Problems printing from OS/2 ? Check the Basics
If you are having problems printing to your network printer,
first check the way the printer was set up on your OS/2 desktop.
You should set up a printer on your desktop for the printer you
regularly use. A local printer icon is recommended.
The procedure for setting up workstation printing in OS/2
is performed from NetWare Tools for OS/2 and assumes that
you are already logged in to your file server. See the
Workstation Basics and Installation Document, Chapter 7.
o Choose the Novell icon from the desktop.
o Choose the NetWare Tools icon from the Novell Icon view
window on your desk top.
o Choose the Tools menu in the upper menu bar.
o Choose Printer Ports
The Printers window appears and a Printers option appears
in the menu bar.
o Choose a port by double clicking on it.
A capture window appears.
o Highlight a print queue name in the Printers/Queue list.
o Press the Capture button.
If the print queue you want to capture does not appear in the
Printers/Queue list, check to see if you are first attached to
the server containing this resource. Choose Server from the
Tools option to see the connected servers.
For more information about this tool, choose Help.
If you print from OS/2 and get garbage, the problem may be
that you are using the wrong printer driver.
See the Novell Print Server manual, page 49, for the command
format to Capture a printer port from the command line.

Problems printing from a DOS session? Check the Basics
If you have problems printing from a DOS session, first
verify that printing through OS/2 is working.
o Always load LPTDD.SYS. This can be done from each individual
DOS session by putting
<drive>&colon.\OS2\MDOS\LPTDD.SYS
in the DOS_DEVICE section of the DOS SETTINGS Notebook.
This can also be done for all sessions by putting
DEVICE=<drive>&colon.\OS2\MDOS\LPTDD.SYS
in the CONFIG.SYS.
o Make sure the OS/2 spooler is enabled. This is done by default
when you install a printer on the Workplace Shell. It can also
be enabled and disabled from the settings for Spooler in the
System Setup menu.
If you have a global session, capture from OS/2. If you have a
private session, use capture within this DOS session.
For example:
o Map to the public directory
o Enter CAPTURE? on the command line and you are given the
options for using CAPTURE.
o Enter the CAPTURE command with options to capture the
printer port you want.
For more information about CAPTURE see the Utilities section,
page 49, of the Novell Print Server manual.
For more information about workstation printing for DOS, see
Setting Up Workstation Printing for DOS, Chapter 7 in the
Workstation Basics and Installation manual.

Unable to print from WIN-OS/2 applications
If you have problems printing from a WIN-OS/2 session,
first verify that printing through OS/2 is working.
If you are having problems printing from WIN-OS/2, check
the way the printer is set up in WIN-OS/2 by following the
steps below.
If you print from WIN-OS/2 and get garbage but can print
from OS/2, it is likely the printer is not set up right
in WIN-OS/2.
If you have a global session, set up the capture from
OS/2; if you have a private session, set up the capture
from your private session
Before you start the set up for a WIN-OS/2 session make sure
that you have loaded LPTDD.SYS by checking the
following procedures:
o Load LPTDD.SYS. This can be done from each individual
DOS session by putting
<drive>&colon.\OS2\MDOS\LPTDD.SYS
in the DOS_DEVICE section of the DOS SETTINGS Notebook.
This can also be done for all sessions by putting
DEVICE=<drive>&colon.\OS2\MDOS\LPTDD.SYS
in the CONFIG.SYS.
Set up printing for WIN-OS/2 by performing the functions below:
If the setup for WIN-OS/2 is seamless, that is, if it is
executed by double clicking on an object from the desktop
or in a folder, then migrate Program Manager by:
o Opening the System Folder, then
o Open the System Setup window
o Select Migrate Applications
o Click on Windows Programs and pick the drive letter
with WIN-OS/2 installed
o De-select the applications you do not want on your desktop
When you press the Migrate button the program will add a folder
for WIN-OS/2 Groups and WIN-OS/2 Programs.
o Open a WIN-OS/2 session
o Open a WIN-OS/2 main
o Open the Control Panel
o Click on the Printers object
From the Installed Printers list pick
o LPT1.OS2, LPT2.OS2, or LPT3.OS2
If the printers do not show up on the list:
o Edit the WIN.INI file and look in the portsU section.
In the portsU section, you should have three printer
port entries that look like the following:
LPT1.OS2=
LPT2.OS2=
LPT3.OS2=
Type the printer ports in and save the file.
o Go back into the WIN-OS/2 Control Panel
o Add them to the port section
o Select a port to print to
Before you exit:
o Disable the print manager by clicking on the small box
and removing the "X"
o Go to the application you are trying to print from
and make sure that printing there is properly set up.
