IDENTD is a daemon which implements the TCP/IP proposed standard
IDENT user identification protocol. Identd operates by looking up
specific TCP/IP connections and returning the user name of the
process owning the connection.
Why you may need Identd:
Some IRC servers require you to run an Identd daemon on your terminal
to identify yourself to the remote terminal. This is a security
precaution, to prevent users from hacking their user id and loging into
the system without being clearly and accurately identified. Unless you
run an Identd daemon on your system, you may be denied the privelege to
use some IRC servers.
For more technical information on the Ident protocol download the file RFC1413.TXT which can be located on many FTP servers by using Archie to search for the string: RFC1413.
How to use this version of Identd:
There are two ways you can start this version of Identd.
The first is to edit the file IDENT.CMD to set your username correctly.
I.E. change the line: SET USER=Os2User! to SET USER=<USERNAME>
(where <USERNAME> is the name you use to log into your
Internet Service Provider).
You can then start the program by typing IDENT.CMD at an OS/2 prompt
or by creating an icon on your desktop to run IDENT.CMD.
If you prefer not to use a CMD file to start Identd,
edit your CONFIG.SYS file to add the line SET USER=<USERNAME>
(following the same convention described in the previous paragraph)
and start Identd by typing at an OS/2 prompt: DETACH IDENTD.EXE .
