  5. About the program
  6. =================
  7. The birthday program is a small program that can be used to display today's 
  8. and tomorrow anniversaries of you friends and relatives. It is intended to 
  9. be used in the startup folder so you will be informed about the oncoming 
  10. anniversaries each time you start your system. It helps you to remeber to 
  11. give those persons a call or mail them a postcard or something like that.

  16. This package should contain the following files:

  18. main files:
  19.     Birthday.Exe    -   the OS/2 PM based birthday reminder program
  20.     Birthday.Dat    -  the default calendar data base file (plain ASCII)
  21.     Birthday.Hlp    -  the on-line help file of the program
  22.  
  23. additional files:
  24.     Birthday.Inf    -  the help file in INF format (use view.exe to view)
  25.     Readme.1st    -  this file

  28. Installation
  29. ============
  30. 1. copy the three main files to a directory on your hard disk, e.g. a 
  31.    directory where you keep your executables.
  32.  
  33. 2. if you like, you can create a program object for the program, e.g. in you 
  34.    startup folder.
  35.  
  36. 3. use any ASCII editor to place your own birthday information into the 
  37.    'birthday.dat' file or to create you own calendar file; it's easy, for each 
  38.    birthday, simply write the DAY OF THE MONTH, the MONTH number and the TEXT 
  39.    that must appear on screen (e.g. the name of the person) on a single line; 
  40.    see the supplied calendar file 'birthday.dat' for an example.

  47. The program makes use of a calendar file to read the birthday information
  48. from. By default this is the file 'birthday.dat'. If you want the program to 
  49. use that file, the file  must be in the current working directory when 
  50. starting the program. The program will not look around to find the data file. 
  51. As an alternative, to overcome this shortcomming, you can also specify the path 
  52. and filename of the calendar file as a parameter to the program. Note that the 
  53. birthday program will not complain nor give any feedback if a calendar file 
  54. cannot be found or read.
