This is my attempt at listing some Frequently Asked Questions for the
newsgroup comp.os.os2.networking.tcp-ip, which is where IBM tells us
all to look for support and exchange information about OS/2 Warp when
running the Internet Access Kit.

extracted from posts made to comp.os.os2.networking.tcp-ip and thus
has only the credibility of the original poster, which can range

EDITOR'S NOTE:  This document is very much a work in process.  In fact,
I have not yet completed editing it.  However, because there is so
much useful information available herein, I have decided to go ahead
and post it anyway.  This should result in some comments from all of

WebExplorer 1.01  (updated 3/31) is now available!

It now recognizes uppercase file extensions (i.e.: .GIF .JPG).
It also "gives up" faster when you're disconnected.

Just use "Retrieve Software Updates"

If, for some reason, you do not have this icon, just use an
OS/2 command prompt and type:

  LINKUP.EXE UPDATE.EXE /h updates.gopher.ibm.com

All my problems were solved by using the latest inet.sys driver (2.07).

Yes, indeed.  A very good one, in fact.  It is an OS/2 port of
Ghostscript, a Postscript clone by GNU.  You can get it via anonymous
FTP from:

    ftp-os2.cdrom.com

in directory:

    pub/os2/32bit/unix/ghost

I _think_ you need the following files (if I'm wrong, you may need to
fetch others from the same directory):

The first five files constitute the Ghostscript interpreter itself and
its associated font files.  Be sure to see the notes for taking
advantage of OS/2's built-in Adobe Type 1 fonts.  The last file is a PM
viewer that will call Ghostscript automatically.  Assuming all is
loaded and happy, and the directory with the viewer is on your path
list, then the following entry will work as the Postscript viewer:

    gvpm

Works fine for me.

As an added bonus, you can use Ghostscript to set up a Postscript
"printer" that will output to a non-Postscript real printer.  We have
an HP Laserjet III (without the PS cartridge).  Using Ghostscript, we
get excellent Postscript output.  To do that, you need one additional
piece of software (from the same archive):

    pub/os2/32bit/unix/printmon.zip

That program, in turn (and probably the Ghostscript stuff, now that I
think of it), requires the EMX runtime package.  That's at:

    pub/os2/32bit/unix/emx09a/emxrt.zip

The problem lies with PKUNZIP2.  You see, it was apparently never
updated
to handle the latest compression algorithms from PKWARE.  I downloaded
(via FTP) the supposed "latest" OS/2 version from ftp.pkware.com and it
was
an even older version of OS/2 PKUNZIP2 than the one on the IBM BBS!!!

So, the answer is to get a copy of the latest DOS version of PKUNZIP
and run
it in a DOS window.  I did this with a copy of the WebExplorer ZIP file
which
I obtained using the Gopher Client (from updates.gopher.ibm.com, Port
77) and
the DOS version of PKUNZIP handled the files fine, except that it did
not put
them in the proper subdirectories.  That was because I forgot to use
the "-d"
switch.

Thus, if you get the UWEB01.ZIP file from the above gopher session, you
should
receive it into (or copy it into) C:\TCPIP (or wherever your TCPIP
directory is)
before you start a DOS session to unzip it using the "-d" switch.
Then, the
decompressed files will be placed into their proper subdirectories.

James, here's a .cmd file which reads your quicklist and creates a
simple .htm format output which you can redirect to a file.

Maintaining my own .html pages locally to organize my urls hasn't been
too difficult.

your own html documents (pages).

I went into Win-OS/2 setup in the System Setup folder and changed
"windowed
session" to "full screen", went into the win-os2 settings and set ATM
on,
and enhanced mode enabled. I get the Times Fax each and every night
with
no problems.

Try it and get back if you have any further problems.

Saturday and Sunday are approaching, so it is time for a reminder
that anyone wanting to try out Person 2 Person/2 (bundled with
Warp) - or Person 2 Person for Windows - is welcome to call over the
Internet to:

I have checked out the docs, and site names *are* supported. Now
let's see if it works!

A couple of interesting people have made noises like they may turn up,
but I don't want to say who they are in case they don't.



HOW-TO:

1. You need to have a SLIP, PPP or netowork access to the Internet. If
you
    have TIA, I can't call you back to join you into existing calls. Or
so
    it seems.

2.  You need Person to Person for OS/2 or Windows installed. If you
need to
     install it, a re-boot is not required. You just load and go.

3.  You can find out your IP address by entering:

     netstat -a

     at a command prompt (for  Warp IAK users).

4.   Start  the Call Manager

5.   Make sure AnswerMode->autoanswer and PassiveWorking-> Permit
     are selected on the Call Manager OPTIONS menu.

6.   Add my name and IP/site address to your P2P Address Book

4.   When you call, tick only the TALK app. Five people blazing in at
once
     with Chalkboards/clipboards and video blazing away gets a bit
hairy! :-)

Last week, I got to 11 people online and had to bar access temporarily
until
a couple had left and there was room for more. So if you can't get on,
try
later (you should get a message to that effect).

Let me tell you what I did.  First I got the OS/2 apps running.  In
your case all
I would do is see if I could get FTPPM to run or better yet the WWW
browser that
comes with WARP.  Then for grins I lifted one or two WIN apps
directories from
another machine install them on WARP and each and everyone run ran
fine.  This did
not include MOSAIC or NETSCAPE because the WWW browser that comes with
WARP will
run circles around both.  My WARP machine never did have TRUMPET
installed so be
aware if your does there could be some conflicts.  Naturally if you
boot back to
native DOS you will need TRUMPET or something similar.  I think the
above
recommendation covers all the bases so good luck.

I too have had problems getting my windows apps to function correctly
in warp. I
tried all recommendations I saw posted for the last month or so and
still no windows
apps. So I did a lot of experimenting.

After I connected to my internet privider (via PPP) I tested the os/2
apps, worked.

Then tested DOS and os/2 shells, by pinging another site, worked.

Then started windows session (1st standard, then enhanced), all winsock
apps
would timeout and not recognize any connection. The other working apps
still worked.

Then I found a WPING.EXE in \tcpip\dos\bin ( a windows ping program
supplied in warp)
What I found was that if this was the first windows winsock app to
start up, the
virtual TCP/IP would get to all other subsequently started apps (in a
shared,
enhanced 3.1 session). So then they work.

I still can't get netscape to work cleanly. Sometimes the window
painting of the
windows apps gets screwed up and they disappear but are still active on
the
desktop. Then I have to trace their outline by the changing mouse
pointer, and close
the app blind. After all traces of that windows session are gone, a new
one can be
started that will work ok. Is this what people call a 'focus' problem?
Is this due to a
bug in the mach64 driver I am using?

So, have I kludged a workaround that isn't needed, and if not, is there
a way to
set up all windows apps session settings to be the same (ie. enhanced?)
