Installing Warp Internet Connection for OS/2 for the UIUC Terminal Server
(dynamic SL/IP)
This document assumes that you have already installed OS/2 Warp 3.0 and
the Internet Connection for OS/2, which is included in the BonusPak. The
script ccsoslip.cmd is based largely on the work of Matt Hucke, who was
generous enough to post it onto Usenet. I think it acts a bit more
elegantly than the original IBM version.
I. The Logon Script
1. The file "ccsoslip.cmd" resides in this archive; copy it to your
computer. If you are running the original version of Warp, you
*must* place ccsoslip.cmd in your \tcpip\bin subdirectory. If you're
running Warp Connect, it might be a good idea to put it in your
\mptn\bin subdirectory, but Connect doesn't seem to have a problem
with it in another location.
2. The file "ccsoslip.cmd" can (and should) be customized for your
particular needs. For instance, the phone number for the CCSO
Terminal Server is hardcoded to reflect the main dialup phone
number. If you require a different number, you should change it.
3. I fully realize that ccsoslip.cmd is not particularly elegant, i.e.,
there is far too much stuff hard-coded into it that doesn't need to
be. I figure that anyone who has a problem with the inelegance with
the script will alter it to his/her needs. :-)
4. The redial feature of the script does not appear to work for either
the updated version of the IAK dialer or with the dialer included with
Warp Connect. The problem is being researched, but appears to be
inherent to the dialer itself and may not be reparable. The script
still works fine when using SL/IP from the command line (instructions
for command line SL/IP are included at the end of this text).
II. Basic setup
Since you won't be using IBM Advantis, you'll need to configure SlipPM
for an alternate Internet provider, which in this case is UIUC.
1. Open the "IBM Internet Connection for OS/2" folder
2. Open the "Internet Utilities" folder
3. Open the "Dial Other Internet Providers" object
4. Click on the "Add Provider" button to add the info for UIUC
5. On the first setup page:
a. Fill out the "Provider Name" and "Nickname" boxes with
whatever name(s) you wish (these are "Name" and "Description"
in Warp Connect)
b. In the "Login Script" box (the newer SlipPM calls this
"Login Sequence), type (with no brackets)
<drive>:\<path>\ccsoslip.cmd <alias> <password>
where
<drive> and <path> refer to the subdirectory in which the
file ccsoslip.cmd resides; the path should be \tcpip\bin for
the original version of Warp (ccsoslip.cmd resides in this
archive)
<alias> is the logon name you use to logon the UIUC terminal
server
<password> is the password you use when you logon to the UIUC
terminal server
Note: make sure that you type ccsoslip.cmd in lowercase -- the
dialer seems to be picky about this
c. Click on the Next button to get to the second page
On the second setup page:
a. If there is already a number in the "MTU Size" box, leave it
be. If there is no number, type the number 1005
b. In the "Domain Nameserver" box, type the number 128.174.5.58
(NOTE: CCSO could change the main domain nameserver at any
time -- this address may have to be modified by you in the
future.)
c. In the "Your Domain Name" box, type "uiuc.edu" (w/o quotes)
d. Click on the Next button to go to the third page
On the third setup page:
a. In the News Server box, type "news.cso.uiuc.edu" (w/o quotes)
b. In the Gopher Server box, type "gopher.cso.uiuc.edu" (w/o quotes)
c. The third page can further be customized by filling in your
preferred WWW Server, as well as Mail Server information, if
you use POP Mail.
d. Click on the Next button to go to the fourth page
On the fourth setup page:
a. Choose the correct settings for your modem
b. Click on the Okay button to save the information, and name
it whatever you like
III. Connecting to UIUC via Dynamic SL/IP
1. Let's give the setup a try...
2. Click on the Dial button to begin dialing. Make sure that modem is
in the "hung up" state before dialing (DTR lowered)
3. SlipPM should automatically dial the UIUC terminal server and
establish the SLIP connection for you. The last line in the Status
box should begin with the word "ifconfig" (usually)
4. Now, let's test the connection with something fairly simple:
a. Open the Telnet object in the "Internet Utilities" folder
b. If the connection is successful, you should see the Telnetpm
window
c. Click on "Connection" in the menu
d. Click on "Open Session"
e. In the Host Name box, type in the address of the machine on which
your Internet account resides (e.g., uxa.cso.uiuc.edu)
f. Choose the correct terminal emulator and window size
g. Click on Okay to establish the connection
h. Log in as usual
i. Congratulations! You've set up SL/IP successfully!
You can now open any of the Internet objects -- you don't have to do only
one thing at a time. Open Gopher/PM, NewsReader/2, etc., etc....
-------------------
NOTE: If you find that you cannot hangup your modem after exiting
SlipPM, the following seems to work for most people:
1. Uncomment the appropriate line for your serial port in the script;
it is of the format:
'mode comX,,,,,dtr=on'
where X is the number of the serial port that your modem uses (e.g.,
1, 2, 3 or 4)
(make sure that you include the single quotes at the beginning and
end of the line!!!!)
-------------------
To install using SL/IP from the command line:
1. Customize ccsoslip.cmd to suit your needs.
2. Create a file called RESOLV in your \tcpip\etc subdirectory. The file
should contain the following two lines:
domain uiuc.edu
nameserver 128.174.5.58
Please note that the nameserver address is subject to change.
3. Create a file called SLIP.CFG in your \tcpip\bin subdirectory. The
exact contents of this file can vary. However, the following works
on my system:
interface sl0 {
attachcmd = "ccsoslip"
attachparms = "<alias> <password>"
device=COMx,
mtu=1500,
}
where <alias> (without brackets) is your login name to the terminal
server and <password> is your terminal server password. The correct
serial port number for your system should be substituted for x in
the line device=COMx,.
4. At an OS/2 command prompt, type "slip" (w/o quotes). A SLIP session
should be initiated and run the ccsoslip.cmd script, then you will be
able to use your Internet tools as usual.
