  3.        TITLE:  PROBLEMS LOADING SVGA SUPPORT W/ THE CIRRUS LOGIC
  4.        5422, 5424, 5426, AND/OR 5428 CHIPSETS.
  5.  
  6.        DESCRIPTION OF SYMPTOMS:
  7.  
  8.        OS/2 will not allow svga installation for any of the above
  9.        chipsets because the operating system is unable to identify
  10.        the chipset properly.
  11.  
  12.        SUMMARY OF RESOLUTION:
  13.  
  14.        Obtain the s3-16m dsk file from the BBS and apply the patch
  15.        to the system w/ the problem.  Then reinstall the display
  16.        drivers and now OS2 will properly identify the chip.
  17.  
  18.        DETAILS OF RESOLUTION:
  19.  
  20.        I. Obtain s3-16m.dsk 1. Download s3-16m.dsk from the BBS,
  21.        CompuServe, or the internet.  You will also need to
  22.        download the file ldf.com.  2. To unpack s3-16m.dsk type:
  23.        ldf s3-16m.dsk 3. That will unpack loaddskf.exe and
  24.        s3-16m.dsk so you will need to unpack s3-16m.dsk again
  25.        using loaddskf.exe.  This time when you use loaddskf.exe
  26.        specify a destination to unpack.  You can either unpack to
  27.        the A:  drive to diskette or put on the hard drive.  For
  28.        Example:

  30.        loaddskf s3-16m.dsk a:  (This will unpack to diskette)
  31.        loaddsdf s3-16m.dsk c:\s3 (This will unpack to a directory
  32.        called s3)
  33.  
  34.        4. If you do not have the means to download with then you
  35.        can order s3-16m.dsk by calling 1-800-3ibm-os2.  There will
  36.        be a small fee for shipping and handling and the diskette
  37.        cost.
  38.  
  39.        II.  If you have OS/2 2.1 GA 1. Follow the directions above
  40.        to obtain and unpack the s3-16m.dsk file.  2. Make sure the
  41.        system is in vga to start.  To verify, go to an OS2 session
  42.        and from the root dir type:  "e config.sys" and press
  43.        enter.  The video statements should read:

  45.        DEVINFO=SCR,VGA, C:\OS2\VIOTBL.DCP SET
  46.        VIDEO_DEVICES=VIO_VGA SET VIO_VGA=DEVICE(BVHVGA)
  47.        DEVICE=C:\OS2\MDOS\VSVGA.SYS
  48.  
  49.        NOTE:  In the last line use VSVGA.SYS not VVGA.SYS
  50.  
  51.        3. Change to the OS2 directory and delete any of the following
  52.        files if they exist:

  54.        SVGADATA.PMI SVGADATA.ERR SVGATMP.BAT SVGA.SAV
  55.  
  56.        4. Shutdown and reboot the system.  Make sure the system
  57.        boots to vga.  5. Run the following command from where ever
  58.        you unpacked the s3-16m.dsk files to.  For example, if you
  59.        unpacked to diskette you would change to the A:  drive and
  60.        type:

  62.        s3inst a:  c:
  63.  
  64.        If you unpacked the files to a directory called s3 off of
  65.        the root you will need change to that dir and type:
  66.  
  67.        s3inst c:\s3 c:
  68.  
  69.        6. Change to the OS2 directory and type:
  70.  
  71.        UNPACK A:  BUNDLE <enter>
  72.  
  73.        note:  you may have to use unpack2 depending on which
  74.        compression of OS2 you are using.
  75.  
  76.        7. Shutdown and reboot the system.  8. Open a DOS
  77.        fullscreen and type "svga on" and exit the session.  9.
  78.        Open an OS2 session and run "dspinstl" to install svga.  DO
  79.        NOT REBOOT WHEN PROMPTED!
  80.  
  81.        NOTE:  Do not choose the s3 when installing.  You are only
  82.        using the patch that comes w/ s3-16m.dsk.  DSPINSTL should
  83.        automatically detect your cirrus chip after the patch has
  84.        been applied.

  86.        10.  Open DOS fullscreen and run "svga on".  11.  Shutdown
  87.        and reboot.

  89.        III.  OS/2 for Windows 1. Follow steps 1 through 8. 2. Open
  90.        the OS/2 system folder, then system setup, and then start
  91.        selective install from the icon.  3. Choose the primary
  92.        display and press "ok".  At the next screen that appears
  93.        select "svga" and then press "ok".  You will be returned
  94.        the previous screen where you then press "ok".  Press the
  95.        install button at the bottom of the next screen and follow
  96.        the prompts to complete selective install.  DO NOT SHUTDOWN
  97.        WHEN PROMPTED!  4. Open a DOS full screen session and run
  98.        "svga on".  5. Exit DOS to shutdown and reboot.

  101.        We have assumed you installed OS2 on the c drive so if you
  102.        installed OS2 elsewhere adjust accordingly.
