Hangs in OS/2 General Information and PD 8/12/94
File:HANGS.fax 4/20/94
TITLE: INTERMITTENT HANGS RUNNING OS/2 1.3 AND OS/2 2.X
DESCRIPTION OF SYMPTOMS/DETAILS OF RESOLUTION:
Intermittent hangs can be caused for many reasons. To help
determine where the system is failing please review the following:
A. If the system only hangs when running a DOS or WINDOWS program
the hang is probably caused from an application error. Please
read the following to determine the cause of the problem.
1. If you are running the application from an icon, will the
system hang if you run it from the command prompt? If so, the
icon may be corrupt. Delete the icon and remigrate it or
create it from the program template.
2. Can you press ctrl-esc to get out of the hang? If not, can you
press ctrl, alt, del to reboot or do you have to turn the
system off? If you can press ctrl-esc to get out of the hang,
it is an application hang and not a system hang, contact DOS or
WINDOWS support at 800-992-4777.
3. Is it specific to certain applications or do all of the
applications hang? If it is specific to certain applications
try changing some of the following settings:
A. DPMI_MEMORY_LIMIT to 64
B. DOS_RMSIZE to 624
C. HW_ROM_TO_RAM to ON
D. HW_TIMER to ON (games or timing-sensitive applications)
E. IDLE_SECONDS to 60
F. IDLE_SENSITIVITY to 100
G. EMS_MEMORY_LIMIT (increase or decrease depending on the
applications needs)
H. XMS_MEMORY_LIMIT (increase or decrease depending on the
applications needs)
I. INT_DURING_IO to ON (Multimedia Applications and other DOS
Applications)
NOTE: These are general settings and may affect each application
differently. If the above information does not fix the
problem please contact OS/2 Support at 800-992-4777 and
ask for the specific application group (DOS or WINDOWS).
B. If the entire system is randomly hanging read the following:
1. Run diagnostics to see if any of the hardware is defective or
loose. A diagnostics disk is a disk that contains a
hardware check program.
- MICRO CHANNEL SYSTEM (MCA) - For MCA Systems this disk can be
obtained from your hardware vendor or Marketing Representative.
- INDUSTRY STANDARD ARCHITECTURE SYSTEM (ISA) - For ISA Systems
refer to your hardware manual that came with your system.
2. Add to the second line of the config.sys
SET SHELLEXCEPTIONHANDLER=OFF. This may produce an error
message to the workplace shell when the system hangs.
3. Check IRQ's and comm ports. The "AT-BUS" can not share IRQ's,
Addressing or DMA, and it can not skip comm port settings.
4. When OS/2 boots up it will open all applications that were
previously running in OS/2. If the workplace shell is
displayed on boot up and a previously opened application causes
the system to hang do the following:
Pg 2
A. Add SET RESTARTOBJECTS=NO in the config.sys. This will
allow your system to boot up without restarting any
applications that were running under OS/2 when you shutdown
or turned off the system.
* If you have DOS on your system and OS/2 is using the Fat
File System, use a DOS bootable or boot into DOS to edit the
config.sys with the above statement.
* If you do not have DOS on your system:
-Boot using the Installation diskette
-Insert diskette 1 when prompted
-Press esc when the welcome screen is displayed
(this will give you an A:\)
-Type C: then enter (if OS/2 resides on a different drive
enter that drive letter and press enter)
-Type COPY CONFIG.SYS CONFIG.BAD (this is to back up the
config.sys, if a config.bad already exists use a different
extention)
-Type ECHO SET RESTARTOBJECTS=NO >> CONFIG.SYS
(this will add the line to the config.sys file)
B. Another way to bring up the desktop without any applications
opening is to hold down CTRL, SHIFT, and F1 after the system
loads the config.sys. If you hear a beeping noise lift your
fingers off the keys and then hold them back down. This
procedure, however, may not be as full proof as adding the
statement SET RESTARTOBJECTS=NO to the config.sys.
NOTE: If none of the above suggestions help please contact OS\2
Support at 800-992-4777 and ask for the HANG TRAP Group
for further Support.
