  9. The following provides a list of software with information about
  10. the compatibility of specific programs, incompatible programs,
  11. improving program compatibility, windows applications programs,
  12. and running a specific version of DOS with OS/2 2.1. The
  13. information is version specific; later versions of the program
  14. might operate correctly.  Some program manufacturers already have
  15. resolved incompatibility issues and have fixes available.
  16.  
  17. Most DOS, Windows, and OS/2 programs run under OS/2 2.1 without
  18. any modification.  Please refer to the manual, 'Using the
  19. Operating System", pages 297 - 325, Chapter 26, Software Support.

  224. WINDOW APPLICATION COMPATIBILITY
  225.  
  226. The original WIN-OS/2 color scheme was added to the list of
  227. available color schemes in the WIN-OS/2 color panel.  If you
  228. change color schemes and would like to return to the original
  229. color schemes, select WIN-OS/2 Original.
  230.  
  231. The performance of Windows programs that use floating point
  232. operations can be improved by changing the WIN-OS/2 setting,
  233. WIN_RUN_MODE, to Enhanced Compatibility.  For more information
  234. about WIN-OS/2 settings, refer to the Master Help Index.
  235.  
  236. Windows scanning programs should be run in a WIN-OS/2 full screen
  237. session to avoid video corruption.
  238.  
  239. To ensure the integrity of 16-color bit maps on SVGA, XGA, and
  240. 8514 systems, run Microsoft Paint Brush in a WIN-OS/2 full screen
  241. session.
  242.  
  243. Some messages encountered in a WIN-OS/2 window session request
  244. that you select either Ignore or Close, however the only options
  245. are Ignore and OS.  Select OK instead of Close.
  246.  
  247. If you are using a WIN-OS/2 window or full screen session, an
  248. OS/2 Presentation Manager session, and a DOS full screen session,
  249. ALT+ESC might not sequence through all of the windows correctly.
  250. ALT+ESC might switch to the WIN-OS/2 session every other time or
  251. the DOS full screen session might never be displayed.  To avoid
  252. this problem, press CTRL+ESC or press mouse buttons 1 and 2 at
  253. the same time to display the Window List then select the desired
  254. session.
  255.  
  256. If you are in a full screen WIN-OS/2 session and you encounter a
  257. problem where transparent desktop icons appear over open windows,
  258. minimize or maximize the window to force repainting.
  259.  
  260. The Copy Disk option for the WIN-OS/2 File Manager does not
  261. prompt for a target diskette.  Use the DISKCOPY command in either
  262. a DOS or OS/2 command prompt session instead.
  263.  
  264. During installation of the Windows 3.1 SDK, a message is
  265. displayed stating that the installation program cannot find
  266. KRNL286.EXE OR KRNL386.EXE.  Ignore the message and continue
  267. installation.  The SDK will function normally.
  268.  
  269. If you are using the Winsleuth Gold hardware diagnostics program:
  270. 1.  Do not run Chip test (RAM test program).  Chip test attempts
  271.     to lock hardware interrupts.  OS/2 2.11 Special Edition does
  272.     not allow programs to lock hardware interrupts.
  273. 2.  When the video mode hardware test switches from character to
  274.     graphics mode, a "suspended" message might appear.  If the
  275.     message appears, Select full-screen from the Sessions System
  276.     menu.  Testing will resume.

  280. WINDOWS APPLICATION NOTES
  281.

  283.     Run in a WIN-OS/2 full screen session

  285. Ami Pro 2.0 and 3.0
  286.     Equation symbols may be incorrect after some printer drivers
  287.     are installed.  These printer drivers may be a problem:

  293. ATM Fonts
  294.     WIN-OS/2 includes ATM fonts Version 2.5.  If you were using a
  295.     previous version of ATM fonts with your Windows programs, you
  296.     can upgrade to the new ATM fonts provided by WIN-OS/2.  See
  297.     Chapter 19, "Adobe Type Manager for WIN-OS/2", in the OS/2
  298.     2.1 Using the Operating System.

  300. Borland Turbo and Pascal debugger
  301.     Run in a full screen session

  303. CorelDRAW 2.0
  304.     Install from a DOS or OS/2 session
  305.  
  306. Facelift Fonts
  307.     Modify the SYSTEM.INI file after the fonts are installed
  308.      A. Edit SYSTEM.INI file in directory where Windows reside
  309.      B. Change SDISPLAY.DRV= line to SDISPLAY.ORG=
  310.      C. Copy the DISPLAY.DRV= line to the next line in file.
  311.         Add an "S" to the beginning of the new (copied) line.
  312.      D. Change the FDISPLAY.DRV= line to FDISPLAY.ORG=
  313.      E. Copy the DISPLAY.DRV= line to the next line in file.
  314.         Add an "F" to the beginning of the new (copied) line.
  315.      F. Save and exit the file.
  316.      G. Restart WIN-OS/2.
  317.  
  318. FormBase 1.1
  319.     When you install FormBase, do not select to modify the
  320.     CONFIG.SYS file.  Modifying the CONFIG.SYS file damages the
  321.     integrity of the file and your system.
  322.  
  323. FoxPro 2.5
  324.     Install using a WIN-OS/2 Enhanced compatibility mode session,
  325.     but run in a WIN-OS/2 standard mode session.
  326.  
  327. FrameMaker
  328.     Use a mouse to select table calls.
  329.  
  330. Lotus Freelance Graphics
  331. 1. Run the tutorial in a WIN-OS/2 full screen session.
  332. 2. If you are using FreeLance in a WIN-OS/2 window, you may get
  333.    incorrect background color when viewing a thumbnail of a
  334.    template.  This will not affect the running of application.
  335.  
  336. Lotus Freelance Graphics 2.0
  337.     If you are running Lotus Freelance Graphics 2.0 on any
  338.     machine with an Intel 386 16Mhz, it is recommended that you
  339.     use a Math Coprocessor.
  340.  
  341. Lotus Improv 2.0 for Windows
  342.     Must be installed with WIN-OS/2 running in enhance mode, to
  343.     install and configure correctly.
  344.  
  345. Mathematica 2.2
  346.     Must be run in WIN-OS/2 window session.
  347.  
  348. Microsoft Windows Printing System
  349.     The OS/2 spooler must be disabled.  If using a parallel
  350.     printer, direct output to LPT1 instead of LPT1.OS2.
  351.  
  352. Norton Desktop 2.0
  353.     Run in a WIN-OS/2 full screen standard mode session.
  354.  
  355. Powerpoint 3.0
  356. 1. If displaying DROPBXV.PPT and GRIDWRVK.PPT demo slides in
  357.    640X480X256, you may see small horizontal line corruption.
  358. 2. If you are using a WIN-OS/2 window, you might get incorrect
  359.    background color when viewing a thumbnail of a template.  This
  360.    will not affect the running of the application.
  361.  
  362. Video for Windows
  363. 1. Run in a full screen session.
  364. 2. If you configure video animation to run full screen in Video
  365.    playback, Deselect Skip video frames if behind, to eliminate
  366.    any corruption of the video during play.
  367.  
  368. WindowWorks
  369.     Install in a WIN-OS/2 full screen session.
  370.  
  371. WinTach
  372.     Run this application in a WIN-OS/2 full screen session.
  373.  
  374.  
  375. DOS APPLICATION COMPATIBILITY
  376.  
  377. Use OS/2 system utilities.  DOS system utilities might not
  378. recognize the extended attributes associated with a file.
  379.  
  380. OS/2 provides integral disk caching and memory optimization
  381. functions.  Use of the equivalent functions that are provided
  382. with MS-DOS 6.0 is not necessary and may produce errors.
  383.  
  384. To display the DOS bar in a DOS full screen or window session,
  385. add $i to the PROMPT statement in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
  386.    EXAMPLE:      PROMPT $i$p$p
  387. Save the modified AUTOEXEC.BAT file.  Shutdown system, then
  388. restart system by pressing and holding CTRL+ALT, then press DEL.
  389.  
  390. If your application uses its own DOS Protect Mode Interface
  391. (DPMI), set DPMI_DOS_API DOS setting to ENABLED.  Example apps:
  392.              Microsoft C/C++ 7.0 Linker
  393.              Borland C
  394.              C++
  395.              Turbo C
  396.              Paradox
  397.   NOTE: If you are using Microsoft C/C++ 7.0 Linker, configure
  398. the program object's DOS_SETTING with DPMI_DOS_API=ENABLED.
  399. Also, modify the AUTOEXEC,BAT being used for the session so
  400. Microsoft \700\BIN directory is searched first.
  401.    EXAMPLE:
  402.     PATH X:\C700\BIN;\C:\OS2;c:\OS2\MDOS;C:\OS2\MDOS\WINOS2;C:;
  403.  
  404. It is not necessary to run SHARE.EXE in a DOS session.  OS/2's
  405. DOS emulation provides SHARE.EXE compatible to that which comes
  406. with DOS versions 5.X and 6.X.
  407.

  409. DOS APPLICATION NOTES
  410.  
  411. DOS Games
  412.     For performance reasons, play in a DOS full screen session.
  413.     Change DOS setting,VIDEO_8514A_XGA_IOTRAP to OFF.  For more
  414.     information about DOS settings, refer to Master Help index.
  415.  
  416. Fotoman
  417.     If you have problems running Fotoman, set the DOS
  418.     COM_DIRECT_ACCESS setting to ON.
  419.  
  420. Paradox V4.0
  421.     If you have problems running Paradox V4.0 change the DOS
  422.     setting DPMI_DOS_API = ENABLE
  423.  
  424. Wing Commander II
  425.     Set HW_TIMER to OFF
  426.  
  427. WordPerfect V6.0
  428.     If you have problems running Wordperfect V6.0 change the DOS
  429.     setting DOS_FILES = 99
  430.  
  431. Terminator game
  432.     Must use a joystick.
  433.  
  434. Maxis Sim City 2000 for DOS
  435.     Under the Program tab for the program object, set the
  436.     Optional Parameters to NO_MEM_CHK.  Under the Session Tab,
  437.     select DOS_SETTINGS button and set DPMI_MEMORY_LIMIT to 8.
  438.  
  439. Microsoft MSCDEX
  440.     Change the DOS INT_DURING_IO setting to ON.
  441.  
  442. Intel SatisFAXtion
  443.     Must be run in a specific DOS session, unless you do the
  444.     following prior to installing the program:
  445.     A. Make a copy of AUTOEXEC.BAT file and name it AUTOEXEC.FAX
  446.     B. Install the program.
  447.     C. Rename AUTOEXEC.BAT file FAX.BAT
  448.     D. Rename AUTOEXEC.FAX file AUTOEXEC.BAT
  449.     E. Make a program object for SatisFAXtion program.
  450.     F. Change value of DOS_AUTOEXEC setting for object to FAX.BAT
  451.     G. Save and exit the Settings notebook.
  452.  
  453.  
  454. OS/2 APPLICATION COMPATIBILITY
  455.  
  456. Closing OS/2 applications that use the hardware palette
  457. (typically picture viewers or sample graphic applications)
  458. occasionally causes a repaint problem on desktop.  If the
  459. windows do not repaint correctly, a refresh will restore the
  460. desktop, but any windows that are opened or moved will still
  461. have the problem.  Restarting system is the only way to
  462. completely correct the problem.
  463.  
  464. If you are using Lotus 123G for OS/2 or Lotus Freelance Graphics
  465. for OS/2, you may experience problems using large bit maps.  To
  466. correct this problem, you need to run the following utility prior
  467. to using these products with OS/2 2.11 Special Edition.
  468.     A. Change to appropriate Lotus directory that contains app:
  469.        EXAMPLE, Type,   CD\123G
  470.     B. Backup the LD2CORE.DLL file.
  471.        EXAMPLE, Type,   COPY LD2CORE.DLL LD2CORE.BAK
  472.     C. Run the update program.
  473.        Type,             LD2FIX
  474. The Lotus program is now updated.  Shutdown and restart your
  475. system for the changes to take effect.
  476.  
  477. Do not run an OS/2 screen save and a Windows screen saver, or
  478. multiple Windows screen savers at the same time.
  479.  
  480.  
  481. OS/2 APPLICATION NOTES
  482.  
  483. Communication Manager/2
  484.     When used with Host Graphics support (HGINST) you might
  485.     experience shutdown problems.  Ensure the following Graphical
  486.     Data Display Manager (GDDM) fixes are applied to host system:
  487.              UN36882 - MVS
  488.              UN38883 - VM/SP
  489.              UN38884 - VM/XA SP
  490.              UN38885 - DOS/VSE
  491.  
  492. CorelDRAW 2.5
  493.     At the end of CorelDRAW 2.5 installation, you may experience
  494.     problems, after selecting one of the View README options.
  495.     The View README options are "Yes and "No".
  496.  
  497.     If you select Yes, CorelDRAW will not run.  Icons will be
  498.     generated.  You will need to restart your system and recreate
  499.     each icon, using the Migrate Applications program.
  500.  
  501.     For information on the Migrate Applications program, refer to
  502.     OS/2 Using the Operating System.
  503.  
  504. Netview DM/2  (NVDM/2)
  505.     If you are using the CID method of installation, you will
  506.     need an updated version of the LAPSCID.DLL file.  This file
  507.     is available as LAPDLL.ZIP on the CompuServe OS2SUPPORT
  508.     forum, Lib #17 and the OS2BBS on TALKLINK.
  509.  
  510. Rumba/400 for OS/2
  511.     If you use RUMBA/400 for OS/2, you may have a more recent
  512.     version the MIRRORS.DLL file, located in the \OS2\DLL
  513.     directory.  The file currently shipped with OS/2 2.11 is from
  514.     Micrografix ToolKit Ver. 3.01, ship level A51 dated 11/16/93.
  515.     Before you begin installing this version of the operating
  516.     system, you should backup your current MIRRORS.DLL file.
  517.     After you install this version this version of the operating
  518.     system, you can replace the OS/2 2.11 level of MIRRORS.DLL
  519.     with the backed up copy you previously created.
  520.  
  521. WordPerfect 5.2
  522.     If this application is installed on your system and you
  523.     reinstall OS.2, it is recommended to do the following:
  524.     A. Change to appropriate WordPerfect directory
  525.     B. Type,   INSTALL /WPS
  526.        The WordPerfect application is now updated.  You need to
  527.        shutdown and restart system for changes to take effect.
  528.  
  529. IBM LAN Server 3.0 Remote Installation Program Load (RIPL)
  530.     An updated version from version 3.0 is needed to run with
  531.     OS/2 2.11 Special Edition.  Use diskette image that is
  532.     available as 21SERIPL.ZIP on CompuServe OS2SUPPORT forum,
  533.     Lib #17 and OS2BBS on TALKLINK to run RIPL with OS/2 2.11
  534.     Special Edition.
  535.  
  536. IBM LAN Server DLR 2.0, 3.0
  537.     When running WIN-OS2 in a VMboot environment, with DOS and
  538.     IBM LAN Server DOS LAN Requester 2.0 or 3.0, the logoff
  539.     option causes the WIN-OS/2 session to freeze.  This problem
  540.     occurs when network logon is performed prior to entering
