accumulative search
results screen.
8. Popup menus for Edit/View/Search/Add screens will now activate over the rest
of the screen (not just over the entry field area) - except over controls.
Additional Notes
As always I appreciate and encourage everyone to let me know if you find any
bugs, design flaws, or just plain iritating things that you discover. Good
suggestions from users make for a better program. HINT! HINT! Please Note my
