ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3. 2.0 Installing the ATI 3D RAGE OS/2 Drivers ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Installing the ATI 3D RAGE OS/2 Drivers
Warning: OS/2 requires that the 640x480 resolution be set for the IBM default,
60Hz vertical refresh rate. You must configure the card for all resolutions
that your monitor can support in order to have them work correctly under OS/2
Only those resolutions you have configured will display correctly. Use the
INSTALL program from the ATI 3D RAGE disk #1 or CD-ROM to configure your
monitor type BEFORE installing the OS/2 driver.
1. Close ALL running DOS and Windows applications. Check the Minimized Window
viewer to see if you have any WIN-OS/2 or DOS sessions iconized. Close them
all as the SETUP may not work if a DOS or WIN-OS/2 session is running.
2. Open a OS/2 Command Prompt window session.
3. Insert the ATI 3D RAGE disk #1 or CD-ROM in the appropriate drive. Change
directories to that drive and type: OS2INST <enter>.
4. Select Driver Installation from the Main Menu.
5. Select IBM OS/2 from the list of applications.
6. Select INSTALL OS/2 Drivers, and follow the instructions on the screen.
7. Once INSTALL has copied the drivers to the Hard Disk, exit the INSTALL,
close the OS/2 Command prompt session and shutdown the system.
8. When the system has booted, run DSPINSTL from within an OS/2 Window.
9. When the Display Driver Install panel appears, select Primary Display and
click OK to bring up a list of choices. Select ' ATI ATI 3D RAGE (Enhanced
vX.xx)' from the list and click OK.
10. When the source directory panel appears, select 'Change' and enter: <boot
drive>:\MACH_OS2 (where <boot drive> is your boot drive letter.) Click
'Set' and then 'Install'. After the files are copied, exit the OS/2 window
or full screen session. Shut down and restart your system.
11. The PM driver will first come up in 640x480, 256 colors mode. Use the
following steps to change the screen resolutions or number of colors:
a) Open 'OS/2 System' folder.
b) Open 'System Setup' folder.
c) Open 'System' object.
b) Select the 'Screen' tab.
e) Select the desired resolution and number of colors from the list.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4.2. 3.2 Manually Uninstalling the ATI 3D RAGE OS/2 Drivers ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Manually Uninstalling the ATI 3D RAGE OS/2 Drivers
To manually UNINSTALL the drivers:
1. Switch OS/2 to the VGA driver by either:
o Running Selective Install from the OS/2 System Folder to reconfigure
OS/2 for VGA
o Running SETVGA from an OS/2 full screen session
o Switching to VGA display using the <Alt><F1> sequence and option 'V'
(requires OS/2 Warp)
2. Remove these lines from the CONFIG.SYS file:
DEVICE=C:\OS2\ATI0.SYS
DEVICE=C:\OS2\ATIM64.SYS
DEVICE=C:OS2\VAD64.SYS
3. Remove these files from the OS/2 drive:
\OS2\ATIO.SYS
\OS2\ATIM64.SYS
\OS2\VAD64.SYS
\OS2\DLL\M6432.DLL
\OS2\INSTALL\M6432.DSC
4. Remove these files from the Windows directory:
For OS/2 for Windows or Warp (without Windows included):
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\FMACX.DRV
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SMACX.DRV
For OS/2 or Warp FullPack:
\OS2\MDOS\WINOS2\SYSTEM\FMACX.DRV
\OS2\MDOS\WINOS2\SYSTEM\SMACX.DRV
5. Remove the [Macx] section from the WINDOWS or WINOS2 SYSTEM.INI file.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5. 4.0 Known Problems ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Known Problems
Using small fonts under WIN-OS/2
Some applications, such as WinBench 95, requires mall fonts in order to
function properly under Win-OS/2 full screen and seamless. To install the ATI
3D RAGE drivers using small fonts instead of the default large fonts, rename
M6432.DSP to M6432L.DSP, and then rename M6432S.DSP to M6432.DSP in directory
mach_os2. Run DSPINSTL after that and the small fonts will be installed.
WIN-OS/2 FULL SCREEN
Please do not start a full screen WIN-OS/2 session from the OS/2 command line
or the DOS command line, either full screen or windowed. You MUST start the
full screen WIN-OS/2 session by launcing it using the WIN-OS/2 FULL SCREEN
session icon from the Command Prompt folder. If you still experience problems,
make sure that "VIDEO_SWITCH_NOTIFICATION" is turned on for the session.
OS/2 2.11
Versions of OS/2 2.11 which do not have the IBM Service Fix Pack extensions
installed may not function correctly with some cards. With some versions the
Full-Screen OS/2 mode may appear out of sync., DOS boxes may not function or
OS/2 2.11 may not boot up.
1 MB CARD
When installing the ATI OS/2 Warp driver on a system configured with a 1MB ATI
3D RAGE graphics controller, the following error message is displayed "The
default driver does not support the selected display adapter". To complete the
installation, ignore this message. The driver will be installed successfully.
COM 4 CONFLICT
Attempting to execute the ATI 3D RAGE INSTALL program with a Com 4 device
installed will cause the system to hang. Remove any device that uses the base
I/O 2E8, before running INSTALL.
REMOVING/ADDING MEMORY
When removing memory or adding memory to a ATI 3D RAGE adapter it is recomended
that you:
1. Uninstall the ATI 3D RAGE driver following "Uninstalling the ATI 3D RAGE
OS/2 Drivers."
2. Install the driver again following "Installing the ATI 3D RAGE OS/2
drivers."
SPECIAL DOS MODES
Some special DOS modes may not display correctly with some cards, for example,
40 column text in a DOS session.
TASK SWITCHING DOS GRAPHICS
Task switching between DOS graphics and the Presentation Manager, will result
in the DOS session, becoming distorted. The distorted DOS display may appear
with a ghosted image of the Presentation Manager. The DOS screen may be black
or have random graphics. This problem can be seen with DOS games using VESA
modes and other graphics based applications. The only workaround is to
refreshing the DOS session screen within the application itself.
CHESS
The white players are transparent boxes. If you run Chess OS/2 Computer vs
Computer, the white team chess pieces are not distinguishable.
CHANGING REFRESH RATES
When changing refresh rates of 640x480 resolution, IBM OS/2 must use 60 Hz VGA
frequency. This is a limitation of OS/2 and only applies to the 640x480
resolution. Use the OS2INST program on the ATI 3D RAGE disk #1 or CD-ROM to
set this refresh rate if required. Improperly configuring the 640x480
resolution, can result in the system hanging to a scrambled screen on boot.
MINIMIZED FULL-SCREEN WINDOWS REBOOT
If full-screen windows is minimized and the system is rebooted without closing
the Full Screen Windows session or the system crashes, when the system is
restarted, Windows components will improperly appear on the OS/2 desktop. To
work around this add the following line to your CONFIG.SYS file:
SET RESTARTOBJECTS=STARTUPFOLDERSONLY
This will prevent the Windows session from automatically coming up when the
system is restarted.
SEAMLESS WINDOWS
1. If an application selects any font greater than 48 points it will cause an
"Application Error" and consequently the application windows under that
seamless session will be terminated.
2. PowerPoint will terminate with an "Application Error" under the current
version of the drivers.
Micrographics Designer
1. Micrographics Designer for OS/2 in 24 bits per pixel mode may not load, or
may cause corrupted display.
Uninstalling ATI ATI 3D RAGE drivers
1. Uninstalling the ATI driver may leave a reference to \OS2\VAD64.SYS in your
CONFIG.SYS file. If so you must manually edit the CONFIG.SYS file to remove
this reference to complete the uninstall or DOS sessions may become
corrupted. This is a known problem with the uninstall and can be corrected
by an IBM field service update.
VIDEO PLAYBACK
1. Blank or Garbled video playback, particularly with the UltiMotion clips.
2. Playing video clips in 24bpp may result in a black video display. With some
configurations this feature may not run, or may trap.
3. Playing video clips and switching to WIN-OS/2 full screen while the video
clip is playing may cause the system to lock up.
4. 64K Color modes: UltiMotion clips will come up as mostly blue when running
800x600, 65K color or 1024x768, 65K color modes. This is a technical
problem with the 2.1 release of OS/2 UltiMedia; it is unable to use more
than 1MB of video memory. The current 2.11 release of OS/2 UltiMotion, does
not experience this problem.
5. Overlapping a Video playback window with another window may result in the
video bleeding through the overlapping window.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 6. 5.0 Upgrading your ATI 3D RAGE ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Upgrading your ATI 3D RAGE
Warning: Before upgrading to your ATI 3D RAGE (even from another ATI 3D RAGE
card) you must follow the uninstall procedure resetting your system to VGA
before reinstalling the new ATI 3D RAGE drivers to ensure driver compatibility.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 7. 6.0 Reporting Problems ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Reporting Problems
If you experience any difficulties, open the file REPORT.TXT (located on disk
or CD-ROM) and complete the Problem Report form.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The ATI 3D RAGE disk #1 is part of the distribution diskettes that were
