ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4. Installation ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This section describes how to install LA Gopher on your system. Please select
the version you are installing from the list below:
o Registered version
o Shareware version
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4.1. Installing the Registered version ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
LA Gopher ships with an installation program. Insert the disk containing LA
Gopher and type INSTALL<Enter>
You will be prompted for a source drive\directory and a destination
drive\directory. Enter the correct parameters and click the "OK" button to
begin the installation. The "Cancel" button aborts the installation.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4.2. Installing the Shareware version ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
If you are installing the shareware version of LA Gopher you will not receive
the INSTALL program. To install this version, simply use an UNZIP program to
decompress the LA Gopher archive to the desired directory.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5. Starting LA Gopher ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
To start LA Gopher from the command line simply enter LAGOPHER [-arg1, -arg2,
... -argn]<Enter>. The program will then start by performing a connection to
the default gopher server.
If this is the first time LA Gopher has been executed, it will default to the
Gopher server at University of Minnesota (gopher.micro.umn.edu), which is where
the Gopher protocol first emerged. You can add your own servers as desired.
For more information on adding servers to LA Gopher's server list see Setting
up the server list
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 6. Command-line Parameters ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
There are 2 command-line parameters recognized by LA Times.
-s
Permits you to specify the server to connect to by default. The format of
this option is "-sgopher.micro.umn.edu" and is useful if you are running LA
Gopher from a desktop object.
-l
Enables debug data logging. The log file is used when reporting software
bugs to the author. If you experience a crash, rerun LA Gopher with the -l
option specified and attempt to reproduce the crash. If you can, send the
created LAGOPHER.LOG file to the author along with a description of the
problem. You should not use the option during normal use as it degrades
performance slightly.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 7. Setting Up LA Gopher ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This section describes the initial set up sequence for LA Gopher.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 7.1. Setting up the server list ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
LA Gopher supports connections to multiple servers through the LA Gopher Server
List dialog. This window can be displayed by selecting the "File/Connect"
option from the main menu. See Server List Window
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8. LA Gopher Basic Windows ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The main LA Gopher client window owns all other windows created by the program.
It consists of a main menu, and toolbar and a client area where all other
windows are displayed.
o Main Toolbar
The following is a list the basic windows provided by LA Gopher and a brief
description of their operation.
Gopher Page
Contains a list of all available Gopher information associated with the
subject displayed in the title bar of the window. This information is
generally made up of an icon indicating the type of information, and a text
subject to describe the object.
Document Page
Is used to display a document from a Gopher page. This document can be
edited, saved or printed for later reference.
Configuration Notebook
Permits you to change LA Gopher options dictating program operation.
Server Selection Window
Is used to control the list of server you connect to.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8.1. Gopher Pages ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
A gopher page is a window consisting of a menu, toolbar and a display area
which will typically show several items of information. You can double click
on any item in the display are to display more information, run one of the user
defined "viewers", or open another gopher page to show even more detailed
information.
All entries in the display area consist of a descriptive icon and a text
subject. The icon can be used to immediately identify the type of data for the
item - document, folder, binaries, sounds, etc.
You can also use the right mouse button to get additional information for many
items. This will display an edit windows showing information such as the file
size, format and type od application required to view this data.
Note however that not all servers have support for this additional information.
If you right click on an item which has no information, you will hear a short
tone acting as a warning.
Select one of the following for more information:
o Toolbar
o Icons
o Refresh
o View
o Search
o Bookmarks
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8.2. Document Window ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Document windows contain the text of an article you are currently reading. LA
Gopher can have as many document windows open as you like, limited only by
memory, and you are free to edit these windows and/or save them to disk.
Select one of the following for more information:
o Toolbar
o File
o Edit
o Search
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8.3. Configuration Notebook ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
LA Gopher uses a CUA compliant notebook control for all of its configuration.
The notebook currently contains two pages for configuration of general program
operation and data viewers.
o General Configuration
o File Type Configuration
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8.3.1. General Configuration ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The general configuration notebook page permit you to modify the way LA Gopher
and it's views are managed. This is done with the options listed below:
Remove Gopher pages after use
By default, LA Gopher keeps a copy of all gopher pages that it downloads.
This greatly enhances program and network performance at the cost of
increased disk space. Selecting this options forces LA Gopher not to keep
these files on your system. Use of the program with this option checked is
only recommended for systems with contraints on disk space.
Remove documents after use
By default, LA Gopher keeps a copy of all documents that it downloads. This
is done to enhances program and network performance but does require
additional disk space on your system. Since many documents in the
gophersphere can be quite large, you may want to select this checkbox to
reduce the disk overhead on your system.
Cascade Gopher pages
Selecting this checkbox will cause any gopher pages that are opened to be
cascaded on the LA Gopher client area. If you want to save some screen
real-estate, you can uncheck this box to have all gopher pages piled on on
top of each other.
Main Toolbar
Selecting this checkbox will enable the main toolbar. If you uncheck this
box, the main toolbar will not be displayed the next time you run LA
Gopher.
Gopher Page Toolbar
Selecting this checkbox will enable the toolbar for all Gopher pages. If
you uncheck this box, the toolbar will not be displayed the next time you
run open a gopher page
Document Toolbar
Selecting this checkbox will enable the document toolbar. If you uncheck
this box, the toolbar will not be displayed the next time you display a
document.
UUDECODE viewer
Enter the path name to the UUDECODE program of your choice. LA Gopher
includes a freeware UUDECODE, but you can sustitute your own.
Image viewer
Enter the path name to the image viewer of your choice. The GIF format is
typically used in the gophersphere, but the protocol supports all formats,
so make sure your viewer can handle several formats.
Video viewer
Enter the path name to the video viewer of you choice.
Sound player
Enter the path name to your audio player application.
Telnet viewer
Enter the path name to your TELENET client. By default this field is
loaded with "telnet" the text-based telnet client which ships with TCP/IP
TN3270 viewer
Enter the path name to your telnet 3270 application. By default this field
is loaded with the TN3270 program which ships with TCP/IP.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8.3.2. File Type Configuration ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
LA Gopher's file type configuration notebook page will permit you to set the
default file type for various types of data. This file type will be used
whenever a file is saved to you disk from the Gophersphere. For example GIF
files will default to *.GIF.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8.4. Server List Window ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The server dialog contains a combination list box which has an edit window
attached. The edit window will contain the currently selected default server.
If the list contains more than one server entry, you can select another server
as your default by choosing it from the list and pressing the button. This
will cause the main gopher page for that server to be displayed in the client
area.
If you would like to add an additional servers to the list, enter the servers'
names in the edit window and press the button. This will add the server to
the list.

around in the gophershere, and LA Gopher sets no limit on the number of
bookmarks you can have.
If you find yourself on a gopher page that you want to bookmark, select the
"Bookmark/Set bookmark" option from the menu to place this gopher page in your
bookmark list.
You can later return to this page by selecting "Bookmark/Goto bookmark" from
the menu, and selecting the desired bookmark entry from the list.
Should you wish to remove a bookmark from your list, select the
"Bookmark/Delete bookmark" menu item and select the desired bookmark from the
list then press the "Delete" button.
There is also a possibility that you want to add the server associated with the
current gopher page to your server list so you can connect to it at a later

The "Find next" option will step to the next piece of document text matching
the current search string.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Searching Phone Books ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This dialog permits you to set up a search query for a CSO phone book. Gopher
servers typically no longer use CSO phone books but there are still a number of
them in the Gophersphere to LA Gopher has support for them.
You can populate any of the fields in the query section with all or part of the
criteria on which you want your search to proceed. Once complete, the search
