--------------------------------------------------------------
DESCRIPTION
When installing OS/2 Warp 4 from a Backpack CD-ROM, using the drivers
that ship with the Backpack CD-ROM, an error message occurs during
Diskette 2 of installation: "OS/2 is unable to operate hard drive or
diskette drive."
This error occurs on any system using Backpack CD-ROM models 163550, or
164550.
RESOLUTION
Obtain the latest drivers for the Backpack CD-ROM from the following
location:
ftp://www.micro-solutions.com/software/backpack/cd_rom/os2_only
Download OS2CD204.EXE to a temporary directory. Change to this
temporary directory, then type OS2CD204 to extract the files.
BPCDOS2.ADD is the file needed for the installation.
Update the OS/2 installation diskettes as follows:
1. Make a DISKCOPY of OS/2 Warp 4 Installation Diskette 1.
2. Edit the CONFIG.SYS file on the diskcopy of Diskette 1.
3. Add the following statement to the second group of BASEDEV
statements:
BASEDEV=PBCDOS2.ADD
4. Add the statement SET COPYFROMFLOPPY=1 to the end of the CONFIG.SYS
file.
5. REM the BASEDEV statements not needed for the particular system:
* For non-Micro-Channel systems remark-out all IBM2* drivers.
* For Micro-Channel systems, remark-out all IBM1* drivers.
6. Save and exit the CONFIG.SYS file.
7. Delete the driver off of Diskette 1 that was remmed out in Step 5
to make room for the backpack driver.
8. Since the installation looks for all of the files on Diskette 1
to copy to the hard disk even though they are not needed, the
following steps must be done:
* If you delete IBM2SCSI.ADD, for instance, use a text editor to
save a file as IBM2SCSI.ADD.
* Repeat this procedure for any file you delete from the diskcopy of
Diskette 1.
9. Restart the system with the OS/2 Warp 4 Installation Diskette,
inserting the modified Diskette 1 when prompted for Diskette 1.
Continue the installation.
