  1.                 Welcome to Names/2 and WinNames Version 4.0.

  4. Redistribution is permitted as long as no fees (other than legitimate
  5. handling costs-disks, postage,etc..) are charged. Also please do not
  6.      omit any of the included files-(Docs, Utilities, DLL's).

  9.    *         Both are herein refered to as "Names/2".            *

  11. *ALL* tasks, visuals, & dataformats are compatible (the same) across the
  12. windows and OS/2 environments, as long as you are using the same version
  13. of the program.
  14. -----------------------------------------------------------------
  15. -You will need RLZRUN20.RTS and CABLE.DLL ver's 2.0b for your operating
  16. environment/system. Available on Shakedown Street/2 (413-586-2840) and
  17. other fine bbs's. The Windows and OS/2 Dll's are named exactly the same,
  18. but are very different. The current OS/2 Version of RLZRUN20.RTS is 731,
  19. 366 bytes in size, whereas the same-named Windows version is 547,536
  20. bytes (the OS/2 DLL's are larger).

  22. OS/2 DLL files should go in a directory entitled:   \OS2\RLZRUN20
  23.                                            (cable.dll to OS2\DLL)
  24. Windows DLL files should go in:                     \WINDOWS
  25. These are the default places the respective programs will expect to find
  26. the dll's.
  27. These files ARE included w/this archive...

  29. -Note: Names/2 2.0 and 2.2 aren't compatible with version 4.0. Rest assured
  30. however, that further developments to Names/2 SHOULD be compatible with this
  31. current version's data format. If it is not, i will also include a small
  32. "updater" that will read your current datafile and create a new one in the
  33. current format.

  35. * A utility is included with this archive for Version 2.x users
  36.   (see Two2Four.Txt) that will update your datafile to the current level.
  37.  
  38. -Using: There are currently 10 fields that you can use to store information
  39. on/about a person or company. Max datalength of each field is as follows:
  40.         Name                   (35 characters)
  41.         3 Phone number fields  (20 ")
  42.         Street                 (35 ")
  43.         City                   (35 ")
  44.         State                  (9 ")
  45.         Zip                    (11 ")
  46.         Comment line 1         (77 ")
  47.         Comment line 2         (77 ")
  48. All fields can be a mixture of numbers and characters.
  49.  
  50. All buttons require only ONE click. Their associated
  51. functions can also be invoked by holding down the ALT key and pressing
  52. the UNDERLINED letter of the text in the buttons. IE: To "Search" Hold
  53. down the ALT key, and press "s". OR, click it with your mouse.

  55. Below, each button is described:
  56.  
  57. "Add New"; To Add a new entry to you database, click
  58.         this button. When all fields are visibly redrawn (blank), click
  59.         inside the field you want to edit, and start typing. You can then
  60.         move to the next field by clicking inside of each one, or using
  61.         your tab key to move through each one at a time. "Field"'s are
  62.         the white boxes on your screen where you enter/read data.
  63. "Save"; You must press or click this button after you have entered all
  64.         of the data you wish to when adding a new entry to the database.
  65.         **You can change any entry displayed on your screen at any
  66.         time by clicking inside the field you wish to change, and just
  67.         typing in your changes. HOWEVER, they are not saved until you hit
  68.         the "Save" button. ** Your Main window will disappear temporarily
  69.         and then rebuild itself as the screen is updated (all saved data
  70.         is stored as uppercase, among other changes that take place when
  71.         you save something).
  72. "Search"; Click this button to perform a
  73.         wordsearch (or even partial word search) on all the "Name" fields
  74.         in your database. If a match is found in the search, your screen
  75.         will be updated accordingly. "Name" field is the upper-leftmost
  76.         white box on your main window. Even if you change its label to be
  77.         company or whatever. At current, this is the only "field" searched.
  78. "Delete"; This will erase the currently displayed datafile entry from disk
  79.         permanently.
  80. "Previous"; Clicking this button will move to the immediate previous entry in
  81.         your datafile (It "backs up" a record). If you are at the beginning
  82.         of your file already (as is the case when you first open the program)
  83.         and you hit this button, a pop-up message will let you know this,
  84.         and no action will be taken.
  85. "Next"; Will move one record FORWARD in your user file. If you are at the end
  86.         of your database already, a popup message will notify you and no
  87.         action will be taken.
  88. "Sort (A..Z)" Clicking this button will Alphabetize your database.
  89.         Alphabetization is done based on the contents of the "Name" field
  90.         described earlier (the upper-leftmost white box) that usually has your
  91.         Name in it (or company/corporation). Sorting starts with the first
  92.         letter, so if you want your database sorted alphabetically by LAST
  93.         name, make sure you enter it INTO the database lastname first.
  94.         Something like: "Lampiasi, Matt" instead of "Matt Lampiasi". A status
  95.         dialog box will pop up and be displayed as the sorting takes place,
  96.         letting you know what records are being processed (a record is the
  97.         sum of all the "Fields" displayed on your screen at one point). Your
  98.         Main window will disappear temporarily and then rebuild when sorting
  99.         is done. It is, admittedly, very slow.
  100.         I will work on improving its speed, for starters..
  101. "Quit"; Clicking this button will close down the program and return you to
  102.         your previously scheduled program. Make sure you press the "Save"
  103.         button before "Quit"ing if you have made any changes to the currently
  104.         displayed record.

  106. -Names/2 4.0
  107.         *Creates* and uses TWO additional files. One is "People2.Dat"
  108.         This is your actual database, and is where all your entries are
  109.         stored. It is a binary file that cannot be accessed via a text
  110.         editor. The second file created by Names/2, "Name.Cfg", IS a
  111.         plain text file that you can easily edit with any text editor.
  112.         It contains ten lines. Each line corresponds to the ten "fields"
  113.         in your main window of the Names/2 program. What each line in
  114.         Name.Cfg represents is simply the text description of the contents
  115.         of each field on your screen. If you change a line in this file,
  116.         the resulting display when you run Names/2 will also be changed.
  117.         Line one is the "Name" field's description. As I said earlier,
  118.         you could call your first field the "Company" field. This is where
  119.         you do it. Change the first line ("Name") to read "Company". Now
  120.         run Names/2 and look at your display. You'll see the first field
  121.         (next to the upper-leftmost white textbox)
  122.         is now described as the "Company" field. You should have the idea
  123.         by now, right ?
  124. -New Features in version 4.0:
  125. +Alphabetization of your database is now present.
  126.  (Hey, it's a tad slow.. it's my first alphabetizing routine ever).
  127. +More fields to store data in (multiple phone numbers, etc...)
  128. +User-defined naming of fields. For example, The default setup is so that
  129.  the first field (upper left of main window) is the "Name" field. In a
  130.  business environment you could change this to the "Company" field, or
  131.  whatever.. It's important to note this doesn't change any of your actual
  132.  DATA, just the DESCRIPTION of your data.
  133. +Completely revamped interface. It's Much easier to change/add entries now.
  134. +An "updater" util that will convert your 2.x Names/2 datafiles to the new
  135.  4.0 format (as much as possible). See Two2Four.Txt for more info.
  136.  Only necessary if you have a database created with Version 2.x of Names/2.

  139.   -searching of any and all fields..
  140.   -Faster sorting.

  145. On the subject of improvements. Names/2 is developed using CA-Realizer
  146. under OS/2 Warp and MS-Windows (also under Warp :). Unfortunately there
  147. is a VERY significant speed difference in programs compiled for OS/2 as
  148. compared with the SAME code compiled for MS-Windows. Unfortunately, the
  149. Warp version is the slower of the two. Hopefully Computer Associates
  150. will keep at it.
