Trident Video Adapters 6/28/94
File:TRIDENT.FAX
TRIDENT VIDEO CARDS
TRIDENT high resolution video adapters based on 8900B and 8900C chipsets.
If video synch problems exist in an OS/2 full screen session or desktop
but go away temporarily after a DOS full screen session is entered, make
sure that you have executed SVGA ON from a DOS full screen session and
performed a shutdown. Prior to executing g this command, search for a file
\OS2\SVGDATA.PMI. If the file exists, delete it and regenerate it by
executing SVGA ON from a DOS command prompt. Some monitors cannot sync
under default video parameter settings. Some can sync but the picture s
shifted to one side of the screen. Other monitors support high refresh
rates, that reduces flickering (like 70 Hz vertical frequency). To get
the best display result, you may want to go through the following
procedures to adjust video parameters.
. Boot OS/2 with the default DISPLAY.DLL (640x480-16).
. Use the TVGACRTC.EXE utility (on TVGA Driver/Utility Diskettes, also
available from Trident BBS) under OS/2 DOS FULL SCREEN.. It will
generate TVGACRTC.SYS file and insert a line
DEVICE=path\TVGACRTC.SYS in the CONFIG.SYS.
. Shutdown OS/2 and reboot the system.
. Remove \OS2\SVGADATA.PMI file if it exists.
. Open a DOS full screen and run SVGA ON. This will generate a
"corrected" .PMI file.
. Remove DEVICE=TVGACRTC.SYS statement from CONFIG.SYS
. Shutdown OS/2 and boot again.
SVGDATA.PMI file contains the register information for video modes
supported by your adapter and is used by two drivers: BSVHSVGA.DLL in
OS/2 full screen and by VSVGA.SYS in DOS full screen. Correct video
driver statements in the CONFIG.SYS for SVGA support should be as
follows:
SET VIO_VGA=DEVICE(BVHVGA, BVHSVGA)
DEVICE=x:\OS2\MDOS\VSVGA.SYS where x is your OS/2 system drive letter.
If you have a problem with 8900B when opening a DOS full screen, try the
Trident fix 8900BFIX. This is a temporary solution and might not fix your
specific problem. Trident is working on newer VSVGA.SYS to fix it. You
may obtain this fix from Trident's BBS.
If you have intermittent video problems using DOS full screen session or
get error SYS3176 when opening DOS session, set DOS settings for that
icon as follows:
HW_ROM_TO_RAM to ON,
DOS_RMSIZE to 624.
Settings screen can be reached by clicking with the right mouse button
over the icon, selecting "Open settings" and going to the "Session" page
in the notebook.
General considerations
Our PM desktop device driver supports only 640x480x16 mode (pure VGA).
SVGA support is intended to provide higher resolution modes for DOS and
VIO applications only! Trident has developed a number of different
high-resolution PM display drivers. They are available from Trident's
BBS. If you have installed one and are experiencing problems with the
video, please contact Trident for technical support. You can obtain more
information on SVGA support from the README file ( in INFORMATION folder)
. In case that you are not interested in running high-resolution, you may
specify VGA support in your CONFIG.SYS. Basic VGA OS/2 support statements
in CONFIG.SYS VGA should be as follows:
SET VIO_VGA=DEVICE(BVHVGA)
DEVICE=x:\OS2\MDOS\VVGA.SYS where x is your OS/2 system drive letter.
If your desktop video is corrupted intermittently, run CHKDSK from an OS/2
command prompt to determine if any hard disk problems exist. If so, boot
OS/2 from the installation disk and press ESC when the first instruction
screen is displayed (you'll see this screen shortly after disk 1 has been
inserted). This will return you to an OS/2 A: command prompt. Run
CHKDSK C: /F to repair any inconsistencies on your drive. Replace C:
with your boot drive letter if yours is different.
Using HPFS on systems with less than 6MB RAM sometimes causes problems
that seem to be video related but are not (blank screen, missing icons,
etc...). You may want to consider a FAT file system for your hard drive
if you experience problems.
You should also check your motherboard BIOS date to determine if you will
need an update. AMI BIOS should be dated no earlier than 4/9/90 although
we recommend using AMI BIOS dated 5/9/91 or later. Phoenix BIOS should be
dated no earlier than 5/11/92 (t hey recently corrected a bug that was
causing problems with OS/2).
If your DOS application is using a video mode which is not supported by
our DOS full screen drivers, you may install all DOS video related drivers
and mode utilities in OS/2 CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT. You may also
specify DOS video driver DEVICE statement in DOS_DEVICE setting in the
DOS SETTINGS for the desired DOS session.
