  12. DESCRIPTION
  13.  
  14. During installation of OS/2 Warp 3.0, the system locks up, and the 
  15. following message is received:
  16.  
  17.    SYS0038: System cannot find the ... device.
  18.  
  19. The system also locks up during the first restart. You might hear a 
  20. beep when you insert Diskette 7 after the restart.
  21.  
  22. RESOLUTION
  23.  
  24. The problem is caused by the Joshi or Yoshi virus. On systems infected 
  25. with the Joshi virus, installation fails. You have to remove the files 
  26. infected by the virus.
  27.  
  28. When dealing with the Joshi virus, always turn the system off before 
  29. restarting. If you press Ctrl+Alt+Del, the Joshi virus remains in 
  30. control.
  31.  
  32. If the Installation Diskette is write-enabled, it becomes infected if 
  33. Joshi is active in memory. If the Installation Diskette is in drive A 
  34. and you start installation by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del, the virus also 
  35. intercepts reads during startup (MBR on hard disk; diskette boot record 
  36. on diskettes) and presents the original, uninfected boot record to the 
  37. program that is reading the boot record. This works fine under DOS, but 
  38. when OS/2 is started from the Installation Diskette, when OS/2 gets 
  39. control, the virus cannot intercept reads of the boot record, so any 
  40. program that looks at the boot record sees the Joshi virus.

  42. If the Installation program is looking for a serial number or name 
  43. field in the boot record of the diskette, the same field might be 
  44. different in the boot record of a diskette infected with the Joshi 
  45. virus.

  47. If you have a virus checker, use an uninfected system and check all 
  48. installation diskettes for viruses.
  49.
