TRAP 0002 information 8/12/94
File:TRAP2.fax 4/20/94
TITLE: TRAP0002 RUNNING OS/2 1.3 AND OS/1 2.X
DESCRIPTION OF SYMPTOMS: A Trap 2 is a Non-Maskable
Interrupt (NMI), which is a hardware error usually related
to memory. OS/2 2.x is particular about the kind of memory
it uses, because it is a 32 bit operating system. The 32
bit operating system takes data in 32 bit words and can
sometimes cause a timing problem. DOS does not stress
memory like a 32 bit operating system such as OS/2 does.
For example, the DOS operating system uses 1mb of low
memory, while the OS/2 operating system is loaded into high
memory, which has never been stressed by a "16 bit"
operating system. Also DOS is a single-task operating
system while OS/2 is a multi-tasking operating system.
DETAILS OF RESOLUTION: If you are experiencing a Trap 2
check the following:
1. The memory is all the same speed, NO MISSMATCHED MEMORY
SIMMS. (ie. all 70, or all 80, or all 90 nanoseconds,
etc.) To ensure they are all the same speed, please look
on the memory chip in the system for the speed.
2. The memory is from all the SAME MANUFACTURER. If the
memory is produced by different manufacturers one SIMM may
be produced at 70 nanoseconds and another may be produced
at 69.5 or 70.5 nanoseconds. Since OS/2 is a 32 bit
operating system it will recognize this difference and will
cause the system to trap. NOTE: If the manufacturers are
different, but the SIMMs are produced at the same EXACT
speed this will not cause the system to fail.
3. The memory must be from the same "CLASS". For example,
1X9 SIMMs cannot be mixed with 1X3. NOTE: 1X9 SIMMs seem
to me more reliable than 1X3 SIMMs running OS/2.
4. All of the memory must be GOOD. You can run a memory
check program on the system, but keep in mind these
programs are not always accurate when tested under OS/2.
The most reliable way to check for defective memory is to
take some of the memory out to see if the traps still
occur. For example, if you have 16mb in 4mb banks, take
one bank out at a time to see if the system still fails.
5. DISABLE EXTERNAL CACHE in the CMOS settings. The most
common Trap 2 errors are caused from memory, however other
hardware failures can cause Trap 2's (ie. System Board,
Micro Channel Adapter, memory expansion board, etc). A
diagnostics test can be run on the system to help determine
the cause of the Trap 2. A diagnostics disk is a disk that
contains a hardware check program. - MICRO CHANNEL SYSTEM
(MCA) - For MCA Systems this disk can be obtained from your
hardware vendor or Marketing Representative.
- INDUSTRY STANDARD ARCHITECTURE SYSTEM (ISA) - For ISA
Systems refer to your hardware manual that came with your
system. NOTE: A trap 2 is 99.999% of the time a hardware
error. If none of the above help in determining the cause
of the Trap 2, please contact your hardware vendor for
further support.
