OS2 BACKUP and RESTORE 8/12/94
File: OSDIDKBK.FAX
OS2 BACKUP and RESTORE
2/1/94
This fax is for customers that would like to backup the OS/2
system 2.x and above and restore it. If it is to be restore
to a different drive letter some additional steps will need to
be taken.
For Example we will simulate Backing up C: and restoring to D:
Please follow the process step by step as follows:
A. BEFORE BACKING UP IF RESTORING TO A DIFFERENT DRIVE LETTER
(If your not restoring to a different drive letter you may
skip to section B.)
1. First edit the inisys.rc (found in \OS2 directory) file and
change the C: references to whatever drive letter you plan
to restore to in all places that it is referenced in that
file. This can be done easily using the epm editor and
the search and replace function.
For additional help on epm refer to the online help.
2. Now edit your ini.rc (found in \OS2 directory) file and make
the drive letter reference change for the IBMNULL DRIVER.
3. Then edit your config.sys on all references to C:
as documented in STEP 1. You will also find a backup
config.sys in the \OS2\INSTALL directory, this will need to
be modified also.
4. Edit the autoexec.bat file (found in root directory) in the
same manner. The startup.cmd file may also need to be
modified in the same manner (also found in the root
directory).
5. Then delete your printer icon(s).
B. BACKING UP THE SYSTEM....
1. Copy the BACKUP.EXE, RESTORE.EXE, CMD.EXE (\OS2 directory),
COMMAND.COM (\OS2\MDOS), UHPFS.DLL (\OS2\DLL to a floppy
diskette. The file SYSINSTX.COM can be found on the
INSTALLATION disk and must be copied to this diskette.
2. Next you will need to go the the root directory of the boot
drive you intend to backup (ie c:\). Issue the command:
"attrib os2* -r -s -h"
3. Now you are ready to backup your system. Shutdown and
boot off of your Installation disks/utility diskettes and
go to the a: prompt (hit the escape key on disk 1 when prompt
to hit enter to continue) put in diskette #2 and run:
"chkdsk x: /f:"
Note: x: is the drive you intend to backup.
4. Next enter the disk in the drive with the backup command on
it. Issue the backup command as denoted in your
documentation, and online help (typically
"backup c:\*.* a: /s "). If you need help on Backup type
"help backup" at an OS2 commandline. You will need
formatted disks (having for formatted disks increases the
chance of having a good backup).
C. RESTORING THE SYSTEM
1. After you have backed up your system it is now time to
restore it. Again boot off the floppy diskettes and go to the
a: prompt. Run chkdsk on the drive you intend to restore to
to make sure there are no filesystem errors. You are then
ready to restore, insert the disk with the restore command,
and issue the command. (typically RESTORE A:\*.* D: /S)
NOTE: the /s parameter must be used to restore files
to sub-directories.
2. Once the restore is complete you must change to the boot
drive root directory, and type "x:\attrib OS2* +r +h +s"
where x: is the boot drive.
3. Next insert the disk with sysinstx.com on it. From that
drive issue the command "sysinstx x:" where x: is the boot
drive.
4. Last make sure the drive is either added to the Boot
Manager,
or the partition is startable through FDISK. Note: only the
C: primary drives and Boot Manager can be startable.
5. Now copy CMD.EXE to the \OS2 directory, and COMMAND.COM to
the \OS2\MDOS directory.
At this point if you restored to the same drive letter you
RESTORATION is complete! If you restored to a different
drive letter you must do one last step.
1. After you have restored all files from all the diskettes
then you must do the following:
ERASE OS2.INI
ERASE OS2SYS.INI
MAKEINI OS2.INI INI.RC
MAKEINI OS2SYS.INI INISYS.RC
NOTE: Remember to change to your x:\OS2 directory before
running the above commands.
When you boot the machine the tutorial should come up first while the
desktop is creating itself. After you bootup and have a desktop
you can now go to the templates folder and create new printer
icons.
