ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1. Introduction to PMPrep ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
PMPrep is a shareware uuencoder/uudecoder for the OS/2 Presentation Manager.
Multiple part files are supported as well as files which contain non-uuencoded
data such as mail-headers.
You would like to convert binary files to the uuencode format if you want to
transmit them via the Internet or other computer networks (eg. in emails or
news-postings). This avoids problems which may occur when transporting or
viewing your messages in binary format.
PMPrep features an easy to use yet powerful drag'n drop user interface and
utilizes multiple threads for best multitasking performance. PMPrep works on
OS/2 version 2.1 and above.
The user interface mainly consists of two directory listings (subsequently
called container) where you select the files you want to convert. Above these
containers are two list boxes where you can either enter a path name or select
a different drive to be displayed.
You can copy the pathname between the left and right entryfield via drag 'n
drop. The directory is then changed automatically after the drop.
You can change the proportions of the directory containers by dragging the
vertical gray bar, which divides the two containers, with mouse button 1 (the
left mouse button on most systems - depending on you configuration).
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2. What's new in version 2.1 ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
New in Version 2.1
You can now suspend, resume and abort individual conversions via a popup
menu. You display this popup menu with a right mouse click on the desired
progress window.
Enhanced drag 'n drop functionality. If you want the directory of the
left and right directory container to be the same, simply drag and drop
the path name from one drive listbox to the other. The directory is
changed automatically when you release the mouse button.
You can change the path names of the default directories in the Settings
Notebook in the same way.
You can specify the default directory for the directory containers on the
commandline. Additionally you can choose to always use the current
working directory as the default directory. Further information on this
feature is available in the section directory options.
Memory consumption is reduced by 30%
You can now change the priority of background processes used by PMPrep on
the miscellaneous page of the Settings notebook.
The window size and -position is now saved and restored between each
program start.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3. Installation ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Copy the file PMPrep.exe the help (.hlp and .inf) files and the resource files
(.dll) to a directory of your choice.
If you don't want to view the online help outside PMPrep (using the view
command) you can delete the .inf files.
If you want to start PMPrep from a directory other than the current directory
you need to include the path name where the .dll files reside in the LIBPATH
environment variable. See your OS/2 command reference for more information
about the LIBPATH. You also need to include the path name where the .hlp files
reside in the HELP environment variable.
Once you have chosen the language you want to use in PMPrep you can delete the
other language specific files (.dll and .hlp/.inf).
Please note that the first time PMPrep is started it creates a configuration
file (pmprep.ini) in the current directory. If you later start PMPrep the
pmprep.ini file is searched in the following directories:
The current directory
The \OS2 directory of your OS/2 boot drive
The directories specified in the PATH environment variable
The directory specified by the environment variable PMPREP_INI
If PMPrep can't find the ini-file you are asked if PMPrep shall create a new
one.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4. Getting started ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
To convert one or more files select the files to convert in one of the
containers. Drag and drop the selected files to the opposite container to start
the converting process. If you drop the files on a folder located in the
container, the output files are placed in that folder.
This container must be one of the two in PMPrep - you cannot drag the files to
a Workplace Shell container.
However, you can drop files on the shredder to delete them.
PMPrep automatically detects the type of the dropped files (either binary or
uuencoded).
UUEncoded files are decoded into their original binary format.
The way binary files are processed depends on the options you selected in the
settings notebook.
If you select more than one file, the files are processed in the order they are
listed in the container.
You can modify the order the files are listed in the directory container by
dragging a file and dropping it at the desired location in the same container.
A line indicates where the file will be inserted.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5. Menus ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This chapter describes the menu choices available in PMPrep.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.1. File menu ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This menu contains four items for using application functions.
Select one of the following items to get detailed information.
Convert
Delete
Refresh
Exit
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.1.1. Convert ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Converts the selected files.
The files can be of different types. I.e. there may be one uuencoded file and
two binary files.
The uuencoded file will be decoded and the two binary files will be uuencoded.
The resulting output files will be placed in the directory on which you dropped
the source-file.
After starting a convert process a progress window is displayed at the bottom
of the PMPrep window. This window displays the filename currently converted as
well as a progress indicator, percentage completed text and the output
filename.
You can change the proportion of the progress window the way you change the one
of the directory containers: Drag the horizontal gray bar, which separates the
progress window from the two directory containers, with mouse button 1 (the
left mouse button on most systems).
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.1.2. Refresh ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Rereads the current directory of both directory windows and updates the
directory list shown.
You would like to do this if you removed or copied files outside PMPrep.
PMPrep only keeps track of changes on the disk made from within PMPrep.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.1.3. Delete ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Deletes the selected files. Directories will not be deleted.
If you've selected the Confirm on file delete option on the Confirmations page
of the Settings notebook you are prompted to confirm the delete action.
If you select this menu item from the container popup-menu, the following
behaviour applies. This also is the standard Workplace Shell behaviour:
If you click on a single file to bring up the popup-menu, only that file will
be deleted. A box is drawn around the file to indicate which one will be
deleted.
If you click on a group of two or more selected files, all selected files in
the container will be deleted.
CAUTION:
If you select this menu item from the file-menu, instead of the container
popup-menu the seleted files in both, the left and the right, directory window
will be deleted.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.1.4. Exit ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Exits PMPrep.
Depending on the options selected on the Confirmations page of the Settings
notebook you are prompted to confirm this action.
See the Confirmations page of the Settings notebook for details.

is displayed in the two directory containers when you start PMPrep. You can
copy the pathname between the two entryfields via drag 'n drop.
Left directory name
You can enter the name of the left default directory here. This path name
is used for displaying the directory-contents in the left directory
container.
Change left directory
If you press this button a dialog is displayed for selecting a directory.
You can browse the directory structure in this dialog.

You can browse the directory structure in this dialog.
Use current working directory
When this checkbox is selected, the working directory is used as the
initial directory for the left and right directory container.
Aside from the options above you can specify the default directory on the
commandline. If you start PMPrep via a Workplace Shell object you would enter
the directory name in the Parameters entry field on the first page of the
program object's settings notebook. Otherwise, if you start PMPrep on the
commandline, you specify the directory name directly behind the program name.
I.e.
pmprep c:\
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 6.1.2. Confirmations ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
You can set the following confirmation options here.
Always confirm exit
You are prompted to confirm your choice everytime you exit PMPrep.
Confirm only if conversion active
You are only prompted for the confirmation if there are currently files
being converted.
Never confirm program exit
You will never be prompted to confirm exiting PMPrep.
Confirm on file delete
If this option is selected you are prompted to confirm file delete
operations.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 6.1.3. UUDecode options ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
With these options you can change the way PMPrep uudecodes files. The following
list describes the various control elements of this notbook page.
Confirm file-order
If you selected more than one encoded file you are prompted to verify that
the files are displayed in the right order. Click on file-order to get
more information about why the file-order is important.
Always overwrite files
If this option is selected, existing output files will be automatically
overwritten during uudecoding. Otherwise if the output file already exists
a dialog is displayed where you can enter a different file name or choose
to explicitly overwrite the file. Select Dialog file exists for more
information on this dialog.
Delete input-files after successfully uudecoding
Selecting this option causes PMPrep to automatically delete the input
(uuencoded) files after successfully uudecoding them.
Note: Successful in this case means that all encoded files were decoded
and written to the output file. If, when decoding multiple files,
the files aren't in the correct order the output file will be
corrupt. PMPrep can't detect this and will still delete the input
files.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 6.1.4. UUEncode options ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
With these options you can change the way PMPrep uuencodes files. Following is
a list describing the various control elements of this notebook page.
Prompt for file name
If this option is selected you are prompted to enter a new filename for
every output file generated during uuencoding. More than one output file
is generated when you enable the create multiple part output file option.
Use source file name
If you select this option PMPrep automatically generates the output
filenames. These filenames will consist of the filename of the original
file plus an extension which starts with 000.
If more than one output file is created, this extension is incremented by
one, i.e. the second file will have the extension 001.
Overwrite existing files
If this option is selected, existing output files will automatically be
overwritten. Otherwise if an output file already exists a dialog is
displayed where you can enter a different file name or choose to
explicitly overwrite the file. Select Dialog file exists for more
information on this dialog.
Create multiple part ouput files
If this option is enabled additional output files will be created if the
size specified in the entry field below is exceeded. If this option is not
selected the encoded data will be written to a single file.
Maximum part size in kbytes
If you enabled the create multiple part ouput files option you can enter
the maximum size of the output files here. You can also use the spin
buttons, located to the right of the entry field, to increase or decrease
the part size.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 6.1.5. Miscellaneous settings ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
On this notebook-page you can select the language you want to use in PMPrep as
well as the priority of background convert processes.
If you decide to use a high priority, be aware that other tasks will slow down
while converting files. On the other hand, if you choose a low priority, your
convert operations may take longer when doing much foreground work.
The default setting (normal priority) should suit most users needs.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 6.2. Product information dialog ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 12. Glossar ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Synonyms used in this document are described here.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 12.1. UUEncoding ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
A file conversion format which converts 8-bit binary files (i.e. the
PMPrep.exe) into 7-bit data files. This is done to avoid problems which may
occur when transporting or viewing your messages in 8-bit data format.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 12.2. UUDecoding ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The process of converting uuencoded files back to their original format. You
can't use a uuencoded file without uudecoding it first.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 12.3. Container ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
A user interface component which can contain several objects. For example the
Workplace-Shell uses containers to display the directories and files on your
harddisk. Your OS/2 desktop is a container, too.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 12.4. File order ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The file order of the selected files is important when a file is split into
multiple uuencoded files. If this is the case the files are decoded in the
order they are displayed in the directory container.
If the file order isn't correct, i.e. the third file is listed before the
second, the output file will be corrupt. You can change the file-order by
dragging a file with the mouse and dropping it at the desired location in the
same directory container. A line is drawn to indicate where the file will be
inserted when you drop it.
