OSINATBU - ISA BUS WORK AROUND FOR INSTALLATION PROBLEMS
ON AT (ISA) BUS MACHINES
10/19/94
================================================================
ISA BUS WORK AROUND FOR INSTALLATION PROBLEMS
ON AT (ISA) BUS MACHINES
================================================================
Please Read Entire Document For Full Explanation of Procedures
----------------------------------------------------------------
CONFIGURATION: AT-bus (ISA) machine
non-SCSI disk controller (RLL, MFM, ESDI)
sometimes occurs on IDE controllers
SYMPTOMS: Very slow install
Very noisy hard disk during install
FDISK errors (may appear with red screen)
Very slow operation
For OEM systems, it is recommended to disable the following:
Turbo, Cache, and Shadow Rom
(Packard Bell system need not disable these features)
While installing ALL systems should disconnect devices such as:
Modem, tape backup, Network card, scanner, etc.
When installation is completed, ENABLE all features and
reconnect any devices you disconnected.
The hard disk controller may currently be incompatible. Be sure
you have the correct driver for OS/2. Call the vendor if
necessary.
If you need a new device driver, the statement needs
to be present in the CONFIG.SYS. It is suggested to make a
DISKCOPY of Diskette 1 and to add the BASEDEV=XXX.SYS (where XXX
is the name of the device driver) to the copy of Diskette 1, and
restart system. If this is not the scenerio for your system,
please follow instructions below.
BEFORE INSTALLATION:
1. Make a DISKCOPY of Diskette 1. Use DOS to edit the
CONFIG.SYS on Diskette 1 copy.
NOTE: Diskette 1 is first diskette AFTER Installation Disk.
Change the line: BASEDEV=IBM1S506.ADD
To read: REM BASEDEV=IBM1S506.ADD
This uses the IBMINT13.I13 driver. After installation
is completed, it is recommended to un-REM the driver. It
will then read as the originally statement.
================================================================
ALTERNATE PROCEDURE:
If you do not have access to DOS or do not have a DOS editor to
edit the CONFIG.SYS file on Diskette 1, try the following:
1. Insert the Installation Diskette into drive A:
2. Turn on the computer. If the computer is already on,
press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart system.
3. When you are prompted, remove the Installation Diskette and
insert Diskette 1.
4. Press Enter.
5. When the Welcome Screen appears, press Esc to display
the OS/2 command prompt.
6. With Diskette 1 in the drive, rename the IBM1S506.ADD to
IBM1S506.OLD by typing the following at the prompt:
RENAME IBM1S506.ADD IBM1S506.OLD
7. Continue with Step 2.

CHKDSK X:
(X: denotes the drive where OS/2 resides)
9. Enter the following commands:
RENAME X:\OS2\IBM1S506.ADD IBM1S506.XXX
COPY X:\OS2\IBMINT13.I13 C:\OS2\IBM1S506.ADD
10. Remove the diskette from the drive. Press Alt+Ctrl+Del to
restart the system. Installation resumes where it was.
================================================================
AFTER INSTALLATION:
1. Open the system folder on the desktop.
2. Open Command Prompts Folder.
