OVERVIEW
OmniFile is a flexible and graphical information manager.
It includes the functionality of a personal information manager,
contact manager, and database product all in one. Use it to
take control of your busy life. Choose from ready-to-use
preformatted modules like Contact Connection, Calendars & To Do,
Notes Filing, Meeting Planner, Electronic Librarian, Document
Tracker, Expense Reporting, and more. Or create your own
customized modules simply and easily.
OmniFile comes in four versions. Contact Connection
provides simple contact management for people who
dont need customization capabilities or total
information management. OmniFile Home is for use
at home and provides contact management, calendars,
and several other useful modules. Users can customize
virtually any screen or create entirely new modules.
OmniFile Pro contains all the features of the Home
version and more. It is for use by business professionals
and includes several modules aimed at managing your business
activities. OmniFile Office is a multi-user version
of Omnifile Pro. It comes with licenses for 5 users and
additional licenses can be purchased.
All versions are available for both OS/2 and Windows 95 and
will soon be available for Windows NT also. The Office
version of OmniFile allows data to be shared between users
of any of these operating systems.
Any of these versions can be tried or purchased by selecting
the 'Unlock Modules' option on the main menu.
The demonstration versions of these products are full
working copies of the program except that they only allow
the user to enter about 50 records across all modules and
some exporting features are disabled.
INSTALLATION for OS/2
Note: If you are upgrading from a previous version, follow
the instructions found in the 'upgrade.txt' file instead.
If the file and the corresponding upgrade program was not
included, contact Computer Interface for instructions on how
to acquire it.
If you have downloaded this program from an online source and you
have not already unzipped the file, then you should use PKUNZIP with
the -d option to unzip the program (i.e. "PKUNZIP OMNIFILE.ZIP -d").
After this you should run the install procedure by running the INSTALL.CMD
command file.
If you have received this program on floppy disks, then type "A:INSTALL"
at an OS/2 Command Prompt to install the program.
The INSTALL program uses REXX which is usually installed
as part of the OS/2 installation process. If you do not
have REXX installed on your computer, you must manually
install the program. To do so, either manually execute
the commands found in INSTALL.CMD or call Computer
Interface Corporation for help.
Each time you start the program you will be prompted to enter
your user id. This allows the program to keep track of certain
information based on the current user. If you do not want to
be asked for your user id, simply edit your config.sys file
and add a line that says "SET USER_ID=name" where name
is the name you want to use (without spaces). Be sure to
save the config.sys as text only. You will need to reboot in
order for this change to take effect.
INSTALLATION for Windows 95
Note: If you are upgrading from a previous version, follow
the instructions found in the 'upgrade.txt' file instead.
If the file and the corresponding upgrade program was not
included, contact Computer Interface for instructions on how
to acquire it.
If you have downloaded this program from an online source and you
have not already unzipped the file, then you should use PKUNZIP with
the -d option to unzip the program (i.e. "PKUNZIP OMNIFILE.ZIP -d").
If you are upgrading from a floppy disk:
Insert the disk labeled Installation Disk into your
floppy drive.
Open the Control Panel located in the My Computer folder.
Select Add/Remove programs.
Click on the install button and follow the instructions.
If you are upgrading from a downloaded file:
Open the Control Panel located in the My Computer folder.
Select Add/Remove programs.
Click on the install button.
Enter the path to the setup program (i.e. "\TEMP\setup.exe")
or find the setup.exe file in the TEMP folder using Explorer
and double-click on the file to run it.
After the installation is finished, the program can be started
from the taskbar by clicking on Start, selecting Programs,
and choosing Omnifile from the list.
Each time you start the program you will be prompted to enter
your user id. This allows the program to keep track of certain
information based on the current user. If you do not want to
be asked for your user id, simply edit your autoexec.bat file
and add a line that says "SET USER_ID=name" where name
is the name you want to use (without spaces). Be sure to
save the autoexec.bat as text only. You will need to reboot in
order for this change to take effect.
UNINSTALLING OMNIFILE for Windows 95
To successfully uninstall Omnifile, run the cleanup.bat file
located in the Omnifile program directory before running the
windows uninstall procedure from the control panel.
WARNING: The cleanup.bat file will delete all database files
created by Omnifile.
The windows deinstall procedure is accessed by opening the
Control Panel and selecting Add/Remove programs.
Then select Omnifile from the list and click on the
Add/Remove button.
NOTES
All versions of Omnifile except Contact Connection have an
option to warn you about upcoming events. This option is
normally turned on. If you are performing a task which will
tie up your computer for a long time (like importing or exporting
data) you may want to turn this option off so it doesn't interfere.
To do so select Show Reminders from the Jump List menu and click
on the 'Show Reminders' checkbox to turn it off. For more
information see 'Calendars Module' in the online help.
