CHKDSK FOR IBM OS/2 LAN SERVER OR IBM OS/2 LAN REQUESTER
DESCRIPTION OF SYMPTOMS
1. The server or workstation had to be restarted without
doing a Shutdown.
2. The system took a power hit.
3. The server or workstation has HPFS or 386 HPFS and is
getting intermittent errors or traps.
4. One or more of the following error messages was received
or was in the NET ERROR log:
a. NET2184
b. NET3054
c. NET3055
d. NET3056
e. NET8002
f. SYS0005
g. TRAP
5. Suspected file corruption.
SUMMARY OF RESOLUTION
Run CHKDSK from diskette on the failing workstation.
DETAILS OF RESOLUTION
1. If the workstation is currently started, invoke a shutdown
from the Desktop.
2. Select one of the following (a or b):
a. If the file system of the failing workstation is
386 HPFS, insert the first 386 HPFS Boot Diskette
into Drive A:.
NOTE: If the 386 HPFS Boot Diskettes are not available,
do the following:
1) Create the 386 HPFS Boot Diskettes as described in
the "IBM OS/2 LAN Server Network Administrator
Reference Volume 3: Network Administrator Tasks":
Version 2.0, Page C-14
Version 3.0, Page C-25
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS:
a) If the system is LAN Server Version 3.0
and Fault Tolerance is installed, the 386
HPFS Boot Diskettes require additional
customizing in order to properly update
files on partitions which are mirrored.
Follow the instructions in the .INF file
(information file) for IP07001, the LAN
Server Version 3.0 SelectPak, "Adding
Fault Tolerance to 386 HPFS Standalone
Boot Diskette", then continue with Step 2.
b) If the base operating system is OS/2 2.0,
copy UHPFS.DLL to the same diskette as
CHKDSK.COM. (Both files are required to
execute CHKDSK.)
c) If the base operating system is OS/2 2.1,
prior to running MAKEDISK erase the
the BUNDLE file from the 386 HPFS Boot
Diskette #2; otherwise, there will not
be enough room for MAKEDISK to complete.
(DO NOT ERASE THE BUNDLE FILE FROM THE
ORIGINAL OS/2 INSTALLATION DISKETTES.)
2) Insert the first 386 HPFS Boot Diskette into
Drive A:.
b. If the file system of the failing drive is HPFS or
FAT, insert the OS/2 Installation Diskette into Drive A:.
3. Restart the workstation.
4. Select one of the following (a or b):
a. If the workstation is installed with Extended Edition
Version 1.3:
1) When the logo displays and ESC is selectable,
press ESC. The A: prompt will be displayed.
2) Remove the Installation Diskette and insert
Disk 1.
b. If the workstation is installed with OS/2 Version 2.x:
1) Follow the prompts to the "Welcome to OS/2"
screen.
2) Press ESC. The A: prompt will be displayed.
d) Remove the diskette currently in the drive and
insert the diskette with CHKDSK on it.
5. Execute CHKDSK. At the prompt, type
CHKDSK d: /F
where d: = the drive to be CHKDSK'd
Example: CHKDSK D: /F
6. CHKDSK should be run on all partitions.
