01/30/96
=======================================================================
Network Printing under OS/2
=======================================================================
Please Read Entire Document for Full Explanation of Procedures
--------------------------------------------------------------
DESCRIPTION
This document describes how to print over a network under OS/2.
RESOLUTION
Note: Make sure you have a backup of any file you intend to change.
1. Type NET USE and press Enter to check your print mapping. This does
the following:
a. It starts the requester if it is not running.
b. It prompts you if you're not logged on.
c. It gives your share mappings to determine if you're set up
correctly.
2. If you get an error message during NET USE, type TYPE LANTRAN.LOG
and press Enter to display the log file.
3. Check the log file for errors. If no errors are listed, type
NET ERROR /REVERSE and press Enter to see the latest error message.
Refer to the LAN documentation for descriptions of LAN error
messages.
4. Make sure the OS/2 printer object is set up correctly. If you are
using a network print object, the mapping should be OK if NET USE
was OK. If you are using a local printer object:
a. Click on the printer object with mouse button 2 to display the
pop-up menu.
b. Select Settings to open the Settings notebook.
b. Select the Port tab and verify the port is set correctly.
5. Make sure the printer driver you are using matches the one used on
the server. If you are using a network printer object, it
automatically matches. If you are using a local printer object:
a. Open the Settings notebook and select the Printer Driver tab.
b. Make sure the driver is correct.
6. If print jobs are disappearing from the queue, and you have either
CM/2 or DB/2 installed:
a. Edit the CONFIG.SYS file on the requester and change
RUN=C:\OS2\EPW.EXE to REM RUN=C:\OS2\EPW.EXE.
b. Edit the STARTUP.CMD and add DETACH C:\OS2\EPW.EXE.
7. If you are using a Hewlett-Packard printer:
a. Open the Settings notebook and select the Queue options tab.
b. Select the Printer specific format checkbox.
8. If you are using a 4033 device, make sure you have the latest
drivers from Lexmark.
OS/2 LAN Server/Requester under WIN-OS/2
----------------------------------------
1. Verify all of the previous steps.
2. Make sure you are using LPTx.OS2 as the port and not LPTx:.
LPTx: is for printing straight to hardware rather than to a
LAN-redirected port.
3. Make sure the selected printer driver is for the selected printer
being printed to.
4. Make sure Use Print Manager has an X in the check box.
5. Under Connect, make sure the check box for Fast Printing Direct to
Port is NOT selected.
