DLR with Windows for Workgroups is not s 7/19/94
INTRODUCING WINDOWS FOR WORKGROUPS 3.1 WORKSTATIONS INTO AN
OS/2 LAN SERVER 2.0/3.0 DOMAIN
I. Windows for Workgroups Under OS/2 2.x
Windows for Workgroups (W4WG) is not currently supported
under OS/2 2.x. It requires Microsoft Windows 3.1
enhanced virtual device drivers (VxDs), which are not
supported under OS/2 2.x at this time.
Also, DOS LAN Requester (DLR) is not supported with W4WG.
If you want to run Windows for Workgroups 3.11 on a DOS
machine, you cannot have DLR code installed.
You can, however, use a Windows for Workgroups
workstation to access an OS/2 LAN Server (LS).
II. Setting Up the Windows for Workgroups 3.1 Server
1. Install Windows for Workgroups using the SETUP
program per the normal installation instructions.
2. When prompted for network configuration, enter the
Computer Name and Workgroup Name. The Computer
Name is W4WG's equivalent of LS's Machine Name
Make the Workgroup Name the Domain Name of your
LS domain.
3. When selecting Compatible Networks, select
Microsoft LAN Manager. Edit its Settings and input
your LS domain name under Domain Name.
4. After the installation is complete, edit the
SYSTEM.INI file in the \WINDOWS subdirectory on the
W4WG server. In the networkU section add or edit
the LMAnnounce line to read LMAnnounce=yes.
5. Reboot the system and start W4WG.
6. Add the W4WG server to the Machine Definitions in
the LAN Requester FSI. You should now be able to
share the resources on the W4WG server using File
Manager, as well as NET USE to other resources in
your LS domain.
III. NET8002 Attempting to Display W4WG Server Netnames
Through the LAN Requester Full Screen Interface
A NET8002 can occur when attempting to display W4WG
netnames through the LAN Requester FSI, while a NET VIEW
command will show you the W4WG servers without error.
This has been addressed in APAR IC05710, which should
also be available in a future LS 3.0 Service Pack.
IV. Using 32-Bit OS/2 LS Calls on a 16-Bit W4WG Server
You may run into problems performing 32-bit operations
on a 16-bit server, such as W4WG. One error is:
"SYS0050: The network request is not supported." The
Network Aware Shell (i.e. the Network Folder and Drives
object) is not supported with W4WG resources. In
addition, 32-bit applictions (e.g. Lotus 123 and AmiPro)
cannot have their data files located on a W4WG server.
All of this has been documented in APAR IC06253 and is
considered a permanent restriction.
