  1. Check disk procedure for all LAN systems        2/16/94
  2.  
  3. CHKDSK FOR IBM OS/2 LAN SERVER OR IBM OS/2 LAN REQUESTER
  4.  
  5. DESCRIPTION OF SYMPTOMS
  6.     1.  The server or workstation had to be restarted without
  7.         doing a Shutdown.
  8.     2.  The system took a power hit.
  9.     3.  The server or workstation has HPFS or 386 HPFS and is
  10.         getting intermittent errors or traps.
  11.     4.  One or more of the following error messages was received
  12.         or was in the NET ERROR log:
  13.         a.  NET2184
  14.         b.  NET3054
  15.         c.  NET3055
  16.         d.  NET3056
  17.         e.  NET8002
  18.         f.  SYS0005
  19.         g.  TRAP
  20.     5.  Suspected file corruption.
  21.  
  22. SUMMARY OF RESOLUTION
  23.     Run CHKDSK from diskette on the failing workstation.
  24.  
  25. DETAILS OF RESOLUTION
  26.     1.  If the workstation is currently started, invoke a shutdown
  27.         from the Desktop.
  28.  
  29.     2.  Select one of the following (a or b):
  30.  
  31.         a.  If the file system of the failing workstation is
  32.             386 HPFS, insert the first 386 HPFS Boot Diskette
  33.             into Drive A:.
  34.  
  35.             NOTE:  If the 386 HPFS Boot Diskettes are not available,
  36.             do the following:
  37.  
  38.             1)  Create the 386 HPFS Boot Diskettes as described in
  39.                 the "IBM OS/2 LAN Server Network Administrator
  40.                 Reference Volume 3:  Network Administrator Tasks":

  45.                 OTHER CONSIDERATIONS:
  46.  
  47.                 a)  If the system is LAN Server Version 3.0
  48.                     and Fault Tolerance is installed, the 386
  49.                     HPFS Boot Diskettes require additional
  50.                     customizing in order to properly update
  51.                     files on partitions which are mirrored.
  52.  
  53.                     Follow the instructions in the .INF file
  54.                     (information file) for IP07001, the LAN
  55.                     Server Version 3.0 SelectPak, "Adding
  56.                     Fault Tolerance to 386 HPFS Standalone
  57.                     Boot Diskette", then continue with Step 2.
  58.  
  59.                 b)  If the base operating system is OS/2 2.0,
  60.                     copy UHPFS.DLL to the same diskette as
  61.                     CHKDSK.COM.  (Both files are required to
  62.                     execute CHKDSK.)
  63.  
  64.                 c)  If the base operating system is OS/2 2.1,
  65.                     prior to running MAKEDISK erase the
  66.                     the BUNDLE file from the 386 HPFS Boot
  67.                     Diskette #2; otherwise, there will not
  68.                     be enough room for MAKEDISK to complete.
  69.                     (DO NOT ERASE THE BUNDLE FILE FROM THE
  70.                     ORIGINAL OS/2 INSTALLATION DISKETTES.)
  71.  
  72.             2)  Insert the first 386 HPFS Boot Diskette into
  73.                 Drive A:.
  74.  
  75.         b.  If the file system of the failing drive is HPFS or
  76.             FAT, insert the OS/2 Installation Diskette into Drive A:.
  77.  
  78.     3.  Restart the workstation.
  79.  
  80.     4.  Select one of the following (a or b):
  81.  
  82.         a.  If the workstation is installed with Extended Edition
  83.             Version 1.3:
  84.             1)  When the logo displays and ESC is selectable,
  85.                 press ESC.  The A: prompt will be displayed.
  86.             2)  Remove the Installation Diskette and insert
  87.                 Disk 1.
  88.  
  89.         b.  If the workstation is installed with OS/2 Version 2.x:
  90.             1)  Follow the prompts to the "Welcome to OS/2"
  91.                 screen.
  92.             2)  Press ESC.  The A: prompt will be displayed.
  93.             d)  Remove the diskette currently in the drive and
  94.                 insert the diskette with CHKDSK on it.
  95.  
  96.     5.  Execute CHKDSK.  At the prompt, type
  97.  
  98.             CHKDSK d: /F
  99.             where d: = the drive to be CHKDSK'd
  100.             Example:  CHKDSK D: /F
  101.  
  102.     6.  CHKDSK should be run on all partitions.
