  1. This is the readme.os2 file for MaxBase.

  3. NOTE: Please see the end of this document to 
  4. read about the license for this package.

  6. RXDbase is *not* freeware. (Though it is cheap!)

  8. A QUICK START FOR OS/2 USERS

  11. Warning - you need long file names to use this product. 
  12. (so don't use FAT, please)
  13.  
  14. Warning2 - please be sure to have a recent version of the Java 1.02
  15. runtime environment for OS/2. The latest is usually found at
  16. ftp://ftp.hursley.ibm.com/pub/java/fixes/os2/102/runtime.exe
  17. To see what version do you have currently installed, just type
  18. 'java -version' at a command prompt.
  19. Example:

  24. The above means that you have the release 1.0.2, dated 19 March 1997.
  25. Any 1.0.2 from March on should do the job.
  26.  
  27. Don't forget to read also readme.1st -- there you'll
  28. find many more explanations than here.
  29. I will cover in this document only the topics concerning
  30. integration with the WPS and the install procedure.
  31.  
  32. An extensive HTML document is also present in this package, and you
  33. should find it right on the MaxBase folder, in the "Docs" folder.

  36. WARP 4 USERS

  39. A new SmartGuide has been put in this package. Look for
  40. "SmartGuide to MaxBase" in the MaxBase folder.

  43. WHAT DOES INSTALL.CMD DO?
  44. "'"'"'"'"'"'"'"'"'"'"'"'"
  45.  
  46. Install.cmd updates (if necessary) your config.sys to
  47. let OS/2 know where to find MaxBase executables. This is
  48. necessary (and it means that you have to reboot in order to
  49. start using MaxBase, after the initial installation).
  50.  
  51. Also, the installation procedure creates some WPS objects,
  52. which are:
  53.  
  54. 0) The MaxBase folder, where all the other MaxBase-related objects
  55.    are stored.
  56. 1) The folder "Docs", where shadows to this and other
  57.    documents are stored. The originals are in the MaxBase directory.
  58. 2) A template, called "NewDb". Drag'n'drop items from here to your
  59.    preferred location in the hard drive to create a database.
  60.    To give you a start point, I have included also:
  61. 3) "db_store", which is a shadow pointing to an empty sub-directory
  62.    in the MaxBase main directory.
  63. 4) Objects "Open local DB", "Share DB on the network",
  64.    "Access a remote DB", "Get the latest Java 1.02 runtime for OS/2!"
  65.  
  66. Warning: It is possible that you receive a message like "failed to create
  67. objext XYZ..". As a rule of thumb, this is a bad sign. It means that the
  68. installer couldn't create one or more objects. However, the WPUrl object
  69. (an URL object pointing to 
  70. ftp://ftp.hursley.ibm.com/pub/java/fixes/os2/102/runtime.exe) can only be
  71. created on Warp 4 machines (and Warp 3 machines with Netscape installed?)
  72. so it is possible that this object is not created correctly. That's not
  73. a problem, just use the above URL to get the latest Java OS/2 runtime.

  76. HOW DO I USE THESE?
  77. "'"'"'"'"'"'"'"'"'"
  78.  
  79. .) To create a new database: drag'n'drop from the new db template
  80.    to a place in your hard drive. "db_store" directory is there
  81.    for your perusal, for example. Edit the "new db" title of the
  82.    newly created object (which is a folder, btw) if you like, and 
  83.    open it. Inside, you'll find an object called "rxdb.dat".
  84.    Again, rename it into something more significative if you want
  85.    and now right-click on it, then click on the arrow on the right
  86.    of the menu item "open as".
  87.    You will notice you have at least two options:
  88.  
  89.    1) Open a local db. Selecting this, the database will be opened for
  90.       local use. You will see MaxBase starting and showing the selected
  91.       database.
  92.  
  93.    2) Share db on the network. Selecting this, you will be prompted for
  94.       a port number (I tipically use 6789) and then the db manager for 
  95.       that database will be started. Users (yourself included) can access
  96.       the database by means of:
  97.  
  98. .) The object named "Access a remote DB" in the main MaxBase folder.
  99.    To use this, just double click on it and, when asked, enter the
  100.    host name and port where the server resides.
  101.    Note: due to a bug in most Java implementations, decimal (numeric)
  102.    dotted IP addresses will fail. Use alpha-numeric IP addresses
  103.    instead (eg: s2.sassuolo.pianeta.it instead of 195.32.20.193).

  108. Why should you register?
  109. Because this way you:
  110.  
  111. A) Receive (via e-mail or snail mail) the uncrippled
  112.    version of MaxBase.
  113. B) Receive for free all the updates up to version 2 for
  114.    MaxBase. [Note: bug-fixes are always seen as 1.X,
  115.    and so do most of the improvements until the program
  116.    is really different from version 1.0, and this won't
  117.    happen in 1997 anyway - I plan to release 1 major
  118.    release for year, with discounts for people who 
  119.    already have an older version].
  120. C) Help the author decide that the developing of MaxBase
  121.    is a worthy cause, so he will be encouraged to add
  122.    many enhancements to it. :-)

  126. With "program", it is intended the whole set of .class files included
  127. in this package.
  128.  
  129. If you have received this program as shareware, be warned that you
  130. have a period of 30 days to evaluate it, then you must choose:
  131.  
  132. 1) if you want to continue using this product, you must pay for it.
  133.  
  134. MaxBase can be registered via BMT-Micro - please see the end of the
  135. document.

  138.   US Dollars   29 .. for the standard edition (full local database
  139.                       + server able to receive 2 clients at once)
  140.   US Dollars   89 .. for the extended edition (full local database
  141.                       + server able to receive all the clients 
  142.                       it can handle at once)

  144. 2) if you don't like this program, or are unable to contact the author,
  145. you *must* stop using the program and you *must* uninstall it after the
  146. 30 days period.

  148. 3) If you build an application with RXDbase, a *small* one-time fee
  149. must be paid to the author (contact me for details).

  151. 4) Non profit organizations: please contact me for details; discounts
  152. are available.
