Useful Features Not Found On Any Menu
There are a number of features of God's Word For Windows that cannot be found on a menu and are not that obvious but are none the less very useful. They are the program's use of
float overs
and
double clicking,
and the
right mouse button
Float Overs.
While you are looking at a passage, try floating your mouse cursor over various names in a passage. For example, do a word search on Moses and then in the first passage displayed, pick a number of names and float your cursor over top of them. As you do, the status bar on the bottom of the screen changes. A description of that person or place is displayed compliments of Hitchcocks Dictionary of Biblical Names. The same thing works for Strong's numbers. Turn Strong's Numbers on, float your mouse over the numbers and watch the status bar.
Double Clicking
When you are looking at a passage, Float your mouse pointer over any person's name, place or Biblical Word and if that word is in Easton's Bible Dictionary, the mouse pointer changes. Under Windows, the pointer changes to a vertical arrow. Under Windows 95, the mouse pointer changes to an arrow/question mark. Under OS/2 the pointer changes to an i in a blue circle, indicating additional information. At this point you can double click on the word, and that word is explained compliments of Easton's Bible Dictionary. You may also double click on any word or passage (i.e Rev 22:21) within any dictionary definition.
Right Mouse Button
When you are looking at a passage you can use the right mouse button to perform a number of functions including looking words up in the dictionary or lexicon. Point the cursor to a word, click the right mouse button and select

Searching
The main purpose of this program is to help you find Bible passages quickly. To this end, God's Word offers you a wide variety of searching options. You can search for verses on a topic, containing a particular phrase or containing a word, words or even not containing a word. You don't necessarily need to know how to spell a word, but instead can spell it phonetically. The following sections describe how to use the search features.
Looking up Verses By Reference
If you know the verse you want to look up, there are two ways of getting to it: using the
Go to...
function and using the
Direct Reference

feature is probably for you, otherwise, use the
Direct reference
feature of the search dialog.
To use the Go to function, perform the following steps.
1. Pull down the search menu and select Go to...
2. Type in the verse you wish to go to. For example 1 john 1:9

Searching for verses matching a given expression
Sometimes, you only know a few words that may or not be in a verse. In these cases, the expression search is the tool you should use. God's Word supports expressions containing the logical connectives
and or
and
As an example , you may search using the expression
beast and (horse or rider)
. This expression would find the verses containing the words
beast
horse
and verses containing the words
beast
rider
You can change the order of expression evaluation by moving the round brackets. For example
(beast and horse) or rider
would match 8 verses match because God's Word finds all the verses containing beast and horse and adds them to the list of verses containing the word rider.
*Note: You may use Strong's numbers when forming your expressions as will. For example Jerusalem not 3389 is a perfectly acceptable expression.
Example:
1. Pull down the
Search
menu and select
Search...
2. Activate the expression field by clicking in it with the mouse.
3. Type in the expression
beast and (horse or rider)
4. Click the
button.
5. 2 Verses will appear in the Verses Found list box, starting with Revelation 6:5.

1. Pull down the
Search
menu and select
Search...
2. Click the
[Phonetic...]
button.
3. Type in the word as close as you can to its spelling.

Search
menu and select

2. Click the
[Phonetic...]

6. Click on each of them, then click the

7. 767 Verses will appear in the Verses Found list box, starting with Joshua 10:1.
Searching for words using Wild cards
Using wild cards to locate verses is useful if you do not know how spell a word or a number of variations of a word are of interest to you. For instance, if you wanted to all occurrences of Thaddaeus but could not remember if it contained one "d" or 2 "d"s you could specify thad* as your word to search for. Another example would be if you wanted all occurrences of the words pray, prayer, praying or prayed, you could specify pray* as your search word. Another example would be if you wanted to find all the "ites" in the Bible such as canaanites, hittites, ... you could specify *ites as your search word. Special characters that are used in wild card expressions are as follows:
* An asterisk matches any number of characters. Examples: thad* would match Thaddaeus and cana* would match Canaan.
? A question mark matches any one character. For example: pray?? would match prayed and prayer.
[ ] [ ] matches any characters between the square brackets. Examples: [ch]*ites would match canaanites, hittites.
To use wild cards, perform the following steps
1. Pull down the
Search
menu and select
Search...
2. Click the
[Wild Card...]
button
3. Type in the wild card expression you wish to search for
4. Start the search by clicking the
button.
5. Many words will appear in the list box. Click the ones you are interested in, then click the
button to locate the verses containing them.
Example:
1. Pull down the
Search
menu and select
Search...
2. Click the
[Wild Card...]
button.
3. Type in the word
thad*
4. Click the
button.
5. 1 word will appear in the list box: Thaddaeus
6. Click on it, then click the
button.
7. 2 verses will appear in the Verses Found list box, starting with Matthew 10:3
Limiting a search to a group of books
Sometimes the number of verses that a word appears in is too large to be of use. For example, if you searched for all occurrences of God, you would find that there are 3892 occurrences of God throughout the Bible. One way to trim this number down to a more manageable size is to limit the books that are searched. Perhaps you are only interested in the occurrences of God in the Paul's Letters. By searching only Paul's Letters for God, the number of verses that match would be 495. To limit the number of books searched, perform the following steps:
1. Pull down the
Search
menu and choose the area to limit your search to from the menu.
2. Perform your topic or word search as described above.
Example:
1. Pull down the
Search
menu and choose
Pentateuch
2. Activate the first words field by clicking on it with the mouse and type
creat*
3. Click the
button
4. 17 verses will appear in the Verses Found list box starting with Genesis 1:1
Note: If you are unhappy with the predefined selections on the Search menu, or if you are only interested in a single book, you may choose
Specific Books
to search by choosing the specific books menu item from the Search menu.
Refining Searches
After finding a group of verses of interest, perhaps by using a topic search, you might want to limit your search to the resulting list of verses. For example, you might want to find the list of verses containing the word light that also is on the subject of angels. To accomplish this, perform the following steps.
1. Perform a topic or word search as described above.
2. Click the
[Verses Found] r
adio button.
3. Perform a word search as described above.
Example:
1. Activate the search dialog by pulling down the
Search
menu and selecting
Search...
2. Select
Angels
from the Topic drop-down list box.
3. Click the
button
4. Activate the Search dialog again by pulling down the

Perhaps you are working on a sermon on children in marriage and would like to remember the references you used. A good way to do that would be to add a topic Children in Marriage and add all your verses to that topic.
To add a topic to the topical index, perform the following steps:
1. Pull down the
Topics
menu and choose
Insert Topic
. Be sure not to get confused with the Topic drop-down list box in the search section.
2. Type in the name of the topic you are adding and then press the
button.
To delete a topic from the topical index, perform the following steps:
1. Pull down the
Topics

Using the electronic hilighter pen
Hilighting is a convenient way to draw attention to important verses. God's Word for Windows comes with 4 hilighter pens. According to a local Christian book store, it is common to use the hilighters to denote the following:
Blue - promises
Green - commandments
Yellow - warnings
To hilight a passage, perform the following steps
1. Select a verse or verses using your mouse.
2. Pull down the
Hilight
menu and select one of the colors.
3. Optional - rather than selecting the hilight menu, you may simply click the right mouse button and pick a color off of the speed menu.
To unhilight a passage, perform the following steps
1. Select a verse or verses using your mouse.
2. Pull down the
Hilight
menu and select
Unhilight
