  5. THIS VIDEO DEVICE DRIVER AND THE MAINTENANCE FIXES ARE DESIGNED TO BE USED WITH
  6. THE OS/2 2.1 PRODUCT.  YOU MUST BE A CURRENT LICENSEE OF OS/2 2.1 IN ORDER TO
  7. USE THIS PRODUCT.  THIS CODE IS GOVERNED BY THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF THE
  8. OS/2 PROGRAM LICENSE AGREEMENT.

  10. This package also contains:

  12. o This README with instructions for installing the driver from a diskette.
  13. o Maintenance updates to OS/2 2.1 required for the successful operation  of
  14.   the driver.

  16. SUPPORTED FEATURES
  17. ------------------
  18.  
  19. This #9GXE video accelerator driver provides seamless support for accelerated
  20. video graphics and advanced color resolutions when used with the minimum
  21. required video memory.  It conforms to the OS/2 2.1 32-bit flat memory model
  22. and is designed to function as a 32-bit Presentation Manager* display driver
  23. under the OS/2 2.1 32-bit graphics engine.

  49. This release also includes the Number Nine GXE Workplace Shell Object,
  50. which permits the selection of refresh rates and provides on-line help.

  52. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
  53. -------------------------
  54.  
  55.     TIPS AND WARNINGS:
  56.  
  57.     Pre-installation notes:
  58.      1.  You must have OS/2 DOS Support installed in order to
  59.          install this driver.  You must also have OS/2 REXX support
  60.          installed.
  61.  
  62.      2.  The OS/2 ATTRIB command is used during installation.  If you
  63.          elected not to install the OS/2 System Utility Programs or you
  64.          have deleted the ATTRIB, command you must use Selective Install to
  65.          restore the ATTRIB command before continuing.
  66.  
  67.      3.  If you have the previous release of #9GXE drivers installed, you may
  68.          install these drivers directly over them.  You do not need to revert to
  69.          VGA.  However, to install the #9GXE Hawkeye feature set
  70.          for use in full-screen WIN-OS/2, you WILL need to return your WIN-OS/2
  71.          setup to VGA.  Full screen WINDOWS under OS/2 is supported with the 
  72.          #9GXE WINDOWS DRIVER version 4.15.  This driver can
  73.          only be installed when full screen WINDOWS under OS/2 is in VGA mode.
  74.  
  75.      4.  If you previously installed SVGA support, return to VGA resolution
  76.          using the new SETVGA procedure found at the end of this README
  77.          before you install this driver.
  78.  
  79.      5.  AFTER YOU INSTALL THESE DRIVERS, if you must re-install OS/2 2.1GA,
  80.          be sure to delete the PSS3.DSC file in your \OS2\INSTALL directory FIRST.
  81.          OS/2 2.1GA installation will not complete if this file is present.

  84. INSTALLATION FROM DISKETTE
  85. --------------------------
  86.

  88. IMPORTANT NOTE FOR BBS USERS:
  89. If you have downloaded this driver from the #9 BBS and are attempting to
  90. install it from floppy disk, the volume label of the floppy MUST be changed
  91. to "S3 DRVS" before attempting installation.
  92. ***************************************************************************

  94. This video accelerator driver is compatible with OS/2 2.1.  Do not install it
  95. on previous versions of OS/2.
  96.  
  97. To install this S3 video accelerator driver from diskette:
  98.  
  99.     1.  Place this diskette into drive A (or any other diskette drive).
  100.  
  101.     2.  Open an OS/2 full-screen or OS/2 window session.
  102.  
  103.     3.  At the OS/2 command prompt, type the following command:
  104.  
  105.     A:GXEINST A: C:
  106.  
  107.          where:  A: is the diskette drive
  108.              C: is the drive where OS/2 2.1 is installed
  109.  
  110.     This command will copy all necessary files to the OS/2 drive.
  111.     If you are prompted to replace the files DISPLAY.DLL and
  112.     PMVIOP.DLL, answer "NO". These files should NOT be overwritten.
  113.  
  114.     4.  Remove the diskette from the diskette drive, perform a shutdown, and
  115.     then restart the system.
  116.  
  117.     5.  Open the "OS/2 System" folder.
  118.  
  119.     6.  Open the "System Setup" folder.
  120.  
  121.  
  122.     7.  Open the "Display Driver Install" (DSPINSTL) object.
  123.  
  124.     When the Display Driver Install window appears, "S3" should be the
  125.     default choice.  Select "OK".
  126.  
  127.     When the Monitor Configuration/Selection Utility window appears,
  128.     the "Install Using Defaults for Monitor Type" option is preselected.
  129.     ACCEPT THIS OPTION.  (The #9GXE does not use a Display Adapter
  130.     Utility Program.)
  131.  
  132.      8. When the source directory pop-up window appears, insert the #9GXE
  133.     32-bit OS/2 Display Driver diskette and select Install.
  134.  
  135.     DSPINSTL determines the hardware configuration by creating the
  136.     SVGADATA.PMI file on the drive where the OS2 directory is located.
  137.  
  138.      9.  When the installation is complete, do the following:
  139.      a.  Open "OS/2 System".
  140.      b.  Open "System Setup".
  141.      c.  Open the "System" object.  The Screen page of the Settings
  142.          notebook lists all the supported resolutions for your
  143.          configuration.
  144.      d.  Select a resolution; then, close the notebook.
  145.  
  146.     10.  Perform a shutdown; then, restart the system.
  147.  
  148. Note that during the installation of this driver a DISPLAY.LOG file is
  149. created in the OS2\INSTALL directory.  This file identifies the OS/2 2.1 system
  150. files that were updated and indicates whether the installation was successful.
  151. The contents of this file might be useful if you need to report an
  152. installation problem to Number Nine.
  153.  
  154. INSTALLING THE NUMBER NINE GXE SOFTWARE
  155. ------------------------------------
  156.  
  157. This driver set includes an OS/2 utility to configure the
  158. refresh rate of your #9GXE under OS/2.  To install this
  159. utility, insert #9GXE Display Driver Disk 2 in a diskette
  160. drive and type:
  161.  
  162.     A:OBJINST A: C:
  163.  
  164. where "A:" is your diskette drive and "C:" is the drive on which
  165. OS/2 is installed.  The Number Nine GXE object will appear in your
  166. System Setup folder.
  167.  
  168. FUNCTIONAL RESTRICTIONS
  169. -----------------------
  170.  
  171.      o  To avoid a General Protection fault while loading Ventura
  172.         Publisher** for Windows be sure it is in one of the 256 color
  173.         resolutions.
  174.  
  175.      o  WordPerfect** 5.1 and 5.2 for Windows may produce a general protection
  176.         fault when the "Print Preview" option is selected while using
  177.         800x600x64K.
  178.  
  179.      o  Users of the software motion video feature of MMPM/2 should
  180.         expect satisfactory results in 256-color modes.  However, in
  181.         64K-color modes, users of the feature will experience unusual
  182.         results.  An OS/2 2.1 pervasive fix package will be available
  183.         electronically.
  184.  
  185.         In addition, the software motion video feature will take
  186.         advantage of a 1MB aperture on video adapters and systems where it
  187.         is available to improve the performance of video playback in
  188.         64K-color modes.  For those systems with nonstandard locations,
  189.         the actual physical address of the aperture must be provided in
  190.         the following CONFIG.SYS statement:
  191.  
  192.            SET VIDEO_APERTURE=xxxh
  193.  
  194.         where "xxx" is a hexadecimal value in units of 1MB, representing
  195.         the actual physical address to map to the aperture.
  196.       
  197.       o You may install the #9 GXE Windows driver (diskette ver. 4.15) in a
  198.         full-screen WIN-OS/2 session.  The file WIN.INI should be edited to
  199.         remove HAWKEYE.EXE from the LOAD= line.  Hawkeye may be launched once 
  200.         WIN-OS/2 has been completely started, but NOT from the WIN.INI file.
  201.  
  202. NEW SETVGA PROCEDURE
  203. --------------------
  204.  
  205. Use the following procedure instead of the SETVGA command to return to
  206. VGA mode.
  207.  
  208.     NOTE:  If your display is out of sync, start OS/2 using the OS/2
  209.            Installation Diskette, insert Diskette 1 when prompted, then
  210.            press Esc to access a command prompt.  Follow the instructions
  211.            below to reset your display mode.
  212.  
  213. o  If you installed OS/2 from diskettes:
  214.  
  215.      1.  Be sure RSPDSPI.EXE is in the \OS2\INSTALL directory.  If it is, go
  216.      to step 2.  If it is not, insert Installation Diskette 8 and unpack
  217.      RSPDSPI.EXE with the following command:
  218.  
  219.      C:\OS2\UNPACK A:\INSTAID C: /N:RSPDSPI.EXE
  220.  
  221.          where:  A: is the drive containing Installation Diskette 8
  222.              C: is the drive where OS/2 2.1 is installed
  223.  
  224.      2.  Type C:; then press Enter
  225.      3.  Type CD C:\OS2\INSTALL; then press Enter
  226.      4.  Type RSPDSPI /PK:VGA /SK:NONE /S:A:\ /T:C:; then press Enter
  227.  
  228.          /T:C: where C: is the drive where OS/2 2.1 is installed
  229.          /S:A: where A: is the diskette drive you use to install
  230.            OS/2
  231.  
  232. o  If you installed OS/2 from CD-ROM or a LAN:
  233.  
  234.      1.  Be sure RSPDSPI.EXE is in the \OS2\INSTALL directory.  If it is, go
  235.      to step 2.  If it is not, unpack RSPDSPI.EXE with the following
  236.      command:
  237.  
  238.      C:\OS2\UNPACK E:\DISK_8\INSTAID C: /N:RSPDSPI.EXE
  239.  
  240.          where:  C: is the drive where OS/2 2.1 is installed
  241.              E: is the CD-ROM or LAN drive
  242.  
  243.      2.  Type C:; then press Enter
  244.      3.  Type CD C:\OS2\INSTALL; then press Enter
  245.      4.  Type RSPDSPI /PK:VGA /SK:NONE /S:E:\OS2SE21\ /T:C:; then press Enter
  246.  
  247.          /T:C: where C: is the drive where OS/2 2.1 is installed
  248.          /S:E: where E: is the CD-ROM or LAN drive
