  4. Introduction
  5. ============

  7. BlackBook is an address book program for OS/2 Warp 3.0 Presentation
  8. Manager (or later versions).  In addition to the usual address book
  9. database functions, BlackBook adds a phone dialer, an Internet
  10. sendmail (SMTP) client for sending E-mail, interoperability with IBM
  11. WebExplorer or other WorldWide Web (WWW) browsers, and a birthday
  12. notification (reminder) program.
  13.  
  14. BlackBook is freeware.  You are not required to pay for its use so
  15. long as it is for your own private use.  Use of BlackBook by any
  16. organization (including schools and businesses) requires that a
  17. separate software license be purchased from the author.  Please see
  18. the license agreement below for further details.

  21. System Requirements
  22. ===================

  24. The following are the (conjectured) minimum system requirements needed
  25. to install and use all of BlackBook's features, on OS/2 Warp and OS/2
  26. Warp Connect:
  27.  
  28.  - i386 CPU.
  29.  - 8MB of RAM.
  30.  - 4MB of free disk space on an HPFS filesystem.
  31.  - 1200bps modem.
  32.  
  33. Additionally, the following software must be installed for you to take
  34. advantage of all of BlackBook's features:
  35.  
  36.  - IBM OS/2 Warp or Warp Connect (Win-OS/2 support not required) (or
  37.    later).
  38.  - IBM TCP/IP 2.0 (or later) for OS/2.
  39.  - A WorldWide Web broser (e.g., IBM WebExplorer, Lynx, etc.).
  40.  - MMOS/2 installed (required for BlackBook Birthday Notification).

  43. Installation
  44. ============
  45.  
  46. 0.  Extract the BlackBook archive (bbk100c.zip) into a temporary
  47.     directory.  e.g., "unzip bbk100c.zip -d C:\TEMP"
  48.  
  49.     You should use Info-ZIP's unzip to extract files from the
  50.     archive, *not* PKUnzip for DOS (not tested with PKUnzip for OS/2).
  51.     Info-ZIP is freely available at most OS/2 FTP sites.  A copy of
  52.     unzip is also available at the BlackBook Home Page.
  53.  
  54.     NOTE:  BlackBook uses "long" (non-8.3) filenames, and therefore
  55.     requires a non-FAT filesystem such as HPFS to install.  If you
  56.     wish to install to a non-HPFS partition, you will have to rename
  57.     some files (which will break the installation script, unless you
  58.     also edit Install.dat), including the documentation files (which
  59.     will no longer be accessible from BlackBook).  FAT is an archaic,
  60.     outdated filesystem that belongs in the back pages of computing
  61.     history.  If you are masochistic enough to be still using it, you
  62.     deserve whatever terrible fate befalls your data.
  63.  
  64. 1.  Read the License Agreement, below.  If you do not agree to comply
  65.     with the terms and conditions set out in the License Agreement,
  66.     stop here.
  67.  
  68. 2.  Run the install program, Install.exe.  Specify where you want to
  69.     install the BlackBook files, and install the components you wish
  70.     to use.
  71.  
  72. 3.  Run BlackBook and set configuration options as necessary. Once
  73.     you've created a BlackBook database file, and if you have
  74.     installed BlackBook Birthday Notification, set the parameters for
  75.     the Birthday Notification object to the full path of your database
  76.     file (Birthday Notification will not run without it).
  77.  
  78. 4.  Delete the installation files from the temporary directory, as
  79.     needed.

  81. 5.  Explore, experiment, and enjoy!

  84. Removing BlackBook
  85. ==================
  86.  
  87. 0.  Run the install program, Install.exe (or using the BlackBook
  88.     Installation object created in the BlackBook folder).
  89.  
  90. 1.  If necessary, enter the directory in which BlackBook is installed.
  91.     (If you are running Install using the BlackBook Installation
  92.     object, the directory will be set to the one you specified when
  93.     installing BlackBook.)
  94.  
  95. 2.  Under Installation Type, select ``Uninstall.'' Click on the
  96.     ``Uninstall'' button. The uninstall process will proceed.
  97.  
  98. 3.  If there are any files or directories left over after the
  99.     uninstall procress, remove them.

  130. BlackBook Birthday Notification v1.00b
  131. --------------------------------------
  132.   - Released as an upgrade to Notify only, not as a whole package.
  133.     Fixes to BlackBook Notify for users with display problems (notably
  134.     with Cirrus Logic cards and drivers).
  135.   - Certain details were missed in implementing the ``Hardwired
  136.     colours'' fix/workaround for those with display problems, and
  137.     so it may or may not have worked at all. (fixed)

  139. BlackBook v1.00c
  140. ----------------
  141.   - Second maintenance release (96/08/04): bug fixes in BlackBook,
  142.     minor features added to BlackBook and Notify, documentation
  143.     updates.
  144.   - BlackBook saved the filenames of photo files incorrectly if they
  145.     were added to the database when it was first created (i.e. before
  146.     the database was saved and re-opened). This prevented the photos
  147.     from displaying correctly, and prevented the user from
  148.     re-specifying the photo files. (fixed)
  149.   - As a consequence of the above fix, BlackBook now recalculates any
  150.     ``relative paths'' to photo files whenever the database file is
  151.     saved. If the photo can be found with the same sub-path relative
  152.     to the database's new directory, the relative path is unchanged.
  153.     Otherwise, the photo's path is set to its old location, relative
  154.     to the new one if possible.
  155.   - New feature: you can know enter an illegal or zero year for a
  156.     person's birthdate, in case you don't know the year of a person's
  157.     birth; this results in "??" being displayed for the year of
  158.     birth, both in BlackBook and in Notify.

  178. =================

  180. Please read this section in full before installing BlackBook.
  181.  
  182. In the following text, "BlackBook" refers to this software package and
  183. all accompanying files and utilities.  "The author" refers to Viet-Tam
  184. Luu, creator of BlackBook and owner of the copyright to BlackBook.
  185.  
  186. BlackBook is freeware.  This means that you do not have to pay for the
  187. right to use and distribute it, with the following terms, conditions
  188. and restrictions:
  189.  
  190. 1.  As freeware, BlackBook may only be used for your own personal
  191.     (non-work or business-related) use.  If you are a charity, please
  192.     apply with the author for a free license.
  193.  
  194. 2.  If the above condition does not apply to you, i.e. if you are a
  195.     business, non-charity organization, or if you otherwise plan to
  196.     use BlackBook for commercial purposes, you must additionally abide
  197.     by the terms of the Commercial License Agreement, below.
  198.  
  199. 3.  As freeware, no fee may be charged for the distribution of the
  200.     BlackBook license.  In other words, the only fee that you are
  201.     allowed to charge when distributing BlackBook is a modest fee to
  202.     cover the cost of the media or other means of distribution (e.g.
  203.     on-line time).
  204.  
  205. 4.  You may only distribute BlackBook in its original distribution
  206.     package form, i.e. in the form released by the author (either a
  207.     single archive file, e.g. bbk100c.zip or a single self-extracting
  208.     archive, e.g. bbk100c.exe).  You may not distribute modified
  209.     versions of the distribution file.  If you need a special form of
  210.     distribution, please contact the author for authorization.  You
  211.     may, however, include the distribution file (unmodified) as part
  212.     of another archive.  You may also rename the distribution file, as
  213.     long as it still contains some representation of the name
  214.     "BlackBook" (e.g. "BB," "BBook", etc.) and the version number (the
  215.     actual version number, e.g. "1.00c" or without the decimal point,
  216.     e.g. "100C").

  218. 5.  You may not modify any executable files included with BlackBook.
  219.     This includes BlackBook.exe, BBNotify.exe, BBNotif.exe, and
  220.     Install.exe, and any other executables.  You may not distribute
  221.     as part of the BlackBook package any modified versions of other
  222.     files in the distribution.

  224. 6.  In using BlackBook, you agree that you cannot hold the author
  225.     responsible or liable for any damages and losses (monetary,
  226.     material, or otherwise) caused directly or indirectly by the use,
  227.     installation, or distribution of BlackBook.  This includes damages
  228.     and losses that may caused by agents such as computer viruses that
  229.     may become attached to the distribution file.

  231. 7.  By installing and/or using BlackBook, you have stated your
  232.     implicit agreement to this and all above terms.  Upon violation
  233.     of these terms and conditions, the author reserves the right to
  234.     withdraw your license to use and/or distribute BlackBook, and to
  235.     take further legal action should he feel it necessary.

  238. Commercial License Agreement
  239. ============================

  241. If you are using BlackBook for commercial, governmental, or
  242. educational purposes, or in such a setting, or for any purposes that
  243. would not be considered "personal use," the following additional
  244. terms apply to you:

  246. 1.  All terms of the above License Agreement apply, except those
  247.     pertaining to free use.
  248.  
  249. 2.  You may distribute BlackBook freely to other parties.  Those
  250.     parties must also comply with the terms of both the License
  251.     Agreement and the Commercial License Agreement (if applicable),
  252.     including additional licensing fees, etc.

  254. 3.  License fees: You must pay the author of BlackBook a license fee.
  255.     Note that you are not paying for the software itself; you are
  256.     paying for the *right* to use the software. Payment of a license
  257.     fee gives you the right for an indefinite period of time to use
  258.     BlackBook for whatever purposes you see fit.

  260.     License fees are calculated according to the number of BlackBook
  261.     installations or users (whatever is smallest) at your site, as follows:

  270.     Prices are listed in Canadian dollars.  Prices in other currencies
  271.     are the same amount in Canadian dollars, calculated according to
  272.     current (at the time of payment) exchange rates.

  276.     Payment of license fee gives you the right for an indefinite
  277.     period of time to use BlackBook for whatever purposes you see fit.
