OSINHD1 - INSTALLATION PROBLEMS AT DISKETTE 1 WITH OS/2 2.0 OR 2.1
06/18/96
=====================================================================
Installation Problems at Diskette 1 with OS/2 2.0 or OS/2 2.1
=====================================================================
Please Read Entire Document for Full Explanation of Procedures
----------------------------------------------------------------
DESCRIPTION
System locks up at Diskette 1 during OS/2 installation.
RESOLUTION
Note: Make sure you have a backup of any file you intend to
change.
1. Disable your system's Turbo, Cache, and Shadow RAM.
Disable asynchronous memory refresh, if you have it.
Note: Packard Bell users need not disable features.
Enable features when installation is complete.
2. If you have other devices connected, such as tape backup,
modem, scanner, or network card, disable them. They might
cause random lockups during installation. Enable them when
installation is complete.
3. Check your BIOS. If you have DOS 4.0 or higher:
a. Type C: DEBUG and press Enter (a minus sign appears
while using DEBUG).
b. Type d f000:fff0 and press Enter.
c. Type d f000:ffd0 and press Enter.
Three lines appear. Look at the end of the middle line
and you see "7//0011//9933." This is the date, 7/11/93.
d. Type q and press Enter to quit.
Generally speaking:
* The AMI BIOS date should be 5/91.
* The Phoenix and Award BIOS date should be 5/92.
It is recommended that you update your BIOS if the dates are
earlier than the above dates.
4. Do a DISKCOPY of Diskette 1; then edit the CONFIG.SYS file
on Diskette 1 and remark-out (REM) statements for device
drivers you are not using. For example:
* For non-Micro-Channel systems remark-out all IBM2* drivers,
including CLOCK02, PRINT02, and SCREEN02.
* For Micro Channel systems, remark-out all IBM1* drivers,
including CLOCK01, PRINT01, SCREEN01.
Note: The OS2DASD.DMD statement in the CONFIG.SYS file is
needed for your hard disk. Do not remark it out.
The OS2SCSI.DMD statement is needed when your hard
disk is a SCSI.
5. If your system is still locking up at any time before the
first restart, edit the CONFIG.SYS file on Diskette 1 and
remark-out the IBM1S506.ADD statement. This uses IBMINT13.INT.
After the installation is complete, check the CONFIG.SYS file
on the hard disk, and if the IBM1S506.ADD statement is
remarked-out, delete the REM so the statement reads
BASEDEV=IBM1S506.ADD.
6. Check your system for IRQ conflicts; for example, your sound
card and printer might be using the same IRQ. OS/2 does not
allow the sharing of IRQs.
For Redirected Drives
----------------------
If you redirected drives to install OS/2 and receive the
COUNTRY.SYS error message at Diskette 1, you can redirect
drives from B to A by changing the CMOS or BIOS setup and
switching cables on the diskette drives.
If you receive the COUNTRY.SYS error message at Diskette 1
while redirecting:
* Check cables to verify they were switched correctly.
* Check that the CMOS has the changes necessary for switching
drives.
If problems or questions occur while doing this, contact your
vendor.
OS/2 Locks Up during Installation on a System with a Quantum Hardcard
---------------------------------------------------------------------
If the installation process locks up at Diskette 1 when
installing OS/2 on a system with a Quantum Hardcard, do the
following:
1. Make a backup copy of Diskette 1 and use the copy for the
following steps.
2. Start the system from DOS or with a DOS startable diskette.
3. Insert the copy of Diskette 1 in drive A.
4. Edit the CONFIG.SYS file on the copy of Diskette 1.
5. Add the following to the end of the BASEDEV=IBM1S506.ADD
statement:
/A:1 /IRQ:11
The statement now should read:
BASEDEV=IBM1S506.ADD /A:1 /IRQ:11

OS/2 2.1 Disk Read Error on Diskette 1 during Installation
----------------------------------------------------------
On Diskette 1, after the logo appears, the diskette drive starts
seeking rapidly back and forth, the screen clears, and the
following message appears:
A disk read error has occurred. Restart system.
This is known to happen on systems with AOX, HYPER ACE, and
XTEND processor-upgrade cards.
The cause of this error is a file on Diskette 1 called BUNDLE.
Moving this file to a different position on the diskette is
known to fix the problem. To move the file:
1. Insert a DOS startable diskette in the diskette drive: then
turn on the system, or press Ctrl+Alt+Del if it is already
on.
2. At the DOS A:> prompt, type FORMAT B: /v and press Enter.
3. When prompted, insert a blank diskette in the diskette drive.
This diskette becomes the replacement OS/2 Diskette 1.
4. When asked for a volume label, type DISK 1 and press Enter.
5. When asked if you want to format another, type N and press
Enter.
6. When prompted to insert the diskette in drive A, remove the
replacement OS/2 Diskette 1 and insert the DOS Diskette.
7. At the DOS A:> prompt, type DISKCOPY A: B: and press
Enter. When prompted to insert the SOURCE diskette in
drive A, insert the original OS/2 Diskette 1. When prompted
to insert the TARGET diskette in drive B, insert a blank
diskette. This diskette becomes the temporary copy of
Diskette 1.
8. When asked if you want to copy another diskette, type N and
press Enter.
9. When prompted to insert the diskette with COMMAND.COM in
drive A, insert the DOS Diskette.
10. At the DOS A:> prompt, type ERASE B:BUNDLE and press
Enter. When prompted to insert the diskette for drive B,
insert the temporary copy of Diskette 1. When prompted to
insert the diskette for drive A, insert the DOS Diskette.
11. At the DOS A:> prompt, type XCOPY B: A: and press Enter.
When prompted to insert the diskette for drive B, insert
the temporary copy of Diskette 1. When prompted to insert
the diskette for drive A, insert the replacement OS/2
Diskette 1.
12. When prompted to insert the diskette with COMMAND.COM in
drive A:, insert the DOS Diskette.
13. When the DOS A:> prompt appears, type XCOPY B:BUNDLE A:
and press Enter. When prompted to insert the diskette for
drive B, insert the original OS/2 Diskette 1. When prompted
to insert the diskette for drive A, insert the replacement
OS/2 Diskette 1.
OS/2 2.0 and 2.1 Internal Processing Error (IPE) 0F00:7275
----------------------------------------------------------
* When trying to install OS/2 2.0 GA, the installation program
locks up at Installation Diskette 1 with the following:
Internal Processing Error at ## 0F00 : 76A1
60000, 6000
Internal Revision 6.307
* When trying to install OS/2 2.1 GA from CD on a ThinkPad 700C
attached to the Docking Station, the installation program locks
up at Installation Diskette 1 with the following:
Internal Processing Error at ## 0F00 : 7275
60000, 6000
Internal Revision 6.427
This error could be the same for systems currently running:
- OS/2 2.0 Pre-installed code
- OS/2 2.0 10/92 Service Pak I
- OS/2 2.1, but missing the necessary ABIOS files.
Note: It is recommended that you do NOT install OS/2 2.1 over
any Beta version of OS/2 2.1.
* The problem occurs on ROM-loadable systems, such as an IBM
Model 9556/9557.
Do the steps below to copy the BIO file from the Reference
Diskette to copies of the Installation Diskette and
Diskette 1. Update the ABIOS.SYS files on these diskettes and
use the copies for the installation. This is the ABIOS
work-around.
1. Use the DISKCOPY command to make backup diskettes for the
OS/2 2.X Installation Diskette and Diskette 1.
Note: It is very important that you use these backups for
the rest of this procedure.
2. Locate the file, xxxx.BIO on the Reference Diskette of your
PS/2 or PS ValuePoint. (If you don't have the Reference
Diskette, follow the instructions that came with the system
to create one.)
3. Copy the xxxx.BIO file to the Installation Diskette and
Diskette 1.
4. Edit the ABIOS.SYS file on the Installation Diskette. Add
the xxxx.BIO file name to the FIRST line of the file. Use the
same format as the other lines in this file.
5. Copy this modified ABIOS.SYS file to Diskette 1.
With these two modified diskettes, you can continue the
installation beyond Diskette 1. The procedure is the same for
both OS/2 2.0 and OS/2 2.1.
TRAP D during Installation of OS/2 2.1 on a Compaq 386/33L and 486/33L
DeskPro
------------------------------------------------------------------
TRAP000D with CS:EIP=0538:00003823 occurs at Diskette 1 during
installation of OS/2 2.1 on a Compaq 386/33L and 486/33L DeskPro.
1. Make a copy of Diskette 1.
2. Edit the CONFIG.SYS file on the copy of Diskette 1:
a. Change: BASEDEV=IBM2M57.ADD
To: REM BASEDEV=IBM2M57.ADD
b. Change: BASEDEV=IBM2SCSI.ADD
To: REM BASEDEV=IBM2SCSI.ADD
3. Use the edited copy of Diskette 1 to complete the installation.
