  11. DESCRIPTION
  12.  
  13. This document describes how to install Boot Manager on an OS/2 Preload 
  14. *76 system.
  15.  
  16. RESOLUTION
  17.  
  18. Create Utility Diskettes
  19. ------------------------
  20. 1. Open Welcome.
  21. 2. Open Configuration Tools.
  22. 3. Select Create Utility Diskettes (you need 2 diskettes).
  23.  
  24. Back Up the System
  25. ------------------
  26. 1. Start the system from the Utility diskettes.
  27. 2. Insert Utility Diskette 1 in drive A.
  28. 3. At the A:\ prompt, type BACKUP C: A: /S and press Enter.
  29. 4. Insert diskettes as prompted.

  31. Delete Current Partitions
  32. -------------------------
  33.  1. Start the system from the Utility diskettes.
  34.  
  35.  2. Insert Utility Diskette 1 into drive A.
  36.  
  37.  3. At the A:\ prompt, type FDISK and press Enter.
  38.  
  39.  4. Highlight Current OS/2 Partition press Enter.
  40.  
  41.  5. Select Delete Partition and press Enter.
  42.  
  43.  6. Highlight Free Space Partition and press Enter.
  44.  
  45.  7. Select Install Boot Manager and press Enter.
  46.  
  47.  8. Select at Start of Free Space and press Enter.
  48.  
  49.  9. If you have an additional partition labeled "type FE," select it
  50.     and press Enter.
  51.  
  52. 10. Select Delete Partition and press Enter.
  53.  
  54. You now should have 2 partitions, one for Boot Manager and one of free 
  55. space. If you don't, repeat the process.
  56.  
  57. Create New Partitions for the Operating System
  58. ----------------------------------------------
  59. 1. Highlight Free Space Partition and press Enter.
  60.  
  61. 2. Select Create Partition and press Enter.
  62.  
  63. 3. Set the size for the partition and press Enter. OS/2 needs 60 MB for
  64.    Preload.
  65.  
  66. 4. Select Primary for the partition type and press Enter.
  67.  
  68. 5. Highlight Create partition at start of free space and press Enter.
  69.  
  70. 6. Highlight the newly created partition and press Enter.
  71.  
  72. 7. Select Add to Boot Manager and press Enter.
  73.  
  74. 8. Type the name of the partition and press Enter.
  75.  
  76. Repeat step 2 for each operating system you are installing. You might 
  77. install an extended-logical partition, or multiple extended-logical 
  78. partitions, for data by selecting Extended Logical in step 4 and 
  79. omitting steps 5 through 7.

  81. Format and Install the Operating System
  82. ---------------------------------------
  83. Note: If you are using FDISK, skip steps 1 through 3.

  85.  1. Start the system from the Utility diskettes.
  86.  
  87.  2. Insert Utility Diskette 1.
  88.  
  89.  3. Type FDISK and press Enter.
  90.  
  91.  4. Highlight an unformatted, labeled, primary partition and press
  92.     Enter.
  93.  
  94.  5. Select Make Startable and press Enter.
  95.  
  96. Note: If a C partition is already assigned, skip steps 6 through 7.
  97.  
  98.  6. Press Enter to display the menu.
  99.  
  100.  7. Select Assign C: Partition and press Enter.
  101.  
  102.  8. Press F3 to exit FDISK.
  103.  
  104.  9. Select Save and Exit.
  105.  
  106. 10. Restart the system using the Utility diskettes.
  107.  
  108. 11. Insert Utility Diskette 1.
  109.  
  110. 12. Type FORMAT C: to format the FAT file system; then press Enter.
  111.  
  112. 13. Press Y after the warning screen appears.
  113.  
  114. 14. Press Enter for no volume label.
  115.  
  116. 15. Restart the system.
  117.  
  118. 16. Initiate Install or Restore:
  119.  
  120.     For DOS:
  121.  
  122.     For steps 10 and 11, insert DOS installation diskettes in
  123.     drive A and select Install.
  124.  
  125.     For OS/2:
  126.  
  127.     a. Start from the Utility diskettes.
  128.     b. Insert Utility Diskette 1.
  129.     c. Type RESTORE A: C: /S and press Enter.
  130.     d. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  131.  
  132. Repeat step c for each primary partition. If you have extended logical 
  133. partitions, they can be formatted from an OS/2 command prompt when the 
  134. procedure is complete.
  135.  
  136. Activate Boot Manager
  137. ---------------------
  138. Note: If you are using FDISK, skip steps 1 through 3.
  139.  
  140.  1. Start the system from the Utility diskettes.
  141.  
  142.  2. Insert Utility Diskette 1.
  143.  
  144.  3. Type FDISK and press Enter.
  145.  
  146.  4. Highlight Boot Manager Partition and press Enter.
  147.  
  148.  5. Select Delete Partition and press Enter.
  149.  
  150.  6. Highlight the 1 MB of free space just created and press Enter.
  151.  
  152.  7. Select Install Boot Manager and press Enter.
  153.  
  154.  8. Select At the beginning of free space and press Enter.
  155.  
  156.  9. Press Enter again.
  157.  
  158. 10. Select Set startup values and press Enter.
  159.  
  160. 11. Leave the default blank and set the default time to what you want;
  161.     then press Enter.
  162.  
  163. 12. Press F3 to exit FDISK.
  164.  
  165. 13. Select Save and Exit; then press Enter.
