  5.     TITLE: 940308 MOST COMMON SETTINGS FOR IMPROVING PERFORMANCE
  6.            IN WINDOWS APPLICATIONS OR WIN-OS/2 FULL SCREEN

  8.     DESCRIPTION OF SYMPTOMS:
  9.  
  10.     1.  Applications hang the system when doing common functions like
  11.         saving a file, printing, or importing data from another
  12.         application.
  13.     2.  Out of memory errors occur.
  14.     3.  Applications appear to start but return to the icon.
  15.     4.  Various error messages occur but they seem unrelated to the
  16.         function in process.
  17.  
  18.     SUMMARY OF RESOLUTION:
  19.  
  20.     1.  OS/2 Supportline has a file available on SENDFAX (#603) or on
  21.         FAXLIST (DOSSET) with a complete description of most available
  22.         settings.
  23.     2.  All applications will vary in some settings but represented
  24.         below are the most common for optimal performance.

  26.     DETAILS OF RESOLUTION:
  27.  
  28.     1.  Refer to pgs 185-186 of OS/2 2.1: Using the Operating System
  29.         technical manual for procedures on going to the Settings page
  30.         for a program object. Page 200 describes the WIN-OS/2 settings.
  31.     2.  Once in the WIN-OS/2 settings (with settings listed in left
  32.         box), click on Help button.
  33.     3.  Scroll to Related Information.
  34.     4.  Double-click on DOS and WIN-OS/2 Settings.
  35.         From the different groups, select the following.

  37.     5.  DOS memory settings:
  38.         DOS_HIGH            =   On
  39.         DOS_UMB             =   On
  40.         EMS_MEMORY_LIMIT    =   0 or 2048
  41.         DPMI_MEMORY_LIMIT   =   64
  42.         XMS_MEMORY_LIMIT    =   4-10Mb
  43.  
  44.     6.  DOS video settings:
  45.         VIDEO_FASTPASTE         =   On
  46.         VIDEO_WINDOW_REFRESH    =   5
  47.  
  48.     7.  Other DOS settings:
  49.         HW_ROM_TO_RAM       =   On
  50.         DOS FILES           =   50 or more
  51.         IDLE_SECONDS        =   Max (60)
  52.         IDLE_SENSITIVITY    =   Max (100)
  53.  
  54.     9.  Once these are set, click on Save radio button.
  55.  
  56.     10. Exit from program's settings.

  59.     On page 200 you will also find instructions how to change
  60.     the Win-Run-Mode, via WINOS2 Full Screen Settings in Command
  61.     Prompt Folder, from Standard to Enhanced Mode.
