TITLE: 940127 OS/2 FOR WINDOWS SNIFFER WORKAROUND -(NO PROMPT FOR
MS-WINDOWS DISKETTES, OR NOT WIN-OS/2 SUPPORT)
DESCRIPTION OF SYMPTOMS:
If installing OS/2 for Windows (FERENGI) and there's either:
1. No error stating that Windows is NOT on the system, or
2. No prompt for Windows diskettes during install, or
3. Install completes and there's no WIN-OS/2 support - it
won't start, or
4. No option for install of WIN-OS/2 support is available in
Selective Install.
SUMMARY OF RESOLUTION:
1. WIN.INI, SYSTEM.INI, PROGMAN.INI and CONTROL.INI need to
be restored per the procedures below.
2. Run Selective Install.
DETAILS OF RESOLUTION:
1. From the OS/2 desktop, launch an OS/2 Window.
2. Change to the Windows directory at the {x:\} prompt,
where x is the drive on which Windows is located, by typing:
CD WINDOWS then hit <Enter>
3. Start the System Editor (E.EXE) and bring up the WIN.INI
by typing: E WIN.INI then hit <Enter>
4. If the message Embedded Null Characters is returned,
select Continue Loading File.
5. Make sure the following section headings are present
(note that the { } are really square brackets and the headings
aren't case sensitive):
{Windows}
{Desktop}
6. If the headings are present, save the file. If no type is
selected, select Type, then Plain Text, then Set.
7. If they are missing restore WIN.INI from a backup
diskette or system, or unpack it from the Windows diskette.
8. From within the System Editor bring up SYSTEM.INI by
selecting File, Open, then typing SYSTEM.INI in the Open
Filename box.
9. Repeat steps 5 - 7 this time looking for:

{Boot}
{Keyboard}
10. Next, step 8 with PROGMAN.INI, then repeat steps 5-7
looking for:
{Settings}
{Boot}
11. Repeat with CONTROL.INI, checking for:
{Current}
{ColorSchemes}
12. After all the new IN's have been saved, exit from System
Editor and the OS/2 Window.
13. Go to OS/2 System, System Setup, then Selective Install.
14. Click on OK at System Configuration screen.
15. Selective Install of WIN-OS/2 support should be
available.
16. Complete Selective Install of WIN-OS/2 support,
selecting only Configure current desktop at Advanced
Options screen.
