  16. There are four menus in the OS/2 Study Bible , the main menu , the translation 
  17. menu, the button menu, and the search results menu.

  22. The main menu has two selections, File and Exit. It  is located just under the 
  23. button menu.

  27. The File option on the main menu will allow you to open and close translations, 
  28. open and close output text files and obtain product information.

  30. Exit

  32. The Exit option on the main menu will allow you to end the program. When you 
  33. end the program, the current session 's window placements, the current verse 
  34. for each translation window, and the contents of the search results window are 
  35. saved. These items are restored when the program is restarted. Any information 
  36. that is not saved in the folder is discarded.

  39. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4. Translation Menu Selections ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

  41. A copy of the Translation Menu is located on each translation window. The top 
  42. level choices are Edit , Navigate , Search and Folder .

  46. The items in the Edit menu will allow you to copy verses to the clipboard, add 
  47. selected verses to the folder, write selected verses to the output file, and 
  48. select a font for the translation window. 
  49.  
  50. The three export functions copy, add and write use the verses that are 
  51. selected. To see how to selected a range of verses go to selecting verse 
  52. ranges.

  54. Navigate 
  55.  
  56. The items in the  Navigate menu will allow you to change the location of where 
  57. you are currently reading.

  59. If you wish to jump directly to a specific verse then select Jump To a 
  60. reference. 
  61.  
  62. If you want to navigate using the search results that you have found then 
  63. select Next Verse in Search Results or Prev Verse in Search Results. Most 
  64. people find it easier to use the  button menu for this operation.

  68. The only item in the search menu is Search for Text. See Searching for more 
  69. information.

  73. In the Folder menu you may open an existing folder or view the existing folder. 
  74. Be careful and save the contents of the existing folder before you open a new 
  75. one.

  80. The button menu allows you to perform the most common tasks with a single click 
  81. of the mouse. It is the same as selecting the option from the main menu or from 
  82. a translation menu.

  111. There are various windows in the OS/2 Study Bible , the translation window, the 
  112. search results window, the folder dialog box, the search concordance dialog 
  113. box, and the jump to dialog box.

  116. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 7. The Translation Window ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

  118. The translation window contains the bible text, the menu, the minimize button, 
  119. the maximize button, and the vertical scroll bar. 
  120.  
  121. The bible text appears with the name of the verse preceding each verse. The 
  122. text can be selected to form a search criteria list, or to form a range of 
  123. verses. 
  124.  
  125. The minimize button will minimize the window and place it an the bottom of the 
  126. main window appearing as an icon. The maximize button will cause the 
  127. translation window to fill the entire inner portion of the main window. 
  128.  
  129. The vertical scroll bar will allow you to move a verse at a time, a screen at a 
  130. time, or allow you to move blindly move to another place in the bible. Earlier 
  131. test versions included a popup window which informed you where you would jump 
  132. to when you released the slider. It could be added in the future if there was 
  133. overwhelming demand for it.

  136. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8. Search Results window ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
  137.  
  138. The search results window is the main reason for having a computer based bible 
  139. in the first place. It saves the tedious time it would have normally taken had 
  140. you had to look them up manually. 
  141.  
  142. The search results window will appear once the search has been completed by the 
  143. search concordance dialog box. 
  144.  
  145. The search results window consists of the following elements: the menu, the 
  146. search string, the listbox, and the OK, Cancel , Prev, and More push buttons. 
  147.  
  148. The menu allows you to copy the search results to the clipboard, add the 
  149. results to the folder, and write the results to an output text file. 
  150.  
  151. The listbox contains the names of the verses which match the search criteria 
  152. and a portion of the verse text. Depending on a number of things the word 
  153. actually searched for may not be visible in the listbox. If the window is 
  154. enlarged, it will appear. It is suggested that you use a small font for the 
  155. search results window. 
  156.  
  157. When the OK button is pressed, the currently highlighted verse will appear in 
  158. the most recently active translation window. This action is also performed if 
  159. you double-click on the verse in the listbox. 
  160.  
  161. The Prev and More buttons are used when the search results produce an extremely 
  162. large number of matches. When that occurs, the More button will be activated. 
  163. When the More button is pressed, the next section of the results will be placed 
  164. into the listbox and the Prev button will be activated.

  167. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 9. The Folder Dialog Box ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

  169. The Folder Dialog.

  171. The folder dialog allows you to view and manipulate the contents of the folder. 
  172.  
  173. The list box displays the range of verses in each item and which translation it 
  174. was imported from. 
  175.  
  176. Underneath the list box is the verse viewer window. This displays the first 
  177. verse of the item of which the dotted 'cursor' is in the listbox. This is 
  178. useful when you want to delete items from the listbox. 
  179.  
  180. The export buttons allow you to copy the verses in the folder to the clipboard, 
  181. or write the verses to a text file. The text file must be opened in order to 
  182. perform the write. 
  183.  
  184. The edit buttons allow you to clear the contents of the folder or selectively 
  185. delete items from the listbox. This is a useful tool when you have added verses 
  186. from the  search results window to the folder and want to eliminate irrelevant 
  187. verses from your list before you export them. 
  188.  
  189. The two buttons on the bottom of the folder dialog box allow you to hide and 
  190. save the folder. Hiding the folder does not clear it. It allows you to resume 
  191. working with the other windows. Saving the folder saves the items in the 
  192. listbox to a disk file. You must give the file a name that conforms with your 
  193. file system.

  196. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 10. Search Concordance Dialog Box ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

  198. The search concordance dialog box is used to enter your search criteria and 
  199. parameters and to perform the search. 
  200.  
  201. If the search criteria list is not empty then its contents will be moved into 
  202. the "Words" entryfield when the search concordance dialog box is opened. 
  203.  
  204. There are two types of search methods. An AND search and an OR search. The type 
  205. of search is selected by clicking on the appropriate radio button in the Method 
  206. group. 
  207.  
  208. The AND search will find the verses in which all of the words in the search 
  209. criteria list reside. The OR search will find the verses in which any of the 
  210. words reside. 
  211.  
  212. In order to confine the search area in which your results will lie you can 
  213. enter the range limitations. The first entryfield will be where the search will 
  214. start, and the second entryfield will be where the search will end. The method 
  215. of entering the verse is the same as in the upper portion of the Jump To dialog 
  216. box. 
  217.  
  218. The most common range delimiters is to search in just the Old Testament or 
  219. search in just the New Testament. The demo version of the OS/2 Study Bible only 
  220. contains the New Testament, so this feature is irrelevant at this point.

  223. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 11. Jump To Dialog Box ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

  225. The Jump To dialog box lets you jump directly to a verse. You have two methods 
  226. to do so. You may type in the reference or may select it using the listbox and 
  227. spin buttons. 
  228.  
  229. In order to select which method you must select the appropriate radio button at 
  230. the top of the dialog box. The choices are: type it, or select it. 
  231.  
  232. If you want to type it then you may type in the full reference (i.e. Psa 16.3 
  233. ), the book and chapter (i.e. Psa 16), or just the book (i.e. Psa). The 
  234. portions left blank are assumed that you what the first verse or chapter. One 
  235. special thing to note is that you may omit the colon and just type in a space 
  236. instead (i.e. Psa 16 3). If you type in a chapter or verse number that is 
  237. larger than exists it will not jump anywhere.

  239. If you wish to select the verse you wish to jump to then select the book, 
  240. chapter and verse from the dialog controls. You may optionally view the books 
  241. in alphabetic or book order by checking or unchecking the box.

  243. Once you have typed or selected the verse, press the OK button.

  248. There are several processes in the OS/2 Study Bible, searching, navigating, 
  249. selecting a range of verses, and selecting a font.

  254. You can initiate a search by clicking on the search button located in the 
  255. button menu or by selecting search from a translation menu. 
  256.  
  257. Before you begin your search it is easiest to select words in a translation 
  258. window and add them to your search criteria list. See Creating Search Criteria. 
  259.  
  260. After you have initiated a search the Search Concordance dialog box will appear 
  261. and the contents of the search criteria list will be placed in the Words 
  262. entryfield. 
  263.  
  264. Set the search type and range for your search and press the OK button. 
  265.  
  266. When the search is complete the Search Results window will appear containing 
  267. the verses that matched your search parameters and criteria.

  270. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 14. Navigation ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

  272. You can navigate by one of three methods. You can use the vertical scroll bar 
  273. located on the right side of each translation window, use the Navigate menu 
  274. option on the translation window, or use the accelerator short-cut keys. 
  275.  
  276. You may move a verse at a time (up/down), move to an adjoining chapter (+/-), 
  277. move to an adjoining book (end/home), or move to the next or previous screen 
  278. (PageDn/PageUp).

  281. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 15. Selecting a range of verses ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
  282.  
  283. Selecting a range of verses is accomplished by two events. The first verse in 
  284. the range must be marked, and the last verse in the range must be marked. 
  285.  
  286. To mark the beginning of the range, click with mouse button 1 on the book, 
  287. chapter, verse part of the verse (i.e. Gen 1.1 ). 
  288.  
  289. To mark the last verse of the range, click with mouse button 2 on the book, 
  290. chapter, verse part of the verse (i.e. Gen 1.5 ). 
  291.  
  292. The first verse of the range will have its header highlighted in bright blue 
  293. (i.e.  Gen 1.1). The last verse of the range will be highlighted in dark blue 
  294. (i.e. Gen 1.5 ). 
  295.  
  296. Other methods could have been used but it was my personal preference not to use 
  297. the popular click and drag method. The main reason is that it quickly becomes 
  298. very tedious when you want to highlight large portions of text when using that 
  299. method. My method allows you to click button 1 on the first verse of Matthew, 
  300. click button 2 on last verse of Matthew and then export the text to a file. The 
  301. other method does not allow you to do that or takes too long to be useful.

  303. Once you have selected a range of verses they may be copied to the clipboard, 
  304. added to the folder, or written to an output text file.

  307. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 16. Selecting a font ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

  309. The font and help functions were the last features added to the program and 
  310. still need to be completed. They will be completed for the next release. 
  311.  
  312. The font can be changed from two methods. You should experiment with both 
  313. methods to see which one is the most reliable. The first method in using the 
  314. Font Palette program that is a part of the OS/2 Operating System. The second 
  315. method is to select a font from the font dialog box. 
  316.  
  317. The Font Palette is usually located in the OS /2 Sytem folder, in the System 
  318. Setup folder. You may want to move it to the desktop if you use this method. 
  319. Drag one of the fonts to  a translation window. All of the translation windows 
  320. will change to that font. This also will work with the search results window 
  321. but you need to experiment with it.

  323. You may also change the font using the font icon on the button menu, or select 
  324. the Select a Font option from a translation window menu's Edit section. The 
  325. button menu method is the preferable of the two. When the button is pressed the 
  326. application determines which type of window is active (translation or search 
  327. results) and then change the fonts of that window type to the selected font.

  329. Whichever method you choose, the font should be saved when you exit the 
  330. application. Sometimes it seems to lose it. It is a known bug.

  333. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 17. Creating Search Criteria ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

  335. If the word that you want to search for is visible on a translation window, 
  336. then this feature will streamline the search process for you. 
  337.  
  338. You create a search criteria list by clicking with mouse button 1 on a word in 
  339. a translation window. This word will become the first word in your search 
  340. criteria list. If there was a previous criteria list then it is erased first 
  341. before the new list is created.

  343. To add words to the search criteria list, click with mouse button 2 on the 
  344. additional word. This word will be appended to the search criteria list.

  349. There are two ways to export text, the clipboard and the output text file in 
  350. the OS/2 Study Bible . The folder  also plays a key role in the gathering of 
  351. the text to be exported.

  356. The folder is a collection of selected verses. It allows you to store them as a 
  357. group to disk for later retrieval. Verses can be added to the folder from a 
  358. translation window and from the search results window.

  360. The verses in the folder can be copied to the clipboard or written to an output 
  361. text file. The  folder dialog box is used during these operations.

  364. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 20. Output File ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

  366. One of the most important features of the OS/2 Study Bible is the ability to 
  367. export verses to a file. This file can then be printed or edited with a word 
  368. processor. 
  369.  
  370. The first step that is necessary is that you must open a output file. This can 
  371. be accomplished by clicking on the open file icon from the button menu, or by 
  372. selecting it from a translation window menu. 
  373.  
  374. Once you have an open file you can write verses to the output file. Verses can 
  375. be written to the output file from the translation window, the search results 
  376. window, and from the folder dialog box. Each window has its own distinct method 
  377. for accomplishing the export. 
  378.  
  379. Any time you wish you may close the output file and open a new one. The only 
  380. place that you can close the output file is from a translation window menu.

  382. The output file is automatically closed when the program is closed.

  387. The clipboard allows programs to exchange information. The OS/2 Study Bible 
  388. allows you to copy verses to the clipboard from a translation window, from the 
  389. search results window, and from the folder.

  391. The clipboard has a size limitation. So it is not recommended that large 
  392. numbers of verses be copied to the clipboard.
